Chapter 6: The Moon Heir

866 Words
The palace gardens fell silent. Rain dripped from shattered branches. The surviving Shadow Hunters stared at the enormous silver wolf standing before them. Fear flashed across their faces. "The Silver Prince," one whispered. Darius bared his teeth. A low growl rumbled from his chest. The attackers immediately stepped backward. For the first time that night, they looked uncertain. The masked leader recovered quickly. "Kill him." The Shadow Hunters charged. Darius launched forward. The ground trembled beneath his paws. He crashed into the first attacker, sending him flying across the garden. Another swung a dark blade. Darius dodged and knocked him aside with terrifying force. Within moments, several hunters lay defeated. Yet more continued advancing. The masked leader raised his hand. Dark energy spiraled around him. A blast of black fire shot toward Darius. Before it could strike, a wall of silver light appeared. The attack shattered harmlessly against it. Everyone turned. Rayna stood beside her brother. Her hands glowed faintly. The silver symbols had returned. Not as powerful as before. But unmistakably present. Even Rayna looked surprised. "I did that?" Darius shifted into human form. His golden eyes widened. "The power is responding to you." "I don't even know what it is!" "You don't need to." Another blast of dark energy raced toward them. This time Rayna instinctively raised her hand. The silver light answered immediately. The attack dissolved into sparks. The Shadow Hunters hesitated. Their advantage was disappearing. The masked leader snarled. "You were supposed to remain hidden." Rayna frowned. "What does that mean?" The leader's expression changed. Realizing he had said too much. Before he could answer, a thunderous roar echoed through the sky. Everyone looked up. Several giant wolves emerged from the forest. Moonclaw warriors. At their head stood Alpha King Lucian Antony. The ruler of Moonclaw had arrived. The Shadow Hunters knew the battle was lost. The masked leader pointed toward Rayna. "This isn't over." Dark smoke exploded around the attackers. When it cleared, they were gone. The gardens finally became quiet. King Theodore and Queen Isabella rushed outside moments later. Relief flooded their faces when they saw Rayna unharmed. The relief lasted only seconds. Then they noticed the werewolves. Tension filled the air. Human guards raised their weapons. Moonclaw warriors lowered their heads and prepared to fight. One wrong move could start a war. Lucian stepped forward first. "We are not your enemies." King Theodore studied him carefully. "The Alpha King." Lucian nodded. "The Human King." For several uncomfortable moments, neither ruler spoke. Then Lucian's eyes shifted toward Rayna. His expression softened. "It has happened." Rayna stepped forward. "What has happened?" Lucian looked at her. Not as a princess. Not as a human. But as something far older. "The Moon Heir has awakened." Hours later, everyone gathered inside the palace council chamber. Rain continued falling outside. Inside, silence ruled the room. Rayna sat beside Adrian and Darius. Across from them sat both kings and queens. Lucian finally spoke. "Thousands of years ago, before the Great War, there existed a guardian known as the Moon Heir." He placed an ancient silver book upon the table. "The Moon Heir was chosen by moon magic itself." Rayna swallowed. "Chosen to do what?" "Maintain balance." Lucian opened the book. Ancient drawings covered its pages. One image showed a young woman surrounded by silver light. The image looked remarkably similar to Rayna. "The Moon Heir possessed extraordinary abilities." "Healing." "Protection." "The power to oppose darkness." Darius remained silent. He already knew where this was going. Lucian turned another page. The final illustration showed a dark figure surrounded by shadows. The Dark Sorcerer. "When the last Moon Heir defeated the Dark Sorcerer, both vanished." The room grew colder. "But evil rarely dies forever." King Theodore leaned forward. "And now?" Lucian's gaze settled on Rayna. "Now the darkness has returned." Everyone understood immediately. The Dark Sorcerer had not attacked the palace because Rayna was a princess. He attacked because she was the Moon Heir. Later that night, Rayna stood alone on a palace balcony. The storm had finally passed. Moonlight illuminated the city below. The weight of everything pressed heavily upon her. Princess. Prophecy. Moon Heir. Savior. None of it felt real. Footsteps approached. She already knew who it was. Darius joined her at the railing. Neither spoke at first. The silence felt comfortable. Not awkward. Just peaceful. Finally Rayna sighed. "My life was much simpler a week ago." Darius laughed softly. "Mine too." She looked at him. "Were you afraid tonight?" He considered the question. "Yes." Rayna blinked. The answer surprised her. "Really?" Darius nodded. "I wasn't afraid of the Shadow Hunters." "Then what were you afraid of?" His golden eyes met hers. For a moment, he seemed unsure whether to answer. Then he spoke quietly. "I was afraid I'd arrive too late." The world seemed to stop. Rayna felt her heart skip. Neither looked away. Neither noticed how close they had moved. A warm breeze passed between them. And somewhere far away, hidden within a ruined fortress, the Dark Sorcerer watched through a pool of shadows. His crimson eyes glowed. "The Moon Heir..." He smiled slowly. At last. The game had truly begun. To be continued...
