Chapter 16: The Forgotten Prison

795 Words
The alarms rang throughout Aurelion. Citizens filled the streets. Guards rushed toward the palace. Above them, the silver beam from the Heart of Luna still pierced the night sky. Rayna and Darius ran through the palace corridors. Behind them followed Adrian, King Theodore, Queen Isabella, and several Moonclaw warriors. Nobody spoke. The urgency was obvious. Something ancient had awakened. And everyone could feel it. They reached the vault deep beneath the palace. The massive doors stood open. Silver energy flowed through the chamber like a river of light. The Heart of Luna floated high above its pedestal. Ancient runes covered every wall. The same warning appeared repeatedly. "The Prison Stirs." "The Prison Stirs." "The Prison Stirs." Rayna stepped closer. The symbols immediately reacted. The silver light around her intensified. "What prison?" Adrian asked. "I don't know," Rayna admitted. A deep voice answered from the shadows. "I do." Everyone turned. Alpha King Lucian emerged from a hidden passage. Beside him walked Elder Arkan. The old historian looked unusually pale. Which worried Darius immediately. "You know what this means?" Darius asked. Arkan nodded slowly. "There are stories older than Moonclaw." He approached the glowing walls. "Stories so ancient that most people believe they are myths." The old wolf touched one of the runes. The symbol changed. A map appeared across the chamber floor. Not a map of kingdoms. A map of the world itself. At its center burned a single silver point. Aurelion. "The First Guardians didn't create the Heart of Luna to destroy darkness." The old historian's voice trembled. "They created it to contain something." Silence filled the chamber. Then Rayna asked the question everyone feared. "What?" The runes shifted again. A vision appeared. A world consumed by shadows. Cities in ruins. Mountains broken. Oceans boiling beneath black storms. The image was horrifying. At the center stood a colossal figure made entirely of darkness. Its form constantly changed. Human. Monster. Shadow. Storm. It seemed to be all of them at once. Rayna felt a chill run through her body. "What is that?" Arkan lowered his head. "The Void King." The name echoed through the chamber. Ancient. Forgotten. Dangerous. "The first enemy." "The Dark Sorcerer wasn't trying to conquer the world." Lucian's expression darkened. "He was trying to reach the prison." Everyone froze. The revelation changed everything. Every battle. Every attack. Every scheme. The Dark Sorcerer had been searching for something buried beneath Aurelion. Something sealed away by the First Guardians. "The prison weakens every century," Arkan explained. "The Heart of Luna strengthens the seal." Rayna looked toward the floating crystal. "And now?" The old historian closed his eyes. "The seal is failing." Suddenly, the Heart of Luna pulsed. Once. Twice. Three times. The entire palace shook violently. Cracks appeared across the floor. Far below them, something roared. The sound wasn't human. It wasn't animal. It sounded like an earthquake learning how to scream. Everyone stepped back. Even Lucian looked alarmed. The roar came again. Closer. Stronger. Hungry. Far away, inside his fortress, the Dark Sorcerer stood before a balcony overlooking a sea of darkness. The silver beam from Aurelion was visible even from there. For centuries, he had prepared for this moment. For centuries, he had feared it. His crimson eyes reflected the distant light. "They know now." A shadow servant knelt beside him. "My lord, should we continue our plans?" The Sorcerer remained silent. Then he spoke words nobody expected. "No." The servant looked confused. "My lord?" The Dark Sorcerer turned toward the horizon. "The war is over." His expression was grave. Almost sorrowful. "Because if the Void King awakens..." Even he could not finish the sentence. Back beneath the palace, the silver runes suddenly surged across the walls. A final message appeared. One left by Selene and Orion themselves. Rayna recognized their symbols immediately. The ancient message glowed brightly. "To the future guardians..." "If you read these words, the seal has begun to fail." The chamber became completely silent. "Only united hearts may restore what is breaking." The message continued. "Travel to the Temple of the First Moon." "There, the truth awaits." A new map appeared. This one showed a distant island far beyond any known kingdom. An island missing from every modern chart. The location of the ancient temple. The location of answers. And perhaps... The location of their only hope. As the vision faded, Rayna looked toward Darius. Darius looked toward her. Neither needed to speak. The same thought existed in both their minds. Another journey awaited. A far more dangerous one. The fate of two kingdoms was no longer at stake. Now the fate of the entire world rested upon the guardians. And beneath Aurelion, deep within the darkness below the prison, something ancient slowly opened its eyes. To be continued...
