Chapter 11: Shadows Between Kingdoms

916 Words
The journey home should have been a celebration. The Heart of Luna had been secured. The Dark Sorcerer had been driven away. And for the first time in centuries, the prophecy was no longer just a legend. Yet as the expedition traveled back through the Frostpeak Mountains, an uneasy feeling lingered. Something wasn't right. Rayna felt it. Darius felt it. Even the warriors seemed unusually alert. It was as if the world itself was holding its breath. Three days into their journey, they reached the border between Moonclaw and Aurelion. Messengers were already waiting. Their expressions immediately told Darius that something had happened. Bad news. The messenger bowed quickly. "Your Highness, there has been trouble." Darius frowned. "What kind of trouble?" The man hesitated. Then spoke the words no one wanted to hear. "Human villages near the border were attacked." Rayna's heart sank. "By whom?" The messenger looked uncomfortable. "Witnesses claim they saw werewolves." Silence fell over the group. Darius's jaw tightened. "It wasn't us." "I know that," Rayna said immediately. But the problem wasn't whether she believed him. The problem was whether everyone else would. When they finally returned to Aurelion, the atmosphere had changed. The city was restless. People whispered as the Moonclaw warriors passed. Some stared openly. Others looked afraid. Rumors spread faster than truth. And rumors were dangerous. King Theodore welcomed his daughter home warmly. But even he seemed troubled. That evening, an emergency council meeting was called. Representatives from both kingdoms filled the chamber. The discussions quickly became heated. "My people were killed!" one noble shouted. "Werewolves were seen near the attacks!" General Kael Blackthorn rose from his seat. "And several Moonclaw patrols disappeared during the same nights." The room erupted into arguments. Humans blamed werewolves. Werewolves blamed humans. The fragile peace that had begun to form was already cracking. Rayna exchanged a worried glance with Darius. This was exactly what the Dark Sorcerer would want. Later that night, Rayna couldn't sleep. She wandered onto a quiet balcony overlooking the city. The moon hung low in the sky. Normally, its light brought comfort. Tonight, it only deepened her worries. "Couldn't sleep either?" She turned. Darius. A smile appeared despite everything. "No." He joined her at the railing. For a while, neither spoke. The city lights twinkled below. A cool breeze drifted between them. Finally, Darius sighed. "The attacks were planned." Rayna nodded. "The Dark Sorcerer." "He wants us fighting each other." "And people are falling for it." The thought made her angry. After everything they had discovered beneath the mountain, people were still choosing fear over trust. Darius looked toward the horizon. "My father is under pressure from his council." Rayna frowned. "What kind of pressure?" "They want the borders closed." Her stomach dropped. If that happened, the alliance between their kingdoms might collapse before it truly began. "What about you?" Darius asked softly. "What about me?" "Your council." Rayna laughed bitterly. "Half of them already think I've lost my mind." Darius chuckled. "I highly doubt that." "You should hear them." For the first time all day, they both smiled. The moment felt precious. Rare. A brief escape from the growing storm around them. Days passed. The situation only worsened. More attacks occurred along the border. Each side accused the other. Trust continued to erode. Then came the worst news. A Moonclaw patrol discovered evidence linking the attacks to Aurelion soldiers. At almost the exact same time, Aurelion scouts found evidence pointing to Moonclaw warriors. It made no sense. Both couldn't be true. Unless... "They're being framed," Adrian said during a strategy meeting. Everyone looked at him. The young prince pointed at the reports spread across the table. "Someone is planting evidence." The room fell silent. Because deep down, everyone knew he was right. The attacks were too perfect. Too convenient. The Dark Sorcerer wasn't just creating chaos. He was manipulating both kingdoms. And it was working. That evening, Rayna walked through the palace gardens alone. Her thoughts raced. Every solution seemed impossible. Every path led toward conflict. Suddenly, the moon pendant around her neck began glowing. She stopped. The light grew brighter. Silver symbols appeared in the air. The same symbols connected to the Heart of Luna. A vision formed before her eyes. A ruined tower. Dark clouds. A black banner marked with a crimson eye. Then a face appeared. The masked leader of the Shadow Hunters. He was giving orders to soldiers wearing stolen Moonclaw armor. The vision shifted again. The same man handed stolen Aurelion weapons to another group. Then everything vanished. Rayna gasped. Now she understood. The attacks weren't random. The Shadow Hunters were disguising themselves as both sides. Creating hatred. Creating war. Exactly as the Dark Sorcerer intended. Footsteps sounded behind her. Darius appeared. He immediately noticed her expression. "What happened?" Rayna looked up. Excitement and urgency filled her voice. "I know who's behind the attacks." Darius's eyes widened. "You saw something?" She nodded. "The Shadow Hunters." Hope flickered between them. At last, they had a lead. At last, they had a chance to stop the war before it began. But neither noticed the shadow watching from beyond the garden wall. A raven with glowing crimson eyes sat silently in a tree. The Dark Sorcerer's spy. The bird spread its wings and vanished into the night. Its master would learn everything. And he was already preparing his next move. A move that would place Rayna and Darius in greater danger than ever before. To be continued...
