The morning’s hike had just gathered speed and optimism when their route crashed through a clearing that wrecked their hopes of stealth. Two cameras perched above them on birch trees, bound with metal clamps to the trunks, glass eyes glinting down on them with menace. Calvin withdrew beside Martin deeper into the foliage cover. “I doubt those are the first of their cameras. They’re probably tracking us already.” Calvin’s forehead felt dry and itchy.
