CHAPTER THIRTY-FOUR July 9, 2010 Morning Calvin woke to a stiff spine and darkness as high heels rang across a concrete floor. The footsteps strutted like a prizefighter assuming victory before the first punch. Light burst above him, and Natalie’s face punctured his haze of perception. “Sit up and don’t try anything,” she ordered. He rose. Beneath him lay a cot on the floor of a bare cell. He heard hushed sounds of other people murmuring in the room’s dark pockets but couldn’t see them clearly. He now wore a black t-shirt and black slacks.
