The Night They Killed Luna
Chapter 1: The Night They Killed Luna
The night Luna Vayra died, the blood moon bled across the sky above the frozen northern peaks of the Royal Keep.
Heavy storm clouds swallowed the stars while a mountain gale roared through the granite archways, carrying the scent of cold iron and dark magic. Luna wrapped her velvet shawl tighter around her shoulders as she looked out over the sleeping kingdom.
Tomorrow at noon, Prince Lucien would place the crown of the High Realm upon her head. The entire kingdom would gather in the courtyard to celebrate their union—or so she believed.
She touched the delicate silver necklace resting against her collarbone. Lucien had fastened it around her neck on her eighteenth birthday.
For the woman who will one day rule beside me.
Those words had burned quietly within her heart for seven years. She had been foolish enough to trust them.
“Still awake, sister?”
Luna turned to see her younger sister, Elara, standing in the balcony doorway in a simple sea-foam blue gown.
“I couldn't sleep,” Luna admitted. “Tomorrow I'll be married, Elara. An entire kingdom will expect me to behave like a true queen. I just want to make Father proud and be worthy of Lucien.”
Elara walked toward her, her silk slippers silent against the flagstones. “You'll be a wonderful queen.”
There was an unnatural flatness in Elara's voice that made Luna’s chest tighten.
“What is it, Elara? You’ve been distant all week.” Luna reached out, but Elara pulled her hands away.
“Do you really love Lucien?” Elara asked, her eyes fixed on Luna with sudden intensity. “With everything you have?”
“Of course,” Luna replied without hesitation.
Before Elara could speak, heavy leather boots thundered down the stone corridor. A full squad of royal guards burst onto the balcony with drawn swords. The captain stopped directly in front of her.
“Princess Luna Vayra, you are under arrest for high treason.”
Luna’s breath caught in her throat. “On whose authority?”
The guards swarmed around her. As Luna looked frantically for answers, Elara slowly backed into the shadows with a small smile.
The heavy oak doors groaned open, and Prince Lucien stepped through. Luna’s heart lifted with immediate relief.
“Lucien! Thank goodness,” she gasped. “Tell them to stop this!”
He didn't move toward her. As he stepped past the guards, he stopped beside Elara and laced his fingers through hers.
Luna stared at their joined hands, her mind refusing to comprehend the sight.
“No… tell me this isn't what it looks like.”
“It is,” Lucien said, his gray eyes devoid of warmth. “I'm marrying Elara.”
Seven years of memories collapsed inside Luna at once—the secret meetings in the gardens, every promise under the stars.
I love you, Luna. One day, you'll be my queen.
“Why?” she whispered, tears burning her cheeks.
“Because you were never meant to be queen,” Lucien replied.
Luna turned her gaze to her sister. “Elara… how could you? You're my sister!”
“You had everything, Luna!” Elara snapped, her voice trembling with rage. “Father's love! The throne! Lucien’s devotion! I spent my life standing in your shadow!”
“I would have shared everything with you!” Luna sobbed. “I loved you!”
Lucien placed a hand on Elara's shoulder. “Enough. Guards, take her down.”
Two guards seized Luna’s arms, pinning them behind her back.
“Lucien, please!” she begged, fighting their grip. “You loved me!”
A brief shadow of regret crossed his face before vanishing into ruthless ambition.
“I loved the position you gave me,” he said quietly. “Nothing more.”
The fight drained out of Luna completely. A hollow calm settled over her heart as the guards dragged her backward across the stone. She looked back one last time at the couple beneath the torchlight.
“How long?” she whispered.
Elara looked away, and Luna understood: long enough.
They threw her into the central courtyard beneath a torrential downpour. Her white wedding gown turned black in the mud. The massive iron gates slammed shut behind her, locking her out forever.
Lucien appeared at the top of the stairs, flanked by four executioners. Luna pushed herself up from the wet earth. As she looked up at him through the rain, she realized he was terrified.
“Why are you afraid of me, Lucien?” she demanded over the storm. “What did I ever do?”
“Nothing,” he said softly, turning away.
An executioner raised a massive steel broadsword high into the night.
“Lucien?” Luna gasped, stepping back.
He turned his back on her.
The blade struck.
Pain exploded through Luna's chest. She looked down in horror as deep crimson blood spread across the wet white fabric. Her knees gave way, and she collapsed into the mud.
Above her, the blood-red moon blurred through the rain. Her final thought wasn't of vengeance, but of the boy she had loved:
Why wasn't I enough?
Then the cold swallowed her, and everything went black.
Luna woke to the steady sound of dripping water echoing through stone.
She opened her eyes to find herself surrounded by ancient basalt walls covered in moss. Massive stone pillars were carved with images of running wolves and moons. Suspended braziers filled with blue fire lit the cavern.
Pushing herself upright on the stone altar, her hand flew to her chest.
There was no wound. No blood. No pain. Where the broadsword had sundered her ribs, there was only smooth skin. Her ruined gown had been replaced by a sweeping dress of deep green silk embroidered with golden runes.
A low growl echoed through the darkness as two glowing blue eyes ignited in the shadows. A massive silver wolf stepped into the light, a glowing golden crescent moon mark burning between its ears.
Luna scrambled back against a pillar. “Are you real?”
A deep voice echoed directly within her mind: You finally woke.
Luna pressed hands to her temples. “Who said that?”
I did, the beast answered. Our souls are bound by ancient blood, child of the moon.
“Where am I?” she rasped.
The Temple of the First Moon. Ask the question that weighs upon your spirit.
Luna trembled as memories flooded back. “Am I dead?”
You were. Your ordinary life ended beneath the blood moon. But death is merely a threshold for our lineage.
“They killed me,” she whispered. “Lucien... Elara... why?”
Because they discovered the truth, and they feared what you would become once awakened.
The cavern violently shuddered as a deep rumble rolled through the earth. Enormous stone doors ground open, revealing a blinding golden light.
A woman stepped through—ethereal and beautiful, with liquid silver hair and a moonstone crown.
“Who are you?” Luna whispered.
“My name is Selene,” the woman said softly. “I am your ancestor. You were betrayed because your enemies realized the dormant god-blood within your veins.”
Luna looked down at her hands. A faint emerald glow pulsed beneath her skin. “I'm just a normal girl…”
“You were ordinary only because your true power was sealed at birth,” Selene corrected, pointing toward an altar holding a crown carved from dark petrified wood and emerald stones. “Your true inheritance awaits.”
Drawn by an irresistible pull, Luna approached the artifact. The moment her fingertips touched the dark wood, the temple erupted with blinding light. The white wolf threw back its head and let out a thunderous howl.
Golden warmth surged into Luna's arms, flooding her mind with memories: an ancient empire; vast armies kneeling beneath a silver moon; and a memory of herself as a child, while a voice whispered:
When the world turns dark, return to the moon.
Luna pulled back, gasping for air. “What was that?”
“Your true past,” Selene said grimly. “Your father sealed your bloodline to protect you, but the seal is broken.”
Another tremor shook the walls as heavy stones cracked near the entrance. The white wolf snarled toward the doorway.
They have found us, the wolf growled in her mind.
Hearing the distant clanking of heavy armor and the shouts of royal guards, Luna felt no fear. The gentle girl who had wept in the rain was dead.
Emerald magic gathered around her fingertips. She turned her eyes back to Selene.
“If I have been given another life, I am not wasting a single second of it.”
As the temple doors shattered inward, Luna reached for the emerald crown and placed it firmly upon her head.
A shockwave of silver and green light blasted outward, tearing through the ceiling and ripping the stormy clouds above into ribbons. Across the continent, the blood-red moon was washed clean, blazing with radiant silver light. In every forest, thousands of wild wolves howled in triumph.
Miles away inside his chambers, Prince Lucien bolted upright in bed, cold sweat dripping down his face as an overwhelming aura slammed into his soul. Rushing out to his balcony, he stared up at the glowing silver moon, his face draining of color:
“Luna…”
Back within the temple, Luna opened her eyes, now burning with fierce emerald fire. As the royal guards rushed through the dust with drawn swords, she looked right past them toward the distant palace.
The white wolf stepped up beside her, its teeth bared. And when they kneel before you?
Luna's voice carried the absolute weight of an awakened goddess:
“Then I'll decide whether they deserve to rise again.”
