I glanced back at Lord Regan who just shrugged. Unsure of exactly what to do I simply nodded to King Halvor and began walking towards the back staircase as it was the only way I knew to my room. King Halvor and his knights - who were almost as big as he was and similar in appearance - began to follow me.
I heard a high pitched laughter behind me and we all turned towards the grating sound.
“Using the servants stairs I see. My goodness what a sorry sight you are” Talia said with a mocking tone.
I glanced around the room and Lord Regan and his children stared at me with malice in their eyes, all too glad to see me humiliated. I blushed and looked down.
“I apologize King Halvor, but it’s the only way to my room that I know” I murmured.
King Halvor grunted and said “The servants way is probably the quickest, which is good.”
I glanced up at him and noticed he was giving an icy glare towards Talia, who had backed up slightly in fear.
I nodded and turned to continue our way to my room. Once we arrived I again wasn’t exactly sure what to do. I turned to the king, who was staring at me. I hastily turned and opened the door. I took a few steps inside and felt the king enter right behind me.
I quickly turned around as the king walked past me to survey the room. His knights remained outside. I gulped, not sure what the king was intending to do. He quickly turned his attention back to me and said “This room is not fit for a queen, but at least it is warm. Perhaps I should tell your father to get you a better room for the night.”
I lowered my gaze and replied “It’s alright King Halvor, I don’t want to cause any trouble for anyone.”
King Halvor scoffed and said “Who cares if you cause trouble for these bastards? They cause trouble for you. That’s why I’m posting my warriors outside your door tonight. Normally I wouldn’t bother, but I don’t trust your family, especially that ugly wench.”
My head shot up in surprise and my eyes met King Halvor, who was now just inches from me. I could feel my breath catch and my heart rate quicken. The way he looked at me seemed to give me nervous excitement. Like I was scared and flattered all at once.
The king continued to gaze down at me for another moment before turning and walking back towards the door to his knights.
“I want two warriors outside this door at all times. No one enters tonight and if my Queen needs anything make sure to get it for her.”
All his men bowed their heads in response. The king looked back at me once more before turning and closing the door behind him.
I sighed and turned to towards the small table and plopped down in one of the chairs. I began rubbing my temples to try and prevent the headache that was trying to form. What a day.
I slowly got up and was just about to change and wash when I heard a commotion outside my door. A high pitched squeaking followed by gruff voices.
I threw open my door to see what was going on and was met with Lady Talia’s viscous gaze.
