Chapter one: Brushstrokes of the past.
The brush glided across the wall, each stroke a silent scream Zara couldn’t release with words. Sunlight poured in through the high glass windows of the art gallery, painting the floor with golden warmth—but inside her, the cold never left. She was working on her latest piece: a large mural commissioned for a charity event. A sunrise over the Mississipi —bold oranges, melancholy blues. It should’ve felt hopeful. Instead, it felt like grief. The pay was poor and her back was strained, Zara squinted at her canvas, sweat trickling down her neck. Her studio apron was stained, her fingers smudged with paint—but none of it mattered. When she painted, she disappeared. It was the only place she could exist without pretending. Because outside of this room, the world expected her to be fine. But five years ago, the man who once made her feel seen—truly seen—walked out of her life without a word. And she’d been painting her way out of that silence ever since. 🎨 Flashback – London, Five Years Ago Rain tapped against the windowpane as Zara laughed, her curls a mess, her hands covered in charcoal. The studio was cluttered and chaotic, and she loved every inch of it. Adrian sat on the floor, shirtless, back against the wall, sketching her as if she were the most fascinating thing he’d ever seen. “Stay still,” he whispered, pencil moving. “I’m naked in front of a hunk man, Adrian. Stillness is... difficult, unreal rather. I feel like an expensive mural.” she teased, biting her lip. He smiled softly. “You’re more than art to me, Zara. You’re the only thing that feels real.” And she believed him. Until the morning she woke up, and he—and all his promises—were gone. 🌆 Present Day – Missouri Zara’s phone buzzed. A message from an unknown number.  “Your talent speaks louder than you think. I have a project for you. High-paying. Discreet. Come to the Phoenix Resort lobby, 9 AM tomorrow. — A.W.” She blinked. A.W. She stared at the initials, heart skipping a beat. Adrian Wolfe. “No,” she whispered to the empty studio. “It can’t be.” She hadn’t heard his name in years—had trained herself not to Google him. She’d spent five years burying him beneath this brushstrokes. She wouldn’t know what to do if it were him. She needed the money—her brother’s treatment bills were piling up, her freelance gigs weren’t enough, and her rent was overdue. But working for the man who shattered her? It would be like painting with broken fingers. Zara stared at the mural in front of her. The sun was rising in the scene. Brilliant. Beautiful. Inevitable. As the paint dried, she added one final detail: Two silhouettes on the water’s edge. One walking away. One watching them leave. And beneath it, in tiny, hidden script:  “He was the brush. I was the canvas. But I was the one left blank.”
