Chapter 001: The Unexpected on the Modern Battlefield
The night was as dark as ink, with thick clouds obscuring the moonlight. Only scattered flashes of fire flickered in the distance. Li Feng lay prone in the muddy trench, the whistling of bullets and the thunderous roar of explosions filling his ears. His breathing was steady and deep, his sniper rifle firmly mounted on his shoulder, the crosshairs in his scope locked onto a distant target. "Target confirmed—enemy commander, 800 meters away. Wind speed: 5 meters per second. Humidity: high," Li Feng murmured into his communicator, his voice as calm as if he were discussing the weather. "Copy that. Awaiting orders," the commander's voice came through the earpiece, tinged with a hint of tension. Li Feng didn't respond. His entire focus was on the target. As a special forces sniper, he was long accustomed to moments where life and death hung in the balance. His finger rested lightly on the trigger, waiting for the perfect moment to strike. Suddenly, a violent explosion erupted in the distance, shaking the ground. Li Feng’s vision wavered slightly. He frowned, quickly adjusting his position and re-locking onto the target. "Li Feng, situation has changed! Enemy reinforcements are approaching. We need to retreat immediately!" The commander’s voice came through urgently. Li Feng didn't hesitate. He knew that in this situation, retreat was the only option. Swiftly stowing his sniper rifle, he slung his gear over his back and moved quickly along the trench. His movements were agile and silent, like a panther gliding through the darkness. But just as he was about to reach the extraction point, a blinding light suddenly descended from the sky, illuminating the entire battlefield. Instinctively, Li Feng looked up, only to see a massive pillar of light hurtling straight toward him. "What the hell is that?!" His heart pounded, but before he could react, the light engulfed him completely. The next moment, an unbearable pain tore through his body, making it nearly impossible to breathe. His vision blurred, his ears filled with an overwhelming buzzing sound. He struggled, but his body refused to obey, as if an invisible force was dragging him into an abyss of darkness. He had no idea how much time had passed when his consciousness gradually returned. Slowly opening his eyes, he found himself lying on unfamiliar ground. The sky was a brilliant blue, the sun shining brightly, and around him stretched a dense forest filled with the crisp songs of birds. "Where am I?" Li Feng sat up, scanning his surroundings, his heart full of confusion. He clearly remembered being on the battlefield—so how had he suddenly ended up in a place like this? Checking his gear, he found that aside from his sniper rifle and a few personal items, everything else was gone. What disturbed him even more was that his communicator had completely lost signal, as if he had been completely cut off from the outside world. "Could I have been captured?" Li Feng frowned but quickly dismissed the thought. The surroundings looked nothing like a modern battlefield—it felt more like a primeval forest. Standing up, he brushed the dirt off his uniform and decided to find higher ground to assess his surroundings. As a special forces soldier, he knew that in an unfamiliar environment, staying calm and vigilant was key to survival. Following a small stream upstream, he moved lightly and cautiously, his eyes scanning constantly and his ears attuned to every sound. Suddenly, the rhythmic clatter of hooves echoed from ahead, accompanied by the crisp clinking of metal. "Someone’s coming!" Li Feng quickly ducked behind a large tree, holding his breath as he observed. Soon, a group of soldiers in ancient armor appeared in his line of sight. They carried long spears, swords strapped to their waists, and rode atop tall warhorses with solemn expressions. "Are those… ancient soldiers?" Li Feng’s eyes widened in shock. He couldn't believe what he was seeing, yet the scene before him was too vivid to deny. "Did I… time travel?" he muttered to himself, a whirlwind of emotions surging within him. Taking a deep breath, he forced himself to stay calm. No matter what had happened, he first had to understand his situation. Quietly trailing the soldiers, he hoped to gather information from their conversation. However, the language they spoke was completely unfamiliar to him—an ancient dialect he couldn't comprehend. "It seems… I really have been transported to another time." Li Feng’s thoughts grew heavier. He knew the road ahead would be far from easy, but he had no choice but to face it. As night fell, Li Feng found a hidden cave to take shelter in. He built a small fire, sitting beside it, deep in thought. "I need to find a way back. But before that, I have to survive." Clenching his fist, his eyes flickered with determination. No matter what challenges awaited him, he had to press on. Just then, soft footsteps echoed from outside the cave. Instantly alert, Li Feng gripped his dagger tightly, his gaze locked onto the entrance. "Who's there?" he asked in a low, guarded voice. A figure slowly emerged from the shadows, moonlight casting a glow on their face—a face that was strikingly familiar. "Li Feng? Is that you?" the person asked softly, a trace of surprise in their voice. Li Feng froze, hardly daring to believe his ears. That voice, that face—it was his long-lost friend, Wang Hao. "Wang Hao?! How are you here?" Li Feng stood up, his eyes filled with disbelief. Wang Hao stepped into the cave, his expression complicated. "Li Feng, we’ve both been caught in this vortex of time. This world… is far more complex than we ever imagined." Li Feng fell silent for a moment, then took a deep breath. "What exactly is happening? Why are we here?" Wang Hao shook his head with a bitter smile. "I don’t know. But one thing is certain—we’ve been pulled into a conspiracy that spans across time." Li Feng’s gaze grew serious. He knew that from this moment on, his fate had changed forever. And in this unknown era, he had to carve out his own path.
