The true colors
Vivienne's POV.
The whispers erupted into a loud chatter as he said those words aloud. It hit me with a truckload of dirt and stone.
He basically said I meant nothing to him. It wasn't worth the trouble of making up even a sentence. The guests' eyes darted at me as if I was supposed to give an explanation for his loud statement.
Everything after that was a blur. My first meeting with the Lycan king, my husband… our alpha was a total disaster.
To make things much worse, we drove home on a different ride. I quickly took off the iron clad of a gown they made me wear just to get humiliated.
I wanted to snoop around the palace. Today had been a disaster, but crying wasn't going to make me feel any better.
Besides, Lysander wanted to know why she felt… something with Michael.
“I told you we can't jump to conclusions,” I whispered to myself.
“We can but…”
“But what? I thought mates were fated, you are supposed to recognize your mate the moment you see him, but you didn't,” I interrupted, walking down the hall and opening the empty rooms.
“But I… we felt something,” Lysander replied.
“Yeah, we sure did. Humiliation, shame. Words aren’t even enough. We haven't even seen him since we got back,”
We heard a footstep behind us and we quickly turned to see who it was.
It was an elder; two to be precise.
“Good day,” I greeted, bowing my head lower than they expected.
They weren't just any elders, but they were close to my father; he always invited them over for tea and news study.
For the first time in a day, I cracked a genuine smile. “It's so good to see you, Elders,” I added.
They narrowed their eyes at me when I stood upright expecting a hearty remark.
“Umm… at the wedding…” I paused, squeezing my left wrist and trying not to look them in the eyes. “I noticed my father wasn't present at the…”
“We'll have to stop you right there. Whatever questions you have we really don't care about them,”
“Huh excuse me!” I exclaimed, shocked at their reaction.
“Do you have a problem? Can't you understand English anymore?” Elder Merek fired.
Something was wrong, they never spoke to me this way before.
“Hey, it's me,” I had to make sure they knew who it was.
“We know,” he retorted.
“Where's this coming from? I wanted to ask you why my father wasn't present at this s**t hole of a wedding and you…”
A loud cackle from both of them cut me short. They cackled for almost a minute before they stopped, wiping away their smiles with a villainous smirk.
“You must have gone crazy. You think because you married the Alpha you can talk back.”
“No, that's not it” I replied immediately, taken aback and confused.
This was a new personality I was getting to know. I thought they liked me. Whenever they came around my house, they always gave compliments on how pretty I was, but this… this was a total shift.
“Look here, silly girl, you are no longer under the protection of your father. And don't even think you are under the protection of the Alpha. That man doesn't like you,” Elder Merek warned.
I knew that already, but they felt like adding salt to my open wound so I gasped silently. “He doesn't love you. He has never loved anyone in his entire life. Pray he doesn't kill you when he gets bored with you.” The other elder continued.
They proceeded to leave, but I stopped them with my hands stretched out and my shadow casting a veil over my eyes.
“Did you guys pretend to be nice to me because of my father? Did you use us?” I growled
“Yes, what took you so long to find out? Nobody likes Robertson. We only needed the opportunity that came with your name. Your dad could easily make anyone part of the elder council, of course, we were going to kiss his ass.”
“But now, no more. We've heard the rumours about your family, we know this marriage is just a front to save your father from crumbling under,”
“How dare you!” I launched a deafening slap on Merek’s face, my hands clenching as soon as he took a step back and widened his eyes.
“I should have known,” I fired. “You social climbers, you used us, you worthless imps,”
“What's going on here?” A voice thundered behind us. For a moment, I thought it was Michael. My breath hitched as all the confidence I had mustered up a few seconds ago faded away.
I turned towards the direction of the voice, breathing hard as the man shot a stern look at me.
“We were just having a little chat with…”
“This doesn't look like a little chat to me,” he cut in with a growl.
He glanced at me and I jerked slightly. “I'll be on my way,” I muttered, glaring at the elders.
Before I could take a step, the man spoke up with a cutting tone.
“The Alpha's not around.”
The two elders rushed out as he raised a brow and gritted his teeth.
“But I didn't… Who are you?” I questioned, terrified but fed up with the insults.
“You don't need to know,” he fired.
Hell no! I was done with the rude remarks they fired at me all day.
“I asked a question, don't you work here?” I spat out.
His fingers twitched, but I stood tall, making sure I did not break eye contact. “Are you gonna give me an answer or stand here all day?”
“The name's Stephen, our Alpha's army commander,” he clipped.
My eyes bulged in surprise and I drew back several steps. “You… You… um,” I stuttered terribly.
“You should get some rest. The Alpha is out on important business, he wouldn't like it if you are exhausted when he gets back,”
He walked away before I could think of a reply.
Just as I was about to retreat to my room, I heard a scream coming from the throne room. My ears perked up and my eyes darted at Stephen's shadow.
“A business?" I folded my arms. ,” I thought you said he's not available,”
He stopped, partially turning his face to me as the scream intensified.
“Tell me, do you think this is a great time to meet him when he hasn't called for you?” He questioned, cracking a smile as though deriving pleasure from the scream.
Who were these monsters? How did they get so heartless?
The scream filled the whole area like a shrill cry. We both knew that was the cry of torture, but why in the palace?
The cry suddenly stopped and Stephen walked away, mumbling inaudibly.
“Stay in your room and don't come out, you are safer if you don't disobey his orders.” He warned.
