A bone to pick.
Vivienne's POV.
All through the night, I couldn't stop thinking about the screams. What was really happening in his throne room? So the rumours were actually true? He was heartless, cruel, and wicked.
And I was his bride. His innocent victim.
I carried the burden of this thought unto the next day without shutting my eyes to sleep.
I mean, how could I when I literally could predict my life flashing before my eyes?
That morning, I refused to let anyone inside my room, not even the maids. I was tired of weeping, tired of feeling like s**t, but the depression hit harder than a rolling boulder.
Hours went by and the knocks continued in their numbers until one of the maids echoed through the door.
“My lady, forgive me, but you have a visitor,” she said softly.
“A visitor,” I sat up, fixing my attention on the door. “Who? Who's the visitor?” I asked.
“I'm sorry ma'am, but I do not know,” she replied, soft and weak.
It could have been my father or brother… or so I thought.
I quickly dressed up after having a shower and brushing my hair.
I put on a blue, fluffy ball gown that looked almost too official to attend to a visitor. It wasn't my fault that I needed a bit of comfort even if it was from the monster who sold me.
I ran along the hallways to the waiting room and flung the doors open with my eyes gathering with tears.
“Dad, I can't do this any…” I stopped, swallowing my words as the visitor stood up with her hands crossed on her chest.
“Well, well, well, if it ain't the backstabbing b***h of a friend.” Brianna fired at me, her expression an epitome of hate.
I stopped at the door, clasping my hands awkwardly and looking away. “Bri, I didn't know it was you,”
“Of course you don't, I bet you were busy getting down on your knees all night,” she hissed.
I rolled my eyes and shook my head in disbelief. “Okay Bri, can we just stop this fighting? Honestly, I don't even know the cause of the problem between us.”
“I've told you countless times, don't give me that crap,” she fired. “You can't play dumb, I bet you've been up to this for weeks.”
I stepped forward and spread my arms in the air. “No, no Brianna. I don't know what's wrong, I'm deadass serious,”
“If you could just explain why you are mad at me. Remember our promise. Please, I need you right now. I don't think I can do this on my own,” I sobbed.
For a second, she changed her expression into sympathy, but that didn't last a second. She frowned the next minute and tried to stop herself from giggling out loud.
“God, you are such a good actor! You had me fooled for a second there,” she snickered.
I gruffed angrily and clapped my hands at her. “Brianna, stop this. It's senseless, we shouldn't be fighting over petty stuff,”
“Petty!” She thundered. “You call this petty, you slut!”
I moved back, surprised and a bit scared. I wasn't expecting her to flare up with such intensity.
“You'll remain worthless, just like the piece of trash you are. Be happy for now, but know this, I'll be back to wreck your world into total chaos. Don't say I didn't warn you,” Brianna threatened, holding up a finger at my face.
I gazed in silence until she dropped her hands and picked up her bags to leave. “You are so lucky you are in the palace, I would have dragged those lace fronts out of your head,” she hissed, shrugging past my shoulders.
No, no. Anymore of this and I was going to lose myself. I began piecing things together. Brianna called me, furious on the phone and then I got home to the worst news of my life.
Coincidence? Nope, it wasn't feeling like it anymore. I needed answers and I needed them fast.
“I think you need to call your father,” Lysander said.
“No, I don't want to talk to him,”
“But we need answers right? I know I am not the only one who feels like all this isn't just some weird coincidence.”
“It could be,”
“Viv,” Lysander growled.
“Alright, let's talk to my father then. It's not like he cares anyway. If he did, he'd never send me to live here,”
I went back to my room to phone my father. He didn't pick up at the first ring, but I kept on calling, hoping to stop when he decided to stop ignoring me.
“Hello, my child,” he finally picked up.
“Don't call me your child,” I fired, “fathers don't sell their child for their mistakes.”
He heaved and stroked his beard. I knew him so well, I could tell what he was doing without actually seeing him.
“I did what I had to, Vivienne. It's not like I can refuse the words of our Lycan…”
“Why is Brianna mad at me, Dad?” I interrupted with an icy tone. “Did you have something to do with it?
He went silent for a minute, forcing me to speak up again. “Dad, tell me the truth. Why is Brianna acting so crazy? Were you meddling in my life again?”
“Of course not, it just sorta happened. Our Alpha didn't see her fit, so he chose you instead,”
What!
Brianna had a fling with the Alpha? Was he joking?
“Hello, dear. Are you still on the line?” He repeated twice.
“You knew Brianna was dating the Alpha and you sold me to him regardless! How twisted are you?
