Chapter10

The cold realization. Vivienne's POV. I had barely recovered from the shock when the second maid fell on her knees, her eyes fixed on the ground. “Have mercy on us, Luna.” Pigs should have been flying randomly because there was no way I was suddenly a revered figure. It literally made no sense. They were acting so tense… and scared. Scared to be around me. “Get up, will you? Please,” I whispered. “What's going on? Where… Why did the Alpha send this dress to me?” I asked. “It's a customary gown, hand-sewn by our pack's greatest designer. It's being passed down from generation to generation,” they replied with enough details. I scanned the dress again, shaking my head at the floral pattern of the dress. “Passed down? It certainly is,” I muttered. The maids were still jumpy but I pretended like I didn't notice it. “He wants you in his throne room in three hours,” she replied. “Of course he does,” I snorted. “Where's Donna? I'm surprised she…” “She's currently recruiting some new maids to work in the palace?” “New maids?” I questioned. “There's more than enough to work here, why would she... You know what?” I grabbed the package from them and smiled warmly. “Thank you very much. I'll be out when I'm done with my bath,” “Anything we could help you with?” They moved closer in unison, eyes wide and focused on me. I looked around and shook my head uncomfortably. “No thanks,” They hesitated to leave, but as I widened my smile and tapped my feet on the floor for them to leave, they crept out like criminals sneaking out of their prison cells. It took me some minutes to take a shower, stretch my hair by myself and put on the gown. By the time I was done, a different set of maids walked in and helped me with my makeup. I guessed the Alpha was hosting something pretty big to have me dolled up like I was going on a press run. We were done in about an hour, and as I stepped out, the guards straightened their posture and all the chatters in the hallway ceased. The maids stood frozen even before I got in close range. It felt weird. I felt an uncomfortable itch crawling on my skin. My curiosity heightened to its peak and as I spotted Donna attempting to blend herself in a corner, my brows arched up. “Donna,” I called out. She inhaled deeply and a fake smile crept onto her lips. “Yes Luna.” She moved closer and bowed her head as she stood inches away from me. “How may I be off…” “What's wrong? Everything feels weird. I know it's normal but today, it's off the scale,” I interrupted. Donna raised her head, her eyes seeming to reflect the confused look on her face. “What's with that look?” I asked. “You were so bold with the rumours of the elders yesterday. What's wrong now?” “It's nothing, Luna. We've all realized our mistakes,” she replied. Mistakes? What damn mistakes? “The Alpha made it pretty clear yesterday,” she continued. I made a stifled laugh and shine my eyes at her. “I seem to be unaware of whatever mistake you all made,” “It will never happen again,” Donna stated. “The maids have been taken care of.” At that moment, I blinked rapidly as a hint of realization rained down on me. “The maids, what maids?” I asked, my voice shaky. And low. “The maids in the garden. They defiled your name and the Alpha heard of it,” she replied. I gulped hard as a thousand thoughts ran through my head. “No. No,” I mumbled. “What happened? What happened to the maids?” I questioned, louder and firm. Donna swallowed hard, avoiding my eyes. She wrung her fingers and scraped her shoes on the floor. “They… they… it's already taken care of,” she stuttered. My breath caught, jaws wide open as I receded a step. “No, no, no,” “On the Alpha's command, I have replaced them with responsible and diligent…” “Steph!” I clipped, brushing past her as I headed straight to the throne room. Donna and two other guards followed behind me. Fortunately, I caught up with Stephen just before he could walk into the room. “Hey,” my voice cracked with emotion as my eyes welled up with tears. “What did you do!” I growled. He stared at me, his expression blank yet dark. “Do? Is there a problem, Luna?” “Yesterday, The maids, what did you do to them?” I yelled. “Tell me!” “Take it up with the Alpha. He gave the orders, I simply followed,” he replied calmly. “It didn't have to cost them their…” “Lives?” Stephen completed. “Have you forgotten the Alpha is a Lycan? You know how sharp his senses are, right?” “Yeah right!” I spat out. “I'm supposed to believe that he's actively trying to eavesdrop on conversations happening in the garden,” “Maybe he is? I didn't just stumble into the garden. He sent me. He has a mission for you,” Bullshit! I knew he wanted them dead. I saw the look on his face when Micheal inflicted pain on the prisoners. He wanted a piece of the pleasure and he knew Micheal would give him the order. “You know what? I'm done taking it up with you. The Alpha's the cause of this, I might as well let him know I can take criticism without cutting the lives of others,” I spat out. I turned to the door, shoving it open as I prepared to stomp into the room with a defiant look. Who cared if I was pushing his buttons? Who cared if I was going to hang on my last thread if I defiled his order and walked in without his request? I wanted justice. I wanted to stop feeling like I caused this pain myself. Well, things took a spiral to the total opposite as the door opened and I stomped in, barely taking a step as a number of wide, surprised eyes drifted in my direction. The room fell silent and so did my beating heart. My pumped shoulders slouched and my fast breath slowed up as Micheal leaned forward, lips pressed and eyes darting with a killer stare. “She came sooner than I thought.” He stated. “We've been waiting for your entrance, mate,” he called out. The chills from his statement made my gown feel tight. The veil hanging behind my nape felt like a rope choking on my neck. “Elders of Moonhowl pack, I formally introduce my mate to you all. She shall be my Luna and you shall respect her.” “She's mine and mine alone!”
