Saying Goodbye
Year One “Momma, wait up!” I skipped along in my crisp white dress, the seams on it pressed with starch into fine lines. “Hurry up, Pearl. We cannot be late!” My mother shook her head as she smiled at me, reaching her hand out for me to take it. “They’ll dock your father’s and my pay if we are even a minute over.” My mother held on tightly to my hand as I took it, scooping me up so she could walk ahead faster. “Now, what do we say when they ask you to do something?” “Hmmm… I say ‘yes ma’am.” My mother had been drilling silly questions as me for months, ever since she got a letter in the mail with a pretty silver envelope. “And what do you do when they ask you to do something you don’t want to do?” She glanced down at me as I buried my head against her shoulder, taking in her scent and rubbing my head against the fabric, wanting our question game to be over. “I have to be a good girl and still do it, or else mommy and daddy and big brother get in big trouble.” “Good girl.” My mom smiled and kissed me on my nose, stopping in front of the government building. The last time I was here, my mom had brought me for my naming day; the official overseeing it drawing a bit of my blood as my mom and dad had signed papers. “Remember, you’re doing this to help your big brother with school. It is a very important job you’re going to have.” “Very important.” I said under my breath, my face becoming serious as I scrunched my eyebrows together in a frown. I held my breath as my mom opened the door to the building, hoping at least they wouldn’t use a needle again on me. I used my hands to cover my own arms, just in case. “Sarah Fiddle here to release Pearl Fiddle.” My mother had walked us up to an older lady with greying hair, a stoic expression on her face. “Good, twenty minutes early.” She marked something down a clipboard, indicating my mother to set me down. “Twirl for me, Pearl.” She twirled her finger to indicate what I should do, watching me with a studious eye. “Yes ma’am!” I giggled, proud of myself for remembering what to do. “Hm… Very well mannered. Excellent. Light blond hair.. Blue eyes… excellent bone structure. Alright, stop now.” She held her palm up to me, making me pause mid twirl. “Good at directions…” she reached out a hand and pinched my side hard, making me bite down on my tongue. Mommy, daddy, and big brother need me. I didn’t say a word, my face going purple from holding my breath. “Quite good! Very little fat as well. Extra for that!” The woman smiled then, releasing my side. I rubbed the spot she had pinched, wanting to hurt to go away faster. “Did I do good, mommy?” I looked up to my mom and took her hand as she squeezed it in return. “Very good, baby. We’re almost done now.” She turned her gaze back to the lady, another woman coming over to join us. “So how much will be get?” “Since she’s here on time and is perfectly trained… hmm. Her posture could use some work, but that is manageable. I’ll say two hundred thousand.” My mother gasped at the amount, shock on her face as a suitcase was handed to her. “Do you want to say your goodbyes? Maybe wait for her dather to get here?” Moly mom shook her head, looking around all of the sudden. “He doesn’t know we’re her to be honest, so the faster she’s gone, the better.” “Oh. So it’s one of those situations. Don’t worry; we have guards waiting in case there is any problems that should arise. I understand most males feeling the need to protect their omega offspring; but mother’s know best. We cannot have them be burdens on the family.” “Exactly!” My mother looked relieved at the woman’s words, handing me over to her. “Pearl, take her hand and be good. Don’t forget what I’ve taught you.” “Alright mommy. I love you!” I smiled up at her, my mom looking away with a frown. “Alright, little girl. Let’s go introduce you to your new friends.” The woman took my hand and led me to a back room as I turned and waved one last time at my mom. “We’re going to get you right on the bus. You were the last one so thankfully we can leave a bit early today.” We went down a hall and through two doors before arriving at a large garage; men who looked scary frowning down at me as the woman brought me to the door in the side. I could hear soft chatter coming from inside the large black bus, the steps leading up it hard on my small legs. “Everyone, this is Pearl. Pearl, say hello and then go pick a seat.” I darted my head to the side of the woman’s legs, seeing more little girls like me all sitting down in the seats of the bus. “Hello, I’m Pearl and I like coloring.” “Hello Pearl!” All of them said in unison, their soft chatter and giggling recommencing. “Come sit with me, Pearl!” A girl with pigtails in her hair waved me over, grinning and showing off her missing front tooth. I went over to her, sitting down on the seat next to the window. “I’m Alice, but my mommy would call me Ally.” “Hi, Alice.” I smiled at her, twirling my hands in my dress. “Are you scared?” She whispered, making me nod my head. “It’s my first time away from my daddy.” I whispered, already missing him. Mommy had said we needed to keep this trip a special secret, but I always hated keeping secrets from him; it hurt my tummy. Just like our questions game had been a secret too. “I’m scared too, but at least I get to make new friends.” Alice beamed, sticking her tongue out at me and making me laugh. “Will you be my new friend, Pearl?” “If you will be mine too.” I smiled and held out my hand to her, just as I’d seen daddy doing when he finished his meetings. As soon as Alice took my hand the bus jolted, causing all of us to jump a little in our seats and giggle. I saw a large door open in front of us as we began to move, the scary men shifting into wolves and moving along with us. “Oh look! That’s my daddy!” Mom must have told him our secret then, him more than likely coming to wave goodbye. Ally looked around me and frowned, her nose scrunching slightly. “He doesn’t look very happy.” I focused more on my dad as the bus pulled out all the way, seeing him slap mom across the face and send a briefcase falling to the ground, green paper going everywhere. When he saw the bus, he froze; seeing me waving at him from the window. He shifted then into his wolf too, starting to chase after us before he was tackled to the side from one of the scary wolves. “Don’t worry daddy… I’ll be good so you don’t get in trouble.” I whispered, seeing him fight as we quickly picked up speed and lost sight of him.
