The night is still young

Michaela's POV -BGC, present time- As Lachlan and I made our way to the tables that had been put up next to the pool, we were met by loud music. Some people were wearing masks while others chose not to. Women dressed only in bikinis could be seen swimming in the pool, and others could be seen dancing on the floor to the house music that was being played by the DJ. “Stay by my side, El, and do not leave me.” He said as he ushered me to the group of males laughing at the center table. I maintained my composure as I walked beside him. Okay, Michaela, time for work. “Good evening, Atty. Sy!” The man in his late 30s greeted Lachlan and they did some fist pumps. “What a nice evening, Dr. Hendrick.” Lachlan put off his mask and pulled me closer to his side. Possessive. “And who’s the gorgeous lady in red?” The man named Dr. Hendrick asked. “I am Michaela, nice meeting you.” I was about to offer my hand for a handshake but the doctor kissed my hand instead. I was caught off guard by the gesture and inhaled deeply. “Come, both of you should be seated beside us. The birthday boy is not here yet. I will be back some time.” He gave us a nod and a tap on Lachlan’s back. There were 7 seats around the table, and there were two more unoccupied. One was beside me. I guess the other one is for the birthday celebrant. Lachlan sat on my right. “Lachlan, c’mon man, you did not introduce us to the young lady.” The man in a blue suit blurted. Lachlan just gave them a cold look. “Yeah, there’s no need for it, Greg.” Lachlan said. The man named Greg laughed. Oh, he’s got a dimple. “Hey, Michaela. I am Gregory, Lachlan’s closest friend.” “Drop the closest word, Greg. He might throw you out here in seconds." The man with the glasses interrupted. “I am Shaun, Lachlan’s cousin. Actually, including Greg too.” I put down my mask. “Oh, nice meeting you two then.” I said and plastered a smile. At the very least, the environment here was tolerable, and I was able to get my mind off of what had just occurred. I roamed my sights around the place and it was full of people coming from different walks of life. Lachlan leaned on me. "You look so gorgeous in that dress-no, you are gorgeous in whatever you wear, but are you feeling cold?" He whispered. I immediately straightened my back as I felt a warm palm on my naked back. "Uhmm…no, I am okay." I looked at him. The cold night is making me feel goosebumps, but I'm trying to conceal it from him. "I need to answer a call, I’ll be back.” He looked at me seriously and slowly traced my spinal cord. I gulped. The effect that he had on me never changed and it only builds every time our skin touches. A group of women was laughing across and they were looking at us. The men at our table were good-looking and such looks would definitely attract the attention of whoever looked at them, particularly, women. Lachlan walked near the pool and I watched every step he took as he made his way. He was on the opposite side and women were looking at him as he went to his place. Psh, yeah, whatever. Despite the fact that he was on the phone, he never wavered his attention from me. I looked away because I felt like it would melt me the way he looked and focused my sight on the drinks on the table, which were of high alcohol content. Speaking of legs, I must be careful with myself because I am not even wearing any undergarments right now. Now, I am thirsty. "You okay?" Greg asked me. "Yeah, I'm good, kind of thirsty." I shrugged. "Choose your drink here." "I kind of have a low tolerance for alcohol. The night is still young. I'll have these drinks later." Greg called a waiter and asked for my drink. "Give the lady her cocktail." I have a low tolerance for alcoholic drinks. "Uhm, water will do, I guess." I interrupted them. Although I work as a waitress at SiMon's, my tolerance never changed. "Give her both then." Greg said. I looked at him and he genuinely smiled at me. He's the complete opposite of Lachlan, who seldom smiles. Speaking of him, he was still talking with someone on the phone but his gaze looked so cold at me and Greg. The way he looked at Greg was enough to bury him six feet deep if looks could kill. I looked away from him and drank my water. I've never been this thirsty, yet the water never eased such a feeling. I could feel that someone was watching me and I knew that it was Lachlan. “Oh, by the way, Michaela, right?” Shaun asked. “Yes. Why?” “I would like to ask what the relationship is between you and Lachlan?” He said and looked at me intently. The atmosphere gets heavy as he asked about it. “We dont have a relationsip-” He cut me off. “We saw how he struggled for years at finding the woman that he met in Cebu 3 years ago.” Oh, Lachlan was searching for me? “Did he find her?” I know that the woman he is referring to was me. I just want to know how serious he was in searching. “We dont know, but he’s been getting better these days. I mean, for better, he seems not lost.” Lost? What happened to you these past years, Lachlan? Did my absence make your life miserable? “May I ask what happened to him?” Greg looked at Shaun as if they were contemplating whether to answer my question or not. “We are not in the position to tell you that, let him tell you if he opens up about it.” Shaun said seriously. “But one thing is for sure, the woman’s absence made him miserable.” Greg added. I’m lost for words. I don’t know what to say. I immediately drank the whiskey in front of me because the information that I had known from them was too heavy to handle. The cold yet sweet and smoky taste of the liquid lingered down my throat. I gulped the shot glass straight up. “Easy! Mate!” Greg laughed. “We thought you only wanted the water!” Shaun laughed and added. “Change of plans, I guess?” I said while raising the shot glass in the air. Did I make the right decision years ago, right? Damn, my conscience. You made the right decision, Michaela. Keep that in mind. Shaun called the waiter and asked for additional drinks to be served at our table. I glanced at Lachlan’s location but he was nowhere to be seen. Ha! He told me not to leave him, yet he’s the one who left me. We were laughing in our seats as bottles and glasses of beverages were scattered on the table and the alcohol slowly influenced me. I roamed around the place as people were dancing and grinding each other’s bodies. “May I ask who’s the celebrant? I mean, we were waiting for them for almost an hour.” “It’s Dr. Hendrick’s nephew Sebastian.” Shaun answered. “I’m hungryyyyy.” I suddenly blurted. Arg, I'm tipsy now. I never had my dinner. There was no food on the table, there was just alcohol and some finger food. I want a real dinner. The buffet is served near the pool but I may not be able to navigate my way as I am tipsy now. “Do you want some food? I can accompany you to the buffet table.” Shaun offered. I nodded as a response. Shaun helped me get out of my seat and as I was about to walk, it felt like the world had just turned 180 degrees. Shaun rescued me by holding my arm and walking me towards the table. These foods were not even familiar. “Thank you, you can leave me now. I can handle myself.” “No, you are drunk, Michaela. We can't leave you here alone.” “I said leave me alone, I just want to eat.” I shooed him. “Okay, I’ll be back at our table. Anyway, we can see you here from there.” He tapped my shoulder and returned to his seat. I busied myself as I managed to get some food. Pizza is the only thing familiar here. A woman who was holding a drink approached me as I was busy stuffing some food in my mouth. “Quite enjoying the food, huh?” She’s pretty but I dont like the way she looks at me. I just nodded in response. “Who are you with?” She said, raising an eyebrow. “Mr. Sy.” I replied shortly. She laughed. I dont know what's funny about the things I said. “Atty. Lachlan Sy?” “Yeah.” She slowly walked toward me. “You are only dreaming, Atty. Sy won't bring some beggars like you.” “Excuse me?” I stopped eating. “You heard me clearly.” And in a span of seconds, she poured the drink onto my head and I gasped. People were looking at us, particularly at me. “Oh, so sorry.” She smiled. I don’t know what to do. I wanted to fight back but the scrutinizing stare of the people inside froze me. I know I dont belong here and this is too much humiliating for me. I can't even fight for myself, I feel helpless, and I've been holding these tears from falling. I just want to vanish. “Kersley!” A familiar voice caught our attention and it came from my back. I looked in the direction of the voice and I saw a raging Lachlan approaching us. He’s with another man too. “Lachlan, she started it.” She said, acting like a victim of the situation. “I saw everything. I dont need your explanation.” Everything turned in slow motion as he took off his coat and put it on my shoulders. A tear fell from my eye because of what he did. He looked so angry yet I found comfort in his presence. “We have to go, Seb. Happy birthday again.” He nodded to the man who was with him. I tried to focus my sight on the floor as I couldn't face him or anyone from inside. I just can't fathom what happened. Lachlan held and helped me get through the crowd and he never uttered a single word. The elevator door opened and he clicked on the 28th floor and it closed. A deafening silence engulfed us. No one dared to utter a single word. I cried softly, not because of what Kersley had done to me, but because Lachlan had saved me. I didn't know where we were going, so I let him guide me to wherever we went. We reached the 28th floor and went to door 2802. He touched the screen of the door lock, scanned the black key card, and opened the door. “I'm sorry, I left you, El.” He said and he hugged me. My eyes welled up with tears the minute he said those words. Lachlan wrapped his arms around me and softly lifted my chin. He met my eyes and I could see the pain there. I’m sorry, Lachlan. He slowly lowered his head and was about to kiss me, but he stopped before our lips met each other. “No-” I did not wait for him to finish what he was planning to say as I poured every single emotion into the kiss that I planted on him.
