Michaela’s POV
-Cebu, 3 years ago-
I woke up early and felt a sudden pain in my back because of the long hours of sitting on the bamboo chair yesterday afternoon while watching the sunsets. Today is going to be my first day as an intern at Chiu Law and Auditing Offices. My undergraduate degree is in management accounting, and I applied to be an intern at VGS & Co. but they only catered to a limited number of students and it is funny to think that I was the last one to apply, hence they rejected my application. I have heard about Chiu Law and Auditing Offices, and it is known to be among the top 5 law and audit offices with branches nationwide, so I took the chance to apply and they have approved it. I am nervous not only because of the fact that law offices are known to have an atmosphere of seriousness and aside from dealing with legal matters, but I also don't know what I will be doing in the first place when I reach the place. The office is a 1-hour distance from home and, since my family doesn't have a car, I have to wake up early in the morning to get on public transportation. I picked up some nude-colored trousers, a button-down white polo, and black loafers. I’m trying to look formal and quite professional because I wanted to leave my bosses with the impression that I am dedicated to this internship. At the age of 20, I didn't know how to do my makeup so I ended up putting on some lip gloss and I did my eyebrows.
Jeepneys are the most accessible type of public transport in our place. Well, aside from the fact that the fee is cheap and affordable for someone like me, I am not fond of getting into motor vehicles that are air-conditioned because they make me feel sick, then I end up vomiting.
Time check, it’s 7:45 AM, the office will be open at 9:00 AM and I am now walking towards the entrance of the office. At this early time, a lot of SUVs were already parked in the parking lot, but what caught my attention was the black convertible Ford Mustang that is also parked beside the other cars. Huh, the owner of this one is quite rich, maybe he’s one of the clients of the office.
“Good morning, Sir.” I greeted the security guard at the entrance.
“Good morning, ma’am. The office is not yet open for clients.” He gestured to the office hours posted on the door.
“Uhm, sir. I am actually an intern here and this is my day as one.”
“Oh, I'm sorry, ma’am. I thought you were a client.” He said, scratching the back of his head.
“No, it’s okay sir. I know I'm quite early for today. This is my first day actually. May I get in? Or do I also have to wait until 9:00 AM?” I said, smiling at him.
“You can get in, ma’am. But I just want to say that Atty. Jak Chiu and his equity partners and family are inside for now. But don't worry, they’re in the conference room.”
“Uhmm, is that a bad thing or not, Sir?” I am nervous now for no reason.
“No, no, not actually. They’re good people. Well, don't worry too much about them.” He said while opening the door for me.
“Thank you, sir.”
“Just call me Kuya Bebot, ma’am.”
“Oh okay okay, you can also call me Mik, Sir– err I mean, Kuya Bebot.”
I went directly to my assigned table, for now. Because Atty. Chiu will be the one to give me some briefing about what my responsibilities will be as an intern here.
The room is spacious, and a combination of white and gray paint is used in the interior of the receiving hall for clients. While for the lawyers’ offices, they have opted to choose their own color of paint, and I know that for Atty. Chiu chose an all-white room. Atty. Chiu is around in his late 50s, but his physique is contrary to his age because he looks more likely to be in his late 40s.
I have not eaten my breakfast and my stomach is asking for food now. Glad I have some SkyFlakes biscuits inside my bag. I took some and at the same time, I put my phone away. I was about to open the packaging but a sudden child’s cry caught my attention.
Gosh, I'm the only one here and crying?!! A child’s crying? You’ve got to be kidding me.
It is really a human’s cry.
My curiosity urges me to locate the sound and it leads me to an open room at the back of Atty. Chiu’s office. I have never been to this room. The room looks like a living room.
I tiptoed to the open door, and the cry was getting louder and louder.
A child.
A little boy’s cry.
He’s crying while holding his Optimus Prime toy.
I immediately opened the door and went inside.
The fudge who leaves a child alone? The little boy is alone inside the room and he’s only left with his toys.
“Heyy.” I said walking to him.
The child stopped crying and looked at me.
And he continued to cry again. Gosh, people would think I made him cry.
“Heyy, baby, shhh.” I picked him up from the floor, carried him, and we went to the couch.
I put him on the couch and I kneeled in front of him. I got my handkerchief in my bag and wiped his tears away. He has gray eyes and this child looks so handsome.
“Are you okay? Are you alone, baby?” I'm trying to look him in the eyes but he's looking away.
He is shy. Pshh, kids.
“Yeshh, I am alone.” He said, then started crying again.
“How old are you? And what is your name?” I got up and sat beside him on the couch.
“I am 3, and I am Lyndon.”
“Hi, Lyndon. I am Mik.” I extended my right hand for a handshake but he suddenly sat on my lap, facing me, and hugged me. Pfttt, what a sweet little boy. I hugged the child back.
“Why are you here in the room, Lyn? Did someone leave you?”
“Nooooooo..Kuya Lan told me to stay outside the comfort room because he would pee but I saw a butterfly so I followed it here.”
We are still hugging each other.
Kuya? Kuya means an older brother in the Filipino language. So, he is not alone here in the first place, but his damn brother left him if he could just have brought the child with him. Irresponsible.
“Outside the comfort room?”
“Yeshh, Ate Mik. But I saw a butterfly and then I reached here, I wanted to go-but I don't know where Kuya Lan-” He started crying again. I rubbed the child’s back. I hate to see a child cry because of irresponsible adults.
Okay, the child is lost.
“Do you want me to carry you and wait outside? Maybe you will see him again?”
He nodded.
“Hey, Lyn. Are you with other people too? Not only your Kuya?” I'm trying to figure it out because it’s almost 9:00 AM and you know that my internship will start.
He never responded.
Fudge, he’s getting heavier.
“Baby? Lyndon?”
He fell asleep.
Goodness!
This brother of his would definitely get a punch from me for being so irresponsible to the point that he would leave the child alone. What if something bad happened to Lyndon?
It’s 9:00 AM already. My internship. Argh. This is all because of his brother.
We continued in that position on the couch and I closed my eyes to think of what would be my possible explanations to my bosses for being late though I was already inside the office.
If I go outside and check other places, the child may not be able to see his brother and I will be at fault for leaving the room. If I don't go outside, I will be late, but at least I have some explanations, and I hope they will accept it.
I stayed inside.
I closed my eyes and we continued in that position on the couch for minutes. I never dared to make a noise or move a little because Lyndon might wake up.
The door creaked open.
I did not open my eyes because my stomach is asking for food now. Arg, what a morning.
“Hey….”
I heard a man’s voice. But I thought he was just from my imagination.
“Hey… Miss?” He said again.
I suddenly opened my eyes but I couldn't move because Lyndon was sleeping.
What I see is a man standing in front of me and a manly perfume is engulfing us. He’s wearing a 2-piece black suit. He was holding his coat in his right hand while his other hand was holding an iPad. His white dress shirt is folded up to his elbows. He has thick black eyebrows and underneath them are his almond-shaped eyes, and I can't clearly see his eye color. He also has that cupid’s bow a full lower lip, and his upper lip is smaller than his lower lip. He has a slicked-back hairstyle and his suit is partnered with brown leather shoes. An expensive appearance it is. And I can't deny the fact that he looks so hot and I feel a sudden beat in my heart for no reason. f**k.
“Is that Lyndon?” He asked, raising his eyebrows.
“Yes.” And I was trying to get into a comfortable position because I felt the sudden pain in my back again.
He is scrutinizing me. I can feel it.
“I’m Lachlan. I was with him earlier but nature was calling me so I let him wait outside the comfort room.” He put his things on the table beside the couch.
Oh great. He’s the irresponsible one.
“Irresponsible.” I suddenly uttered.
“Are you saying anything?”
“Yes. You are an irresponsible freak for leaving the child alone.”
“Me? Irresponsible?” He walked in front of me. And put both his hands inside his pants’ pockets.
“Who on earth would leave a child alone?” I looked him in the eyes, and I was hooked on them.
“I told you earlier the reason for it, and you are not obliged to know it.”
“Me? Not obliged? Okay, I get it. But you left him here. Did you even know that he was crying and what if something bad will happen to him?” I asked in disbelief.
“No, that’s impossible. There are a lot of CCTV cameras here.”
Fudge, reasons.
“That won't change the fact that you were irresponsible.”
“Is he sleeping?”
He’s trying to change the subject.
“Yes. Definitely.”
He sat beside me, and f**k this heart. Why am I having a sudden irregular beating for no particular reason?
“Don't move, I will get Lyndon from you because he might wake up. We’ll be leaving now.” He slowly moved towards me since Lyndon’s face was on the center of my breasts, and both of his hands were holding my shirt at the back.
What was his name again? Lachlan?
He untangled Lyndon’s hands first and then I moved back so that he could get access to the child. He was about to lift Lyndon up but the child moved and hugged me again.
“Mommy…...” He said, eyes closed.
Small tears were coming out of his eyes.
I feel that the child is in pain.
I was caught off guard and I looked at Lachlan but I was also surprised to see that his eyes showed pain and then vanished.
Something is wrong.
“I will carry him, just bring my bag and his toys. Where shall we go?”
I managed to stand and waited for Lachlan.
“We’ll go to the parking lot. Would it be okay with you to carry him? I mean he is quite heavy. If you can’t, just let me-”
I cut him off.
“Let’s go now before he wakes up.”
Lachlan led me and widely opened the door as we were about to pass by my table. Atty. Chiu saw us and signaled that we should stop.
Fudge, my boss.
“Uhmm, good morning, Atty. Chiu. I-I didn't mean to be late on my first- '' Atty. Chiu cut me.
“Shhh. Lyndon is sleeping. It’s okay. Don’t think about your work. What is happening here?”
He asked me and made an interrogating look at Lachlan.
“Uhm, I was actually at my table but I heard someone’s crying so I followed the sound.” I couldn't keep eye contact with him, so I looked at Lachlan. And his eyes were so focused on me. I feel uncomfortable.
“Is Lyndon alone?” Atty. Chiu asked me again.
I don’t know what to say. If I lied to him, his impression of me would be a liar. If I were to tell him, I don't know what the relationship is between Lachlan and Atty. Chiu and telling him the truth might cause something bad?
Lyndon moved again and hugged me tighter.
I finally made my decision. This is what you get for being an irresponsible Kuya, Lachlan.
“Yes, Atty. He was alone when I saw him and he was playing with his toys, crying.” I finally said and I looked at Lachlan proudly as if telling the truth would cause him some trouble.
But I was surprised to see the amusement in his eyes.
“Alright, Ms. Shaunte. Actually, I am Lachlan’s uncle. Thanks for taking care of Lyndon on behalf of him. Anyways, you should go now. Don't worry about being late.”
“We have to go now, uncle.” Lachlan interrupted us.
Oh.
Did they just test my honesty? Lol.
Lachlan led the way and he occasionally touched my back as carefully as possible while I was carrying Lyndon towards the car that caught my attention earlier. The convertible one.
He opened the back seat for me and I was surprised to see a car seat installed in the center. Psh, he is an intelligent one for a child’s safety. He is really knowledgeable about baby stuff. I slowly put Lyndon on the seat. He moved a little bit but he is still sleeping. Lachlan moved to another door and went inside to fasten Lyndon’s seatbelt. I don't know what happened to this child but I know he’s undergoing something painful.
Lachlan sat beside Lyndon and looked at me straight in the eyes, down to my chest, and then to my eyes again.
“Thank you, Miss?”
“I am Michaela Shaunte. I'm actually an intern here.” I said, pointing to the office.
Lachlan smiled. Oh, those pearly white teeth.
“I'm Lachlan Antonio Sy. I'm actually Lyndon’s-”
“Brother?” I said with a questioning look.
“No, I am his uncle. His father was my brother.”
While he was mentioning the word ‘brother’, his eyes showed pain.
“Was? Umm I mean-”
“His parents actually died a month ago in a car accident.”
I don't know what to feel. I feel sorry for the child. At an early age, he had already lost his parents. And it pained me to see him in that situation and he even uttered his mommy earlier.
I somehow remember my older brother who also died a month ago. And I know how hard it is to lose a loved one.
“Oh, I'm sorry.”
“No, I mean. He’s left to me now, as of now, but my parents will be back in the Philippines in two weeks.”
I don't know why he is explaining it to me.
“Anyways, you are an intern here, right? You should go, it’s almost quarter to 10 and don't worry about Atty. Chiu, he’s a good person. I assure you.”
He was so focused on me and I couldn't keep eye contact with him, so I looked away.
I definitely should go now.
“I-I have to go. Take care of Lyndon.” I said, looking him in the eyes.
His eyes showed mixed emotions of lust, pain, and amusement.
He gulped and his Adam's apple moved.
“Yeah, see you around. Thank you again, Michaela.”
“You’re welcome, Lachlan.”
I was about to go outside the car but he called me again. So, I looked at him.
“Yes?”
“Hey, uhm, please button up your shirt.” he said straight to my eyes.
I immediately look down at my shirt and yes, my cleavage and undergarment are visible. Seriously? Is this the reason why he was looking at my chest earlier? Pervert.
“You perv-”
“No, no. I have seen a lot of it. Bigger than yours. So, it doesn't bother me. Don't worry, your shirt was unbuttoned when you put Lyndon on the car seat. So, no one saw it. Except me, of course.” He chuckled.
I buttoned up my polo shirt.
“Nice meeting you, Michaela.” He said seriously.
“Whatever.”
I stormed out of the car and I walked as fast as I could towards the entrance of the office.
Yes, what a good morning it is.
