At Adam’s reveal of where his frustrations lie with her previous ICU doctor, Jade squeezed his hand empathetically.
Jake piped up. “He’s an ass and everyone knows it. Don’t worry about the report to the board. And if we need to write our own statements we will. We got your back, man.”
“Thanks, man.”
“Don’t think anything of it.” Emmett said.
“So, what will happen if Nick does get ahold of the chief? Like what will need to happen to keep Jade from leaving this wing?” Mitch asked Adam.
“Hopefully all it takes is the chief calling or emailing Dr. Cayette that the order to take her to the psyche ward is unneeded and voided. Then disseminate those orders to those damn nurses standing outside her door.”
“Worst case is she has to be immediately evaluated by a psychiatrist to prove she doesn’t need to be in the ward.” Emmett added.
“Uhm. Does it help that I have been seeing a therapist before this incident? For quite awhile actually.” Jade asked.
“Oh. With the Crisis Center, right?” Mitch asked.
“Yea. I’ve seen Elizabeth Marshall and Sarah Todd. I usually see Sarah.”
“How long have you been seeing them?” Adam asked, pulling out his phone.
“A little over 4 months. I see them at least once, sometimes twice a week.”
“Fantastic.” Adam said, texting that useful piece to Nick.
“And suicidal thoughts were never an issue you had to cover?” Mitch asked.
“Nope. Yea, I was depressed, but not suicidal. I wanted to have my own life, and actually live the way I should have if it wasn’t for Lance. It just got hard dealing with all the pain, the trauma, the nightmares, and the self-doubt. But, that’s why I’ve been seeing them.”
“I’m glad you’ve been seeing them.” Jake said.
“Me too. They’ve really helped me come a long way. Especially to help break my mentality I was having towards my past abusive relationship. I had to basically recognize what was actually a harmful correlation and reset what my body was craving. Then I had to seek the comfort I craved from a healthy source.”
“What do you mean?” Emmett asked.
“I was basically addicted to this type of extreme comfort and validation that Lance would give after harsh treatment of me. So I developed this way of thinking that I couldn’t have comfort and love without the harm. What ended up helping me a lot was receiving, and giving, comfort and love without harm even being part of the equation.”
“And how did you do that?” Emmett asked a little harshly. Adam wondered if their level headed friend was feeling the sharp edges of jealousy.
“Linn’s kids.” She said sheepishly.
“What?” Emmett asked, his jaw basically dropping.
Jade laughed softly, “Linn has two very young kids. I absolutely love babysitting them. I’ve kind of fallen for them. They let me hug them all the time and when I watch them, we always watch a movie on the couch together after eating dinner. They snuggle with me and I cuddle them in return. Those moments ironically have given me the comfort my body needed, and there’s absolutely no harm that has befallen me, because well, they’re kids.” Jade shrugged. “It probably helps I really like kids, especially ones who may be too smart for their own good.”
Emmett was still a little slack jawed, but they all sat back smiling at her.
“Kids are awesome.” Jake said.
“Her kids are definitely too smart for their own good.” Mitch said.
The group was laughing at what Mitch said when Nick walked back into the room.
The entire room stopped laughing and turned to Nick to see what he had to say.
“Geez, it’s like I have the numbers for the winning lottery ticket.” He teased.
“Right now, you might as well.” Mitch lightheartedly said back.
“So I’m assuming you talked to him since you were gone awhile. What did he have to say?” Jade asked.
Nick smiled at her straightforwardness.
“It’s not exactly perfect and an easy scenario. Because of liability reasons, once ‘suicide attempt’ appeared on any documentation, some kind of psychic evaluation would need to take place. Adam texted me that you see two therapists at the crisis center and that you have an established rapport?”
“Yea, I usually see Sarah more often than I do Liz.”
“Perfect. Do you think you could get one of them to come here tomorrow?”
“I don’t see why not, I just need to know a time. What’s going on?”
“It sounds like if I can get a meeting set up with one of our psychiatrists and your therapists, basically prove you are already under care for mental health, and that this wasn’t a suicide attempt.”
Jade grabbed her phone off her hospital table.
“Okay, I’ll text them. Let’s get this meeting set up.” She looked up at her doctor, “Do I have to go to the ward until they meet, though?”
“No. You don’t.”
“Cayette sat on his ass this long before flexing, they can wait until the meeting.” Adam said.
Jake added, “I wonder if his jealousy of the two of you is showing.”
Adam and Nick looked at Jake in surprise. Jade looked at the two doctors then quickly turned to Jake.
“What do mean?” She said.
“Cayette has always been jealous of Nick and Adam. He’s been jealous of their career success, the rapport they have with nurses, and Emmett and I have wondered if he’s jealous of your guys’ personal lives. Some gossip has started circulating about Jade. Her tolerance to the medicine and alcohol that showed from the first night was enough to be subject of talk. Then her past injuries are also making her a bit of a legend around here. Now that its apparent the group of us have come to care for her, and Nick’s success in diagnosing and helping her down her recovery path must have been a hit for him.
I heard some nurses talking in the cafeteria about how the ICU nurses noticed Cayette’s lack of success in her treatment. I wonder if Cayette was privy to some nay saying and decided to show some prowess.”
“I’m tired of men trying to prove how macho they are by hurting others. He can go to f*****g hell before I bow to him.” Jade exclaimed heatedly.
She turned to each of the men in her room. “I have every one of you to thank, I know you have my back and I wouldn’t have known if I was in the right or wrong if it wasn’t for your validation.” Her gaze landed on her doctor, Dr. Spencer, and she spoke to him. “And thank you for being my doctor and all the headache that goes with it. I truly am grateful for all you’ve done.”
Nick smiled at her, “Think nothing of it.”
“Let’s get that meeting set up. Now, would someone mind telling those nurses to f**k off. I wouldn’t mind, but I’d probably end up getting booted out of the hospital for assault.” She said with a grin.
“My pleasure.” Emmett said eagerly, strolling to her doorway with Nick.
