CHAPTER SIX

Daniel stood in the quiet kitchen the next morning, sipping his coffee and staring out the window at the dew-covered lawn. The air felt heavier today, a subtle shift in the atmosphere that he couldn’t explain. He had spent the night replaying Ethan’s evasiveness, Olivia’s sudden distance, and the tension that seemed to thicken whenever they were all in the same room. It gnawed at him like an itch he couldn’t scratch. He turned when he heard footsteps approaching. Ethan entered, looking worn, as though sleep had been an elusive companion. They exchanged polite nods, the silence between them hanging like a storm cloud. “Morning,” Daniel said finally, breaking the quiet. “Morning,” Ethan replied, avoiding eye contact as he poured himself a cup of coffee. Daniel leaned against the counter, studying his brother. “You’ve been spending a lot of time out in the woods lately.” Ethan’s hand froze momentarily before he shrugged. “Just clearing my head.” “Anything in particular weighing you down?” Daniel’s tone was casual, but his gaze was sharp. Ethan hesitated, then shook his head. “Just life, you know? Work, family… the usual.” Daniel nodded slowly, though the answer did little to quell his suspicions. “Well, if you ever want to talk, you know where to find me.” Ethan gave him a tight smile, then mumbled something about needing to take a call and left the room. Daniel watched him go, a sinking feeling settling in his chest. --- Later that afternoon, Olivia sat in the garden, her fingers absently tracing patterns on the armrest of her chair. She had tried to distract herself with chores and errands, but the weight of her guilt was inescapable. The kiss with Ethan had fractured something deep within her, a crack in her carefully constructed life that she feared would only grow wider. She was startled when Daniel appeared, his shadow falling across her. “Hey,” he said, his voice gentle. “Mind if I join you?” She forced a smile. “Of course not.” Daniel sat beside her, his eyes searching hers. “You’ve been distant lately. Is everything okay?” Olivia’s heart raced as she struggled to maintain her composure. “I’m fine. Just… tired, I guess.” He reached for her hand, his touch warm and reassuring. “You can talk to me, Liv. About anything.” Her throat tightened the urge to confess threatening to overwhelm her. But the thought of seeing the hurt in his eyes, of shattering the trust they had built, held her back. Instead, she leaned into him, resting her head on his shoulder. “I love you, Daniel,” she whispered, her voice trembling. He kissed the top of her head. “I love you too, Liv. Always.” But even as he held her, Daniel couldn’t shake the feeling that something was wrong. Her words felt like an apology, a desperate attempt to hold onto something slipping through her fingers. And the more he tried to ignore it, the more the suspicion grew, a whisper in the back of his mind. --- Ethan sat in his truck, parked on the edge of a quiet clearing deep in the woods. The radio played softly, but he wasn’t listening. His thoughts were a chaotic mess, torn between guilt and longing, between the life he had and the life he craved. He pulled out his phone, his thumb hovering over Olivia’s name in his contacts. He knew he shouldn’t call her, that it would only make things worse. But the silence was unbearable, the distance between them a chasm he desperately wanted to bridge. Before he could make a decision, a knock on the window startled him. He looked up to see Daniel standing outside, his expression unreadable. Ethan rolled down the window, his heart pounding. “What are you doing out here?” Daniel asked, his tone casual but his eyes sharp. Ethan shrugged, forcing a laugh. “Just needed some space.” Daniel nodded, though his presence felt anything but casual. He leaned against the truck, crossing his arms. “You’ve been acting strange lately, Ethan. Liv too. Makes me wonder if there’s something I should know.” Ethan’s stomach dropped, but he kept his expression neutral. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.” Daniel’s gaze hardened, a flicker of anger breaking through his calm facade. “Don’t lie to me, Ethan. I’m not blind. Something’s going on, and I’m going to find out what it is.” Ethan opened his mouth to respond, but the words wouldn’t come. Daniel straightened, his jaw tight as he turned and walked away, leaving Ethan alone with the suffocating weight of his secrets. --- That evening, Olivia sat on the edge of the bed, her hands clasped tightly in her lap. Daniel stood by the window, his back to her, the tension in his shoulders palpable. The silence between them was oppressive, filled with the words neither of them dared to say. Finally, Daniel turned to face her, his expression a mixture of hurt and determination. “Olivia, I need you to be honest with me. What’s going on?” Her breath caught in her throat, panic rising. “What do you mean?” “You’ve been distant, avoiding me. And Ethan… he’s acting strange too.” Daniel’s voice wavered, the pain in his eyes cutting her to the core. “If there’s something you need to tell me, now is the time.” Tears welled in Olivia’s eyes as she struggled to find the words. She wanted to tell him everything, to unburden herself of the secret that had been eating away at her. But the fear of losing him, of destroying their life together, was too great. “I don’t know what you’re talking about,” she said finally, her voice barely above a whisper. Daniel’s jaw tightened, his disappointment evident. “Fine. If you won’t tell me, I’ll figure it out myself.” He left the room without another word, the sound of the door closing behind him echoing like a finality. --- In the days that followed, Daniel’s suspicion only grew. He began to watch Ethan and Olivia more closely, picking up on the subtle glances and the tension in their interactions. The puzzle pieces were falling into place, each one revealing a truth he was both desperate to uncover and terrified to confront. One afternoon, he found Olivia’s phone left on the kitchen counter, the screen lit up with a notification. His stomach twisted as he glanced at the message. It was from Ethan. "We need to talk. I can’t keep doing this." Daniel’s blood ran cold, his heart pounding as he stared at the words. The betrayal he had suspected was now undeniable, a truth that hit him like a punch to the gut. His hands shook as he placed the phone back on the counter, the weight of the revelation threatening to crush him. He didn’t confront them immediately. Instead, he retreated to the workshop, the familiar scent of sawdust and varnish a fleeting comfort. He needed time to think, to process the betrayal that had upended his world. As he worked on a piece of wood, his mind raced with questions. How long had this been going on? How could the two people he trusted most betray him in such a way? And most importantly, what was he going to do about it? The answers eluded him, leaving him with nothing but a simmering rage and a broken heart. The life he had built, the relationships he had cherished, were crumbling before his eyes. And as the sun set, casting long shadows across the workshop, Daniel made a silent vow. He would uncover the full truth, no matter the cost. And when he did, there would be consequences.
