The quarterfinals

The sun had barely risen over IN Tech University, but the campus was already buzzing with excitement. Colorful banners fluttered along the walkways. Students wearing their department jerseys hurried toward the gaming arena, discussing predictions for the quarterfinals. Today wasn't just another tournament day. Today, only four teams would survive. Inside the girls' hostel... Riya burst into the room, nearly dropping her phone. "Wake up!" Ananya slowly opened one eye. "What happened?" "We're trending!" "What?" Meera walked in, holding the university's student forum on her tablet. "Look." Ananya sat up and took the tablet. The headline made her freeze. 'Can Team Seven Become IN Tech's Next Champions?' Below it was a picture of their team after the leadership challenge. Comments poured in. Arjun is the perfect captain. No... Ananya is the real strategist. Team Seven is unbeatable. That girl keeps surprising everyone. Ananya sighed and handed the tablet back. "I wish people would stop talking about me." Riya laughed. "Not happening." "You've officially become the university's mystery genius." Meanwhile... Inside the Student Council Office... Arjun was reviewing the tournament brackets. Vikram leaned against the door. "I've got some bad news." Arjun looked up. "Team Four?" Vikram nodded. "They won every match without losing a single objective." "They're aggressive." "And their captain..." "...never repeats the same strategy." Arjun smiled. "Interesting." "You sound excited." "I am." Vikram shook his head. "Only you would call a dangerous opponent 'interesting.'" Outside the office... Kabir stood silently in the corridor. He wasn't there by accident. He had overheard every word. "So..." "Team Four." A slow smile appeared on his face. "This might save me some effort." He pulled out his phone and dialed a number. "They're facing Team Seven." A voice answered. "What do you want us to do?" Kabir looked toward the gaming arena. "Nothing." "Just make sure..." "...Ananya Rao is forced to reveal everything she knows." Half an hour later... The gaming arena was overflowing with students. Every seat was occupied. Even professors from other departments had come to watch. Professor Raman stepped onto the stage. "Ladies and gentlemen..." "Welcome to the Quarterfinals." Thunderous applause filled the arena. "The matches from this point forward will use tournament rules." "No second chances." "No rematches." "One loss..." "...and your journey ends." The atmosphere instantly became serious. The giant screen lit up. Quarterfinal Match One TEAM SEVEN VS TEAM FOUR The audience erupted. Riya jumped from her seat. "Come on, Team Seven!" Meera smiled confidently. "You've got this." Backstage... Team Seven gathered around a strategy table. Rohit studied the map. "This terrain is huge." Sneha looked worried. "There are too many blind spots." Arjun turned toward Ananya. "What do you think?" She examined the digital map carefully. A mountain range divided the battlefield. Dense forests covered the western side. The eastern side was an open valley. Most teams would choose the valley. "It's a trap." Everyone looked at her. "The valley looks easier." "Which is exactly why they'll expect us to go there." She pointed toward the forest instead. "We take the longer route." "It gives us cover." Rohit frowned. "But it'll take twice as long." Ananya nodded. "I know." "But we'll control the pace of the match." Arjun smiled. "I agree." Rohit laughed. "Of course you do." A loud buzzer echoed across the arena. Players moved toward their gaming stations. As Ananya adjusted her headset... She noticed someone staring at her. Kabir. He stood near the entrance with his arms folded. When their eyes met... He smiled. Not a friendly smile. A smile that sent chills down her spine. She looked away immediately. "Why is he always watching me?" The countdown began. 10... 9... 8... Professor Raman's voice echoed across the arena. "Players..." "Good luck." The battlefield loaded. Ancient ruins stretched across the screen. Massive stone pillars. Underground tunnels. A river cutting through the center. The match officially began. Just as Team Seven entered the forest... Arjun suddenly stopped. "Something's wrong." Rohit looked around. "What?" "There are no enemy scouts." Sneha frowned. "They should've found us by now." Ananya slowly zoomed out on the map. Then... Her eyes widened. "They're not looking for us..." "They're waiting." "For what?" Rohit asked. Before she could answer... A deafening explosion echoed through the battlefield. The bridge behind Team Seven collapsed into the river. They were trapped. On the giant screen... A message appeared. AMBUSH ACTIVATED The audience gasped. Team Four stepped out from the shadows, surrounding Team Seven from every direction. Their captain smiled through the in-game chat. Welcome to our trap. Ananya gripped her mouse tightly. "They predicted our strategy..." Arjun looked at the battlefield. "No..." His eyes narrowed. "They predicted you." The realization hit Ananya like a bolt of lightning. Someone... Had studied her playstyle before this match. And only one person at IN Tech had been doing exactly that. Kabir. She instinctively looked toward the audience. Kabir was already looking back at her. This time... He didn't hide his smile. The battlefield had turned into a prison. The bridge behind Team Seven lay in ruins, and Team Four slowly closed in from every direction. The crowd in the arena fell silent. "An ambush..." "They've trapped Team Seven!" On the giant screen, Team Four's captain typed a message. "The match ends here." Rohit clenched his jaw. "What do we do now?" Sneha's hands trembled over her keyboard. "They've blocked every exit..." Arjun didn't take his eyes off the screen. Instead, he looked at Ananya. "What are you thinking?" She zoomed out the map. Every route they had planned was gone. The enemy had predicted everything. For the first time in the tournament... She couldn't see an obvious answer. Kabir watched from the back of the arena. His smile grew wider. "Let's see how you escape this one." He wasn't cheering for Team Four. He was watching Ananya. Every reaction. Every decision. Every second mattered. Back on the battlefield... The enemy captain ordered the attack. Four opponents rushed toward Team Seven. "Rohit!" Ananya shouted. "Fall back!" "What? We finally have a chance to fight!" "That's exactly what they want." Rohit hesitated for a moment before following her command. Arjun noticed something. She wasn't trying to win. She was buying time. Ananya's eyes moved across the battlefield. Broken towers... Collapsed walls... A dry riverbed... Then... She stopped. "There..." Arjun followed her marker. "The river?" "It isn't completely dry." He looked closer. A narrow stream flowed beneath the cracked stone. "So?" "If we break the western dam..." "The water will flood the lower valley." Rohit frowned. "But we're standing in the valley." Ananya smiled. "Not for long." "Everyone..." "Move to the northern cliff." No one questioned her. Rohit and Sneha immediately ran toward higher ground. Arjun covered them from behind. The enemy laughed. "They're running!" "Finish them!" As Team Four chased them, Ananya quietly separated from the group. She slipped through a narrow tunnel hidden beneath the ruins. "What is she doing?" one commentator asked. Professor Raman leaned forward. "She's setting something up." Inside the tunnel... Ananya found the old control mechanism connected to the dam. Its health bar was almost empty. "One hit..." She whispered. "Please work." Her character raised its weapon. BOOM! The old structure collapsed. For one second... Nothing happened. Then... The ground began to shake. A roaring sound echoed across the battlefield. Water burst through the broken dam, racing into the valley below. The enemy players froze. "What—?" The rushing current swept them off balance. Their formation broke apart. The audience leapt to their feet. "She changed the entire battlefield!" "What a play!" "Now!" Ananya shouted. Arjun reacted instantly. He led the counterattack from the high ground. Rohit charged into the scattered enemies. Sneha kept everyone alive with perfectly timed support skills. Within moments... One opponent fell. Then another. Team Four tried to regroup, but the flood had already separated them. Their captain gritted his teeth. "Retreat to the Crystal Core!" But Team Seven was faster. Ananya marked a shortcut across the cliffside. "This way!" They reached the objective just seconds before Team Four. The final battle lasted less than a minute. A brilliant combination from Arjun and Rohit pushed the enemy back. Sneha activated her ultimate support skill. Ananya captured the Crystal Core. The arena speakers thundered. VICTORY! TEAM SEVEN ADVANCES TO THE SEMIFINALS! The crowd erupted into cheers. Students stood, clapping and shouting Team Seven's name. Professor Raman walked onto the stage with a smile. "Excellent match." He looked toward Team Seven. "Your opponents prepared for your previous strategies." He paused. "But great players don't rely on old habits." "They adapt." His gaze settled on Ananya. "Today's comeback was possible because someone remained calm under pressure." The audience applauded once again. Ananya smiled shyly. "We all trusted each other." Professor Raman nodded. "And that's exactly why you won." As students began leaving the arena, Kabir remained seated. He replayed the match on his tablet. Again. And again. He compared several moments with old tournament footage. The similarities were there... But so were the differences. He slowly closed the tablet. "No..." "I'm still missing something." "If Ananya Rao is really ShadowFlame..." "I need proof." He stood up and slipped the tablet into his backpack. "I'll wait." "Sooner or later..." "You'll make a mistake." Outside the arena... The evening breeze cooled the campus after the excitement of the match. Ananya walked toward the exit, exhausted but relieved. "Good game." She turned. Arjun stood beside her. "You stayed calm when everyone else panicked." She smiled. "I almost didn't." "But you did." There was a brief silence before Arjun continued. "A few of us are meeting tomorrow at a café near the campus to discuss strategies for the semifinals." "A few of us?" He nodded. "Me, Vikram... and if you're free, you." Ananya thought for a moment. "Okay." "I'll come." "Great." They exchanged a smile before walking in different directions. From a distance... Kabir watched them leave. He didn't think they were hiding gaming identities. He only saw two talented teammates growing closer. And he wondered... "Could Arjun unknowingly become the key to uncovering Ananya's secret?" A faint smile crossed his face. "This is getting interesting."
