Jayden's POV
'Lake Eastbound'
The surface was smooth and glassy, reflecting the trees and the clouds like a mirror and for someone who didn't consider herself a swimmer, the sensation of going through the water was strangely liberating. In a sudden burst of resolve Jane dived in, twisting around as she swam deeper. She felt the cold around her, and then she came up to the surface. She dived in again, swimming out into the open water. She went deeper and deeper, until she was far out of her depth, then she began to swim back toward shore.
The sun shone down on her, the light dancing across the water, reflecting off the ripples in the lake. The sound of the waves lapping at the shore was soothing.
Although the lake was calm and serene her mind churned with the memory of her last fight with Jim. It had been a heated discussion, and she still felt the anger bubbling under the surface.
A man who had been so charming and easygoing, always quick with a joke or a smile. He'd made her feel alive, like anything was possible but lately She felt like they were growing apart, as if he'd become a different person, cold, distant, like a stranger she didn't know anymore.
"You're truly an embodiment of all that's beautiful"
The voice resonated within her. She turned around, and there he was - her husband, or someone who looked exactly like him. He stood there, tall, with strong broad shoulders, his torso was strong and powerful but there was gracefulness to his movements that belied his strength.
Something was different about him, something that Jane couldn't quite put her finger on.
"I must be under your spell you siren, you. " A slight smirk played across his lips.
Jane tried to appear unaffected by his presence, even though his words had released a swarm of butterflies fluttering in her stomach. She took the shirt he held out to her, as their fingers brushed lightly against each other it sent jolt of electricity through her body. The man standing in front of her was her husband for two years, she ought to have been used to his touch but instead, the way her body reacted was... odd.
Whatever.
Jane shook her head to clear her mind, the annoyance she still felt over their last argument stil hoovered below the surface.
She pulled on the white cotton shirt, the fabric soft against her skin. It was slightly transparent revealing the outline of her red bikini underneath. She could feel the cool breeze against her damp skin, her hair dripping wet. She tried to keep her mind focused on the simple task of buttoning up, but her thoughts kept returning to him, to the way he had looked at her, to the moment their fingers had touched.
The more she assessed him, the more he seemed to change before her eyes. His dark brown eyes held a new intensity, his movements more fluid.
The energy radiating from him was different. He seemed taller, somehow, more imposing. There was a new confidence about him, an intensity that she'd never seen before.
She took a step closer and stopped just a foot away from him, close enough to see the flecks of gold in his dark brown eyes. A scent entirely foreign wafted through the air. Rich and earthy. It lingered on the air filling her senses till her eyes spotted something else that was new to her, shades of rich golden yellow on his hair.
"your hair... It's changed. It's... different."
A smile lit up lit up his face like sunlight breaking through the clouds. "You've noticed that, have you?" he asked, his voice low and soft.
Jane swallowed hard, her heart pounding in her chest. "Yes," she managed to say, "It's... not the same color."
He lowered his head so that his gaze was level with hers, his eyes open and honest.
It was as if he was inviting her to look into his very soul, to see the truth of who he was.
There was no defensiveness, no pretense, just a quiet, unspoken invitation to truly see him.
"Is that all you noticed?" he asked, his voice low and seductive. "Or did you notice anything else?"
And before she could answer, he reached up and brushed a strand of her hair behind her ear. His fingers were warm and gentle, and Jane had to force herself to breathe.
"Is there something else you noticed?" he asked again, his eyes searching hers. "Something else about me that's different?"
Jane gazed at his smile, taking in the gentle curves of his lips, the way his eyes crinkled at the corners, The equisite brilliance of his striking, perfectly aligned teeth.
"your... smile," She said. A hint of wonder and curiosity in her voice
"What do you mean by that?" His smile brightened and it was as if he had cast a spell on her. a spell that made her unable to look away.
His teeth were different than she remembered. Perfect, like something out of a dream and her arms flailed in front of her as of trying to grab hold of the right words, but they just remained out of reach."You just... you seem different. In a good way. There's something about you that's... I don't know, it's like you're radiating light."
He looked at her for a long moment, and then he chuckled softly.
In her state of quiet amazement Jane noticed something she hadn't registered before. The shirt draped over her body was at least two sizes too big for her, the hem falling way below her thighs. And as she looked closer, she saw that it wasn't hers at all.
The shirt was clearly made for a man, and it was a style that she'd never seen her husband wear before. It was like some kind of joke, or a riddle, and she was starting to feel a bit uneasy...
