ChapterOne
LUNA'S POV.
“Can't you do anything, right, you stupid b***h!?”
I flinched as my step mother threw a plastic cup at me from where she stood at the front of the kitchen door.
“W-what's wrong?” I asked, trying to placate her, but I knew that no matter what I did, she couldn't be pleased. Plus, she was drunk. I could tell from her red eyes and the way she swayed on her feet.
She had had it in for me ever since my father married her after my mother's brutal death. My mother had been a witch - the only one in the pack- and that had made her a cruel target for everyone in the pack.
She had died when she'd predicted the death of an Alpha. The prediction had come true and the entire pack had pointed fingers at her, claiming she had been responsible for the death. They didn't care that the Alpha had been from a neighboring pack, all they cared for was that she was a messenger of death and that she deserved death in turn.
She had been stoned to death after been bounded and tied up. I had been five when it happened, but that didn't stop the pack members from continuing the hatred with me.
For fate not to repeat itself, I barely used my powers and mostly kept them to myself. The only time I used them was when our new Alpha called me in for some healing on a wounded warrior. He and a few others were the only ones who wanted to associate with me.
“b***h, I'm talking to you!” A slipper came flying and it hit the side of my head.
The knife in my hands began to shake. Marie, my stepmother saw it, and smirked.
“What are you going to do, you little witch?!” She asked, moving towards me. “Want to use your powers?” She taunted.
“No,” I replied, trying to stop my voice from quivering. Asides from healing that was approved by the Alpha, I was banned from using my powers.
Witches had been very powerful creatures in the centuries past, ruling over all other creatures. Like it had been with my mother, it was a prediction that had brought an end to them. They had predicted about vampires arising but jealousy had blinded the other creatures from taking their prophecy seriously. When the vampires came, they managed to turn the wolves against the witches and their downfall began from there. But the stigma and hatred still clung from centuries to centuries.
“You burnt my dress,” Marie said from beside me. “You burnt the f*****g dress I asked you to iron out!”
“I'm sorry,” I said, knowing fully well that she lying and just trying to look for my trouble.
She swayed in her feet before turning back. “b***h!”
I watched as she staggered out of the room and gave a sigh of relief. Thank Goddess.
My phone beeped on the counter and I saw that it was message from the Alpha. They needed my attention at the packhouse. I sighed and quickly finished with my tasks in the house before heading out.
My life was not at all rosy and I was just trying to get by but there was a spot of brightness that eclipsed the darkness for me.
Caleb. My mate.
I had always considered myself lucky for getting my mate at an early age. It meant that I was spared the anxiety and fear that people get when they didn't get their mates on time.
Caleb adored me and I loved him with all of my heart.
That was why I could endure it all and also why I ignored the rumors that started floating around - rumors that he was being seen constantly with Melody, my number one enemy.
I loved him and he loved me.
“Hey, bitch.”
I sighed. It was Melody. Think about the devil and she appears. I ignored her and focused on where I was going.
“Deaf, Luna? Can't you hear me?”
I turned around at her. “Look, Melody —”
“Oh, so you aren't deaf and can talk?”
“What do you want? I have no time to waste on you.”
She smirked. “I already got what I want from you. I hope you've heard the news that Caleb and I will be going through the bonding ceremony next week?”
“Sorry to burst your fantasy bubble but Caleb is my mate and will be going through the bonding ceremony with me.”
Despite the fact that Caleb and I had found each other early, we still had to go through the bonding ceremony that always took place when mates turn twenty two.
Caleb had turned twenty four last week while I just turned twenty-two a few days ago, meaning that I was now of age to take part in the ceremony.
Melody laughed loudly at what I just said, then smirked after she stopped. “Keep dreaming,” she said, taking a step closer to me. “Caleb is mine.”
When I spoke, my voice came out calmly. “You must have hit your head on something, Melody. Do you need me to give you some potions to make you feel better? Don't worry. It's free of charge.”
“Talk all you want, b***h. But he's mine already.”
I kept my voice light as I said, “Hmm. Being delusional can be the solution, my dear. Keep it up,” With that, I sidestepped over her and continued on my way.
I wasn't scared or afraid of what she had said. Caleb and I belonged to each other and there was no one or anything that can come between us.
“Hey, Luna,”
“Hey,” I replied. It was Lorelia, the mate of Caleb's best friend.
“Was Melody bothering you again? What did she want?”
I waved an hand, “I really don't have her time. She's been talking trash as usual.”
Lorelia moved forward and tucked my arm in hers, patting me. “You don't have to let her bother you. Just ignore her. Where are you heading to?”
“To the pack house. The Alpha just sent me a message to come over. Beta Landon fell off a tree and dislocated his
arm. I'm needed for the healing.”
Lorelie gaped. “Fell off a tree?!”
“That's what I heard.”
“Goddess. Being a witch must be exciting. All sorts of ailments to cure.”
I had to giggle. “I know, right? See you later.”
We hugged and went our separate ways. After the healing, I decided to go see Caleb. I didn't meet him at home, but I met his creep of a brother, Dale.
“Is Caleb home?”
He grinned. “No.”
I turned around, ready to go.
He reached out an hand, placing it on my arm. “Why don't you stay a while yet? He'll be back soon and I can keep you company.”
“I'll rather leave. Let go of my arm.”
He didn't reply my request. “You sure you don't want to stay? You and I can have a good time.”
“Let. Go. Of. My. Arm,” This time, I made my voice louder.
“Ohmygoddess!” He suddenly screamed, throwing my hand aside violently. “Ohmygoddess!” He repeated again, grabbing his left wrist.
“What is going on?” The voice was that of Caleb's oldest brother, Gabe, as he entered the room from outside.
“S-she burnt me! She burnt my hand with a spell!”
“What?!” I whirled back to face him. “I didn't hur—” I stopped short because right there on his palm, I could see smoke emanating and leaving injury on the palm. “I didn't — I didn't—”
Gabe sighed. “What did you do to her, Dale?”
“I didn't do anything, I swear! I only laid a hand on her arm when I tried to convince her to stay and wait for Caleb.”
Gabe turned to me. “Is that so?”
“No! I didn't do anything to him!”
“Lying b***h,” came another voice from within the room.
It was Melody.
How had she gotten here?
“I saw you with my own two eyes.”
“You weren't even anywhere near here!” I said, hotly, anger
clouding my eyes.
“Oh, shut up!”
“Enough! Enough!” yelled Gabe. Then he sighed and turned to me. “Look, I know you and Dale don't get along much but don't you think what you did is a little far-fetched?”
“I did nothing to him! I didn't touch him!”
“Then why does he have a burn on his palm?” he asked, gesturing to the writhing and hissing Dale.
“I don't know! I didn't touch him!”
“He couldn't have done that to himself, could he?” he asked.
Melody tsked and spoke from where she stood. “I can't believe you think such a evil, lying b***h like you will end up with Caleb.”
“Leave him out of this!”
She took a step forward, daring me. “And if I don't?”
Gabe stretched out his arms between us. “Both of you, stop. Please. Luna, can you please heal Dale so we can all forget about this?”
I spoke up boldly. “No, I will not. I didn't do it and I will not be healing him.”
“Luna, I —”
I didn't let him speak finish as I cut him off. “Please, tell Caleb I came over.” With that, I turned around and walked out the door.
