“Please don't let the rumors be true, Caleb!” I begged him, clutching his hands desperately. I had thought I could survive and deal with this heartbreak, this pain that was threatening to shatter me and swallow me whole, but I couldn't. I couldn't live without him.
“Look, Luna, I'm sorry but I have to go. I only came to check on you.”
I refused to let go of him. “Please don't throw our years together away because of her. We can do this. Whatever the problem is, we can fix it. Please, Caleb. I'm begging you!”
“Luna, I can't. I have to be with her.”
“Why?” I asked. “Why?”
He shook his head, opened his mouth, “I just — It can't work out between us anymore.”
“Yes but why? Give me a reason. Give me a valid reason. A reason to move on. Tell me, Caleb. Did I get uglier?”
“You're not ugly, Luna.”
“Am I too short?! Too tall for you?! Too tanned?! Tell me and I'll fix it!”
“You're — you're perfect the way you are, Luna. Believe me.”
“That's a lie! That's a f*****g lie, Caleb! No one throws perfection away for nothing.”
He tried to grab my hands. “Look, Luna, another man will come along. A man made just for you.”
I shook my head furiously. “No. No, Caleb. There is no one else for me except you. You. Please don't do this. I love you.”
“I love you too, Luna. I always will.”
“Yes. Tell me why you did this then.”
He shrugged my hands away from him. “I have to go. I'm sorry.”
“I won't give up on us, Caleb! I promise. I won't give up on us!”
He left without a word or another backward glance.
His father came to gloat the next day.
“How're you enjoying the breakup with my son? Seems I don't
need to drag you to the elder council, afterall. This is enough suffering for you.” Arrogant and bold, he took a step closer to me, cocky. “Wanna know why he did it?”
“Get your filthy self away from my doorstep.”
“Not yet. Wanna know why he did it? Because I told him to. Because it's been arranged since they were babies that they would end up together.”
“You used your children as business pawns?” I asked, sick and shocked beyond words at what he had said.
“Not only that, pretty. Caleb knows that going against my wishes meant he won't get a dime of my wealth.”
His words rang in my ears with an echo. Caleb had given me away because of his father's wealth? Because of his father's money?
No, I thought in disbelief, shaking my head. It couldn't be.
“Do what you will with that information.” The man winked at me. “See you around, witch.”
I staggered inside the house, my heart racing as I managed to pull myself to the sofa.
He had thrown me away because his father had wanted him to. He had thrown me away because of his father's wealth. He hadn't been able to stand up to his father.
But no, he wouldn't do that, my mind screamed. Our love was more than this, was more than all of the money in the world. Caleb wouldn't do this. He wouldn't.

Lorelie met me on the same spot hours later. Immiediately, she gathered me in arms.
“I heard the news. I'm so sorry. So, so sorry.”
I shook my head wearily against her. “It's not your fault. Stop apologizing.”
“If it helps, Micheal is not talking to Caleb as well.”
“It's not Caleb's fault as well. Melody must have used a spell on him.”
Lorelie's eyes was full of pity as she said, “You're the only witch in the pack, Luna.”
“But not the only witch in the word.”
“Love spells are the hardest to cast, Luna.”
“But she found one person who did it, did she not? I'll find someone to reverse it as well. She did something to him, I'm sure of it.”
“Caleb did this of his own free will,” she said gently but firmly.
“There is no spell.”
So do you want to tell me that the dreams and plans are all gone? Just like that?
I had thought everything would be smooth and easy for me ever since I found out that Caleb was my mate but it seemed I had been living in a fool's fantasy.
All the rumors had been through. I had shrugged them off, hoping that they were nothing but baseless and false accusations. I had thought that they had been jealous of our love and what we had together. If only I had listened then.
“Luna, please, you'll hurt yourself if you keep on crying this way.”
Crying? Had I been crying? I touched my palm to my face and it came back wet.
My fairytale life wasn't going as plan. Ever since I had learnt that Caleb and I were mates, I had envisioned a perfect, blissful life for the both of us. A life where nothing or anyone could tear us apart. I had woven our lives like the lives of the characters in a fairytale. A perfect life for a perfect couple.
How wrong I had been. In a few days, they would be going through the bonding ceremony then he would take her to his home and to the bed I had spent countless nights in. He would go on to live a life that I wasn't included in, a life that I wasn't going to be a part of.
No. No, I wouldn't let that happen.
“Let what happen?” asked Lorelie, looking at me with a mixture of pity and fear.
I wasn't aware that I had spoken out loud.
“Luna?” She called again. “Let what happen?”
I only shook my head in response. I knew what to do.
