CHAPTER 2

Sophia's point of view: The next morning, I woke up with a throbbing headache, my mind still racing from the events of the previous day. I couldn't sleep, my thoughts consumed by the daunting task ahead. Rachel has downplayed the situation, saying it was just a temporary arrangement, but I had a nagging feeling that Asher would make my life miserable. As I sat at my kitchen table, staring blankly at the plate of food in front of me, my appetite was non-existent. The clock on the wall read 9 am, and I knew I had to leave soon. My stomach was in knots, my anxiety building with each passing minute. Just as I was about to force myself to take a bite, my phone buzzed. A text from Rachel: "Good luck today, Sophia! You got this!" I rolled my eyes, feeling a surge of frustration. Easy for her to say, I thought. She wasn't the one who had to deal with the demanding and ruthless Asher Blackwood. With a deep sigh, I pushed myself up from the table, my heart heavy with trepidation. I had no idea what the day held, but I knew it wouldn't be easy. As I headed out the door, I steeled myself for the day ahead. My determination to succeed is brighter than my fear. As I arrived at the Blackwood Industries building, my nerves were on edge. I took a deep breath and stepped out of the elevator, making my way to Asher's office. His assistant, a stern-looking woman, greeted me curtly and led me to his office. Asher was already seated behind his desk, his eyes fixed on me as I entered. "Ah, Sophia, good morning," he said, his tone crisp and businesslike. I nodded, trying to hide my anxiety. "Good morning, Mr Blackwood." He gestured to the chair opposite him. "Please, sit down. We have a lot to discuss." I sat down, my heart racing as he began to outline his expectations for the gala. His demands were exacting, and I found myself struggling to keep up with his rapid-fire instructions. As the meeting progressed, I felt my frustration growing. Asher was impossible to please, and I began to wonder how I would survive working for him. Just as I thought the meeting was ending, he dropped a bombshell. "Oh, and one more thing, Sophia. I expect you to accompany me to all the social events leading up to the gala. We need to present a united front, after all." My jaw dropped. "What? But... but that's not part of my job description!" Asher's smile was cold and calculating. "Consider it a bonus, Sophia. You're now an integral part of my team." I felt a surge of anger and resentment, but I knew I had to keep my cool. For now, I was trapped in Asher's web and I had to play along if I wanted to survive. I left Asher's office feeling frustrated and trapped. I couldn't believe he was forcing me to accompany him to social events. I felt like I was losing my independence and autonomy. As I walked back to my car, I couldn't help but wonder what Rachel had gotten me into. Why has she recommended me for this job without warning me about Asher's demanding nature? I decided to call her as soon as I got home. "Rachel, what's going on?" I asked, trying to keep my voice calm. "What do you mean?" She replied, sounding innocent. "Asher Blackwood is impossible to work with! He's demanding and controlling, and now he's forcing me to accompany him to social events. What did you get me into?" Rachel sighed." I'm sorry Sophia. I didn't realize it would be this bad. But you have to understand, that Asher is a powerful man, and he gets what he wants. Just try to survive the next few weeks, and it will all be over." I shook my head, even though she couldn't see me. You're not the one dealing with him every day." Rachel hesitated." I know, Sophia, but I believe in you. You're strong and capable. Just hang in there, okay?" I sighed, feeling a mix of frustration and resignation. "Okay, fine, but if I don't make it out alive, I'm blaming you." Rachel laughed. " Don't worry, Sophia. You'll be fine. And who knows, maybe you'll even learn to like Asher." I rolled my eyes. "Yeah right. That's not going to happen." As I hung up the phone with Rachel, I couldn't help but feel a sense of unease. I had a feeling that Asher was going to make my life miserable, and I wasn't sure how much I could take. I decided to try to focus on the task at hand and make the best of the situation. I spent the rest of the day going over the plans for the gala and making a list of things I needed to do. I was determined to prove to Asher that I was capable, no matter how difficult he was being. I was exhausted, both physically and mentally. I couldn't wait to take a hot shower and crawl into bed. Rushing towards my bathroom, a sigh left my lips when I felt the cold water run down my body. This felt nice. When I was done, I walked out with my towel wrapped around my body. As I was getting ready for bed, my phone buzzed. I hesitated for a moment before answering it, wondering who would be calling me at that hour. "Sophia, it's Asher," the deep voice said, sending a shiver down my spine. "I hope you're not too tired. I need you to come to my mansion tomorrow at 8 am. We have a lot of work to do "he said. Frowning, I sighed, feeling a sense of dread wash over me. "Yes, Mr. Blackwood. I'll be there." That was the only thing I said before ending the call. As I hung up the phone, I couldn't help but wonder what the next day would bring. I had a feeling that it was going to be a long and difficult road, but I was determined to see it through.
