The hospital always smelled the same at night. Disinfectant. Burnt coffee and exhaustion that clung to my skin even after I've washed my hands three times. I pulled my bag higher on my shoulder as I walked out of the emergency ward. My scrubs were stiff, my muscles aching in that familiar way I stopped complaining about a long time ago. If I complained, nothing changed. "Rossi." I stopped and turned. Dr. Hale was still at the nurses' station, pretending to read a chart and leaving all the work for us residents. "You're off?" He asked. "If nothing explodes in the next five minutes," I said to him with tilted head, earning Dr. Hale a tired half smile. "Go home."He tells me. "You look finished." Dr. Hale smiled mockingly. "I am finished," I replied, and kept walking before he could say anything else I didn't have the energy to respond. The staff corridor leading to the parking garage was always quieter, so I took it. Less noise. Fewer people. Less thinking. My phone vibrated in my pocket as I got to the parking lot, and I took it out, diverting my attention from my surroundings. No signal. "That's weird." I paused for a second. That was unusual here. And the lights were flickering. I switched my phone off and on anyway, even though I already knew it wouldn't change anything. Still, nothing. So I just put it away when I noticed something else. The silence. And not the normal hospital silence. Hospitals were never truly silent. All the months I've passed through here, there was always something...distant voices, footsteps somewhere that I couldn't see. But now... nothing. Even the air felt still, as if the building had forgotten how to breathe. My steps slowed without me deciding to, while my fingers tightened around my bag strap. Ahead of where I stood, I noticed a turn was blocked. I crooked my eyebrows as an eerie feeling crept upon me, with a sign that hung slightly crooked. AUTHORIZED PERSONNEL ONLY. I stared at it longer than I should, knowing I didn't remember it being there before, and maintenance didn't usually block this section. I should turn back. But I don't. I kept walking. "Go back Elena. Go back." I muttered to myself, yet my legs were even more curious than my brain was as to what was happening. The air changed before I even reached the corner where the sign stood. Metallic. Definitely not medical, but Something else. My stomach tightened slightly, even though I don't know the reason, but still, I turned the corner. And I stopped instantly. A man was kneeling in the middle of the dark, flickering passage. Hands behind his back, tied, head lowered. Something dark spread under him on the floor, but my brain refuses to name it at first. For a few seconds, I just stood there. Still. Then my body reacted before I could think. I stepped back. Another step back, until my heel scraped the floor too loudly, and someone turned toward me. Then another, then all of them, and I stopped breathing properly. I didn't move, and I should definitely run, but I didn't, because my body felt locked in place, like it stopped listening to me. At the far end of the passage, a door opened slowly, and a man walked out. I noticed him instantly, not because he was loud or doing anything obvious, but because everything else suddenly felt like it didn't matter compared to him. And when he stopped just inside the flickering light, looking directly at me, a huge gulp went down my throat while something in my stomach dropped instantly. What was going on? Was I...were they? I couldn't understand what was happening until one of the men there spoke, but I didn't register the words properly, for all my attention was on the man who walked through that door. His physique was strong to see in the moonlight, his jaw clenched and hardened, his eyes filled with a mystery that could span years, and his demeanor held with fear. His gaze didn't for once look at the men beside him, but kept them at me, and in that instant, I knew he was their Boss. My throat felt dry. "I didn't mean to come here," I said quickly. "I only took the wrong passage." I took a step back, yet none of them answered immediately, until he did. "No one takes this passage by accident." His voice was sharp, deep, and husky, even at its lowest, which gave me the creeps. I'm in deep s**t, aren't I? My fingers tighten led on my bag strap, whereas the stillness behind him shifts. The man on the floor made a broken, desperate sound. One that caught his attention, as within the blink of my eye, I watched him pull out a gun and shoot the man on the floor in the head. "Oh, my God!" I flinched before I could stop myself, seeing the pool of blood that enveloped the floor with a dead body. Oh my God. Oh my God. My body shivered, I began sweating and running a fever I had never had. And now, all their gaze was on me. I noticed his attention sharpened, and he took one step closer, now passing the body of the man he had just killed. "You saw everything." He said, and my chest tightened. "I didn't," I said fast. "I was just passing by. I didn't see anything." I stuttered as he started walking toward me, slow and controlled. I stopped talking immediately. My voice no longer felt safe, so I took one step back. Then another. "What's your name?" He asked as I took each step back; he came closer. "Elena," I feared. Then I added, too quickly, "Rossi." Shit. Something changed in his expression, but I couldn't read it. "I didn't see anything, I promise." Tears were now evident in my eyes. "You see...Elena..." My name dripped out of his lips as he caught up with me, standing right in my face. "I don't like liars." I regretted my words immediately. He tilted his head slightly. "Now I will have to decide what to do with you." My chest tightened painfully. "Please, I won't say anything, I promise. I swear," Fear gripped my heart. "I know." His response even made it worse. Not better. He shifted slightly as people behind him started moving. I didn't exactly understand what they were doing, but I understood enough. They were moving the body and cleaning the blood. My breathing turned uneven. This isn't chaos. This is control, and I am inside it. His gaze didn't shift from mine for once, even if mine did. "You shouldn't have seen this," He told me, and I couldn't tell if it was a warning or pity. "I won't tell anyone. I swear." Hot fluid strolled down my cheeks "I believe you." Oh, I knew it was a lie, and that only made matters worse. He stepped closer again, and I moved back immediately, until my back hit the wall. "What do you want from me?" I asked him, gripping my bag as though my life was in it. He didn't answer immediately, but looked at me, rather stared at me deeply. "You're going to come with me." "What? No...To...where?" I asked instantly, but his gaze eventually left mine, while he turned his back on me with his other men now closer to us. "Boss... should we erase her too?" One of them asked. Erase?...Earase who? Who are they erasing? "No. She's coming with me."
