Prologue
" I love you." I smiled and looked over at him. We laid there in silence for a while. "Goodnight sweetheart." We rolled over and tried to sleep. It is always comforting to be in his arms. It seemed to take forever for sleep to finally come to me. I dream of a strange man. He looks almost like a dark angel. The place is dark. I could hardly see any of my surroundings. He lights an oil lamp and sits up, stretching gingerly. Bones, as far as the eye can see. This place is not meant for the living. "what is he doing here?" I thought to myself. There is no way out that I can see. I wonder for a moment about this place. I've seen it before. I just cant think of where. He had stood up and started walking down a dark corridor and up into the light of the moon. There is nothing but forest surrounding this area. "What is this place?" I couldn't help but wonder to myself. And then, everything went dark. I woke up in a bed and I had no clue where I was. It's some kind of hospital. " Hello?" there is no way whoever brought me here could have left me alone. " Hello? Is anyone here?" Still no answer. So I decide to get out of bed. That was my first of many painful mistakes. I fell flat on my ass. I pulled myself up, sat on the bed and sighed. I couldn't believe my eyes when I looked out the window. " Is this for real?" I couldn't help but wonder. The town outside looked like a medieval fair. I tried to stand again but, my legs failed to cooperate. I stretched them out and worked slowly on moving them. That required all of my focus and effort. When I finally decided that i could get up and move around, I got out of bed and searched the room. " Surely there has to be some kind of paperwork or clue to where i am and how i got here." I was startled to hear my voice out loud. It sounded deafening against the silence. "Hello?" I was unsurprised to hear no response. I took a knife for my weapon and off i went to explore this oddity of a building. I tried to open the door but it was locked. "Of course it is, that would be just my luck." I told myself there was no use opening the door and decided to wait it out and see if someone would eventually come for me. I waited for what seemed to be like hours. I finally got tired of waiting and decided to break off the handle. I found something that resembled a hammer. " What would a hammer be doing in a hospital?" I thought to myself. It took me a long time to break the handle off of the door. I suddenly was out of breath. I mustered up the energy to walk around again and this time, I actually left the room. The hallway was dark. The building was seemingly abandoned. I spent what seemed like forever roaming the dark halls and finally found the exit. The raw sunlight was almost blinding. I wasn't wearing shoes, much less anything else. I blushed for a moment then realized how stupid a moment of embarassment was in a situation such as this. Did I even know that there was a situation? I had a feeling that whatever the situation was, it must be a grim one. I wandered through this little medieval ghost town and still, there was no one. I circled around many times and still, there was nothing. "did I die and end up in purgitory?" i asked my shadow. I kept seeing the triquetra everywhere I turned. There were huge gothic buildings everywhere I turned. Some of them were made of onyx, some of ivory, some of them were made out of marble that I couldn't identify. The road was made of white brick and the mortar wasn't white like normal, it was a dark green. There were silver and green fountains on every street. Every fountain had a statue of a different beautiful woman standing in its center. The water that flowed from them was of the purest color of blue I'd ever laid my eyes on. I was brought to a halt when I heard voices. "I don't care if you're in charge, I can't let you kill this man!" A feminine voice said. I crept around the corner to see a small townful of people standing around a huge statue of a beautiful woman. Around the statue was another fountain. This fountain was different than the others. It was silver and purple, while the water running inside of it wasn't any specific color. Though I could not see the man, I could feel a dark presence coming from what seemed to be a well. "Venus, he is a vampire and we cannot permit him to live among us! You know very well what his kind has done to us." she spat out with disgust. I could hear a groaning sound coming from the well. Everyone fell silent as I walked toward the statue. "WHO LET HER OUT?" the old hag was furious. I smiled up at all of them. Had they abducted me? "I let myself out fyi" she could be pissy, but so could I. "What is your name, child?" she looked at me like she knew what happened, but wasn't willing to share that information with anyone. "I am Danya, and I am a woman. Not a child." staring daggers in her direction, I added,"Don't harm him. Who are you to say this man is damned? Salvation can be found even in the souls that are seemingly too far gone." even though questioning this woman was probably not the smartest thing to do, I did it anyway. "I am Prudence, the crone of the coven and mayor of Phirias." So she was the judge, jury and executioner? not on my watch. I could already tell that I would not be getting along with this woman in any way, shape, or form. The well had a type of covering on it that seemed like mesh, though I wasn’t sure. I walked over to the well and peered down. The man from my dream! He was laying on the ground of the well and had smoke escaping from his skin, almost as if he were an ant under a magnifying glass. I felt an almost electric surge flowing through my body and, almost as if on cue, the guards of the town tried to grab me. Only when they did, they automatically let go. When I turned to look at them, their hands were smoking, almost exactly the way the man in the well was smoking. I turned my focus back on the man in the well. He was in a fetal position in the darkest part of the well. (Which wasn’t dark at all.) "let this man go." though the expression on her face was one of anger, I wouldn't falter under her stare. I stood there like a soldier trying to save a civilian, awaiting her response. When everything was silent, I could feel that electrical charge through me again. I couldn’t take my eyes off of him. I took a deep breath and jumped down into the well. The townspeople gasped at my actions. I landed much less graceful as I had hoped but, I landed just the same. As soon as I hit the bottom of the well, I rushed to his side. His skin was as hot as fire to the touch but, his words were as cold as ice. “You shouldn’t be down here, I could kill you in the blink of an eye.” His expression was tortured. Almost like a caged animal, he launched himself at me. Before I could process his movement, he had his hands on my neck. “This is a really great way to thank someone who is trying to help you.” I couldn’t help it. The charge surging through me was now taking over. As he tried to sink his teeth into me, I put the palms of my hands over his head and then something remarkable happened, his teeth retracted, and his skin stopped smoking. He flew back into the stone wall of the well so hard that the wall started to crumble. Everything went blurry and as everything came back into focus, we were outside of the well and in front of the fountain. "As you wish, child, but he is your responsibility. Remember that when he ruins you." her words were condemning. This woman definitely knows something i don't, and I'm determined to find out exactly what it is. "I want you to have this." something told me to give him the amethyst crystal around my neck. "Take my amethyst, it will insure your protection." he looked at me with a strange look. I knew that this wouldn't be the last i saw of any of them. "Take this as a warning Danya, never turn your back on him." the old hag was getting on my last nerve. “I don’t know how you did that, but you seem to have everyone’s attention.” He whispered in my ear. I was shaking. After what happened. I wasn’t surprised. “Very well then, you shall stay at the inn, The both of you.” I couldn’t even begin to process what had just happened, but I guess I’m glad it did. Whatever that was, it saved my life for the time being. "I am Adrian, and i am in debt to you." This man was strange. I'm not too sure about my opinion on him quite yet. I’m not even sure that Prudence wasn’t right about how dangerous he was, seeing as he did just almost kill me. "So Danya is your name then?" he stared in my eyes. it seemed he was staring straight into my soul. "Yes, I am Danya." l stared straight back. I was kind of afraid of this man, but I also felt safe in his presence.
