Chapter 1
Adaira’s POV
The door slammed open, nearly rattling off the hinges.
Luna Eden’s face was white as if she had seen a ghost.
“Alistair, that is Allen’s mate,” she whispered, her voice hoarse.
Alistair’s arm on my waist only tightened, our bare thighs sliding together beneath the bedsheets.
“So, what? I should thank him for being so stupid as to let go of her.”
I could barely hide my smirk as my mate, Allen, appeared in the doorway.
His eyes blazed with fury as he looked between us.
“You slept with my brother?!”
(FEW DAYS AGO)
“It has been three months, Allen. Why haven't I gone to meet your pack?”
It must have been my imagination but irritation flashed in Allen’s eyes. “I told you. I've been busy.”
“Meeting women from other packs?!” I spat without thinking.
His face twisted in anger. I took a step back towards him, my hand raised to touch his chest. “Sorry. I should not have said–”
“Yes,” he said coldly. “Alpha's daughters. The kind suited for me.”
I froze midstep, wondering if my ears were playing tricks on me. “Excuse me?”
Allen tore his eyes away from me. “I am trying to become the Alpha of my pack. The woman I mate matters.”
My chest heaved as I forced breaths into my lungs.
His eyes hardened. “You will not come between me and my plans. I will not mate a lone wolf.”
Did he mean…
“I, Allen Ronald Black, reject you, Adaira Evergreen, as my mate,” he spat.
My lips parted in a silent scream, my hand clutching my chest as pain exploded within. The picnic basket I had packed for us clattered to the ground.
“Allen, you…” A single tear slipped down my cheek.
There seemed to be a conflicted look on his face. “I…I will claim you. But I need to get rid of this stupid bond to mark my real Luna.”
Who was this man? Where was the mate I fell in love with at first sight?
His phone rang. When he saw the caller ID, the look in his eyes softened for a second.
“Hey,” he said in a gentle tone that he never used with me.
A woman's voice came through the speaker.
Coquettish. Calling him babe.
She asked him a question and he gave me an irritated look. “I just had to clean up something. I will be home for dinner.”
When the call dropped, he walked to me and tilted my chin up.
The desire in his eyes was a complete mockery of everything I had ever thought the mate bond was about.
As he walked past, he shoved me so hard that I stumbled and hit my head against the concrete wall. My vision blurred with tears, pain stinging in the back of my head.
Allen never looked back once.

A loud banging on the door of my house woke me up from sleep.
I sat up, clutching my head as stinging pain spread through my skull. Instantly, my memories from the day before rushed back in.
The banging on my door sounded again. I blinked away the tears pooling in my eyes before going to open the door.
“Good morning, are you Miss Evergreen?”
“Yes. Why?”
He raised a paper in front of me. “Your house is being repossessed as repayment for a loan from the bank.”
My face blanked.
The man kept talking like he was not spewing complete rubbish. “You have a week to vacate the premises or you will be forcefully removed by our–”
“Hold on!” I snapped. “What loan?”
Irritation flashed in his eyes at being interrupted. He pulled out a paper from his folder and handed it to me. “That is your name and signature, is it not?”
I scanned the papers and flipped to the back. It indeed was my name and signature on this paper but…
“I did not sign this document,” I argued. “Verification can be done. Millions of dollars were not moved into my account from any bank.”
The man’s eyes narrowed. “We verify these details at our bank–”
I tossed the papers back at him. “For f***s sake, if I borrowed that kind of money, would I still be living in this neighbourhood?”
The man exchanged a look with his co-worker.
Their eyes hardened as they turned to me. “If you refuse to vacate the premises, you will be charged with trespassing on private property.”
I crossed my arms in front of my chest. “I will not be forced out of a house I paid for with my money–”
“Who is Yvonne Smith?” the co-worker asked. “You have her as a co-signer on this property.”
Suddenly, it clicked.
“s**t,” I swore, pushing past the men and rushing out the door into my car.
“Please. Please. Please,” I chanted to every deity out there who could hear me.
Let what I am thinking not be real.
I pulled into the parking lot of my cafe and my heart crashed to the ground.
Red tape everywhere with public officials milling around the property.
Darting out of the car, I ran to them. “What are you doing?! Get away from my–”
I was held back by two men. “Who do you think you are?”
“Adaira Evergreen,” I said, fighting their grasp. “I own this cafe. You cannot take it without my permission!”
The official nearest to me rolled his eyes. “This property has been auctioned off and all documentation has been passed to the new owner.”
I stumbled backwards, catching myself on my car before I fell to the ground.
My house. My cafe. Everything my mother left to me gone.
“Yvonne,” I whispered, heading back to my car.
Yes, Yvonne. My best friend.
She was the only person who knew who had access to my documents.
I drove even faster, teetering just on the edge of the speed limit. I pulled into her apartment complex, heading up to her place on the second floor.
“Yvonne,” I called out, knocking loudly on her door. “Yvonne!”
The door cracked open and an unfamiliar woman poked their head out. “Who are you? Where is Yvonne?!”
“Yvonne?” Recognition flashed behind her eyes. “The woman who lived her before? She moved out a few months ago.”
Months? How could Yvonne move to a new house and not tell me for months?
“I know the address of her new place if you want,” she offered.
“Please,” I said, my voice cracking.
My desperation must have come off because she returned with a bottle of water alongside a strip of paper with Yvonne’s new place on it.
I read the address and chuckled. That neighborhood was somewhere I could not afford to live in, even if I sold myself.
When I pulled up to her building, I walked to the front door and was immediately stopped by security.
“I am looking for Yvonne Smith,” I explained, sounding much calmer than I felt.
The guards looked me over. “Miss Smith does not entertain–”
“I am Adaira Evergreen, her best friend,” I said, watching recognition flash in their eyes.
“Miss Evergreen,” they said. I was not sure how they knew me but they let me through regardless. “Miss Smith is on the top floor.”
The apartments in this building were already luxurious enough. But to live in the penthouse.
I thanked them and headed to the elevator. As it opened, soft music wafted through the door open at the end of the short hallway.
When I opened the door, all eyes turned to me.
I walked past them, my eyes fixed on Yvonne, who sat at the bar.
“You b***h,” I snarled, dragging her head back by her hair.
She cried out as she fell to the ground. When she saw me, her eyes widened. “Who are you? Why are you harassing me?”
“Security, get this woman out of here,” a voice said behind me.
My heart caught in my throat, my entire body frozen solid. No, there was no way it was him.
The back of my eyes burned with tears as Allen walked to Yvonne’s side and lifted her into his arms. It was only when he was about to walk by that he thought to spare me a glance.
“Adaira…”
I pointed to Yvonne, my voice hoarse. “Her? My best friend is who you rejected me for?!”
