Blake’s arm shot out from the open front door and fired off a round. Sean heard it wiz by, just over their heads. He returned fire just as Blake’s arm disappeared back inside the house. Blake’s head never broke the plane of the doorway. It was a blind shot. “Mr. Albano!” he yelled from inside. “Start the car!” Albano said nothing. The car sat still. Sean began to believe Albano was injured even worse than he’d thought. “Listen,” Sean said, keeping his voice low so that only Quammen could hear him. “We’re at a stalemate here, but it’s not going to last much longer. Blake knows that reinforcements are on the way. The clock’s ticking, but he’s not going to leave his boss behind. Albano can buy their way out of the country.
