Golden Girl
Athena woke up to the delicious aroma of her favorite cake wafting through the house. A soft smile formed on her face as she stretched, rolled out of bed, and rushed toward the kitchen, her heart light and full of weekend joy. The smell was unmistakable strawberry cake. Her mom’s specialty. She tiptoed up behind her mother and wrapped her arms around her in a warm hug. Mrs Caroline smiled, already expecting her. You’re awake, my queen. Go have a seat. I’ll serve you just like royalty. Athena chuckled and shook her head. Come on Mom. Don’t be such a drama queen. "I am a drama queen," her mother replied with a theatrical flourish, prompting both of them to burst into laughter. Weekends were sacred in their small cottage. Every Saturday morning meant fresh strawberry cake and warm moments shared between mother and daughter. They were closer than most. They had to be. It had just been the two of them since Athena’s father died in a plane crash three years ago on his way to a business trip. The loss had devastated them both, but with time they learned to cope, stepping in and out of the roles he left behind. They were each other’s world. As they enjoyed breakfast, a knock came at the door and in stepped Cynthia, Athena’s best friend, classmate and co-worker at the local café. Good morning Mrs Caroline. She greeted her, exchanging a quick high five with Athena. You’re welcome, my dear Mrs Caroline replied warmly. "You’re not even dressed yet," Athena Cynthia said, eyeing her in mock disapproval. We’ll be late. Athena glanced at the clock. There was still a whole hour before the café opened. Chill Miss Punctual She’s right sweetheart. Mrs Caroline added gently,"You should start getting ready". Don’t forget you’ve got a bit of walking to do. Athena rolled her eyes playfully. Alright, I’ll just finish this last piece. You know it can’t go to waste. Mrs Caroline turned to Cynthia. Have you had breakfast dear I can serve you some Cynthia shook her head with a smile. Thank you, but I already ate at home. Fifteen minutes later Athena emerged from her room dressed and ready for work. She kissed her mother goodbye on the cheek. Bye Mom Love you she called as she and Cynthia headed out. The two friends walked briskly through the familiar streets, chatting and laughing as they made their way to the café. The sun was already climbing in the sky, casting a soft golden glow on the town. The café came into view. A cozy little building with a wide window at the front and pastel-painted chairs that gave it a cheerful charm. A small chalkboard stood outside with the day’s specials written in bright colors. Once inside, they slipped on their aprons and clocked in. The place was already beginning to buzz with early customers, regulars who always came in for their morning coffee and a smile. Athena moved with ease through the small space, taking orders with a warm grin and refilling cups without being asked. She had become something of a favorite here. Her kindness made people feel at home. "Look who’s here," Mr Henry said as she approached his usual booth. The sunshine of this café. Athena laughed, "Good morning Mr Henry." The usual "You know it, young lady," he said with a smile. Meanwhile, Cynthia worked the counter wiping down trays and arranging the pastries for the display. A new face joined them today. A young guy in his early twenties with shaggy hair and nervous eyes "That’s Leo," the manager, Mr Frank said, nodding toward him. He’s starting today. Show him the ropes, will you girls? Athena nodded. Sure thing. Hi, I’m Athena and this is Cynthia. Welcome to the madness Leo gave a shy smile. Nice to meet you. Thanks for helping me out. They showed him how to use the espresso machine where the extra aprons were kept and how to handle takeout orders. He stumbled at first, dropping a tray and apologizing every two seconds, but Athena reassured him with gentle words and patient explanations. You’ll get the hang of it. She said everyone’s awkward on day one. As the morning turned to afternoon, the café grew busier. Athena darted from table to table, balancing plates, greeting customers by name and offering warm napkins when someone spilled their tea. She even took a minute to kneel beside a little girl who had dropped her cookie and offered her a new one in the house. "You’re such a sweetheart," the girl’s mother said, "Thank you for being so kind." Athena’s smile didn’t falter. Not at all ma’am. It’s nothing During the lunch break, she stepped into the back to call her mother Hi Mom, it’s time for your meds. Have you taken them yet? After confirming her mom had done so, she ended the call with a soft smile. From behind her, Cynthia raised an eyebrow. You don’t have to call her every lunch break. You know she’s not a child. Athena turned grinning. She’s my baby and I enjoy doing this. The rest of the day passed in a flurry of activity. The scent of cinnamon rolls and roasted beans filled the air. The sounds of laughter, coffee grinders and soft jazz created a rhythm Athena had grown to love. It wasn’t glamorous but it was hers. Before closing, Leo approached her again. Hey, thanks for being so nice today. I was really nervous. "You did well, Leo, "she said," Keep going." It gets easier with every shift. The café finally emptied as the sun dipped below the rooftops. Athena and Cynthia took off their aprons exhausted but smiling. Another day done. Cynthia stretched dramatically. My feet are crying Let them cry. Athena teased. "That’s the sound of honest work". They stepped outside into the cooling evening air. Ready to head home, Athena glanced back at the café and felt a quiet pride settle in her chest. This was her little world. A peaceful, predictable world She didn’t know that very soon everything would change.
