The Wrong Move
Bridget stood in the bathroom mirror fighting back tears. She stared at herself, Her long black hair hung loose to her waist and her coal black eyes looked defeated. She tried to force a smile across her thin lips but it appeared more as a grimace.
She didn't want to move. It felt all wrong to leave her beautiful apartment in the city and move to a trailer in the country.
She tried hard to remind herself that financially it made sense as it would be much cheaper and maybe it would help to take the bad influence of the "city kids" away from her children.
Begrudgingly, she returned to the living room and continued to pack the apartment up. With each new box she packed she felt more sick. As she taped the last box together her husband walked in the front door. "Hey baby, you ready to get this show on the road? If we dont start moving things now we won't be done by midnight."
She closed her eyes and sighed heavily, then stared at her husband. She studied his face, his dark deep set, bedroom eyes. His slender yet muscular build. The long beard she loved so much. The simplicity of his old stained t-shirt and ripped up blue jeans, his baseball cap that held back his shoulder length hair. The sight of him always gave her butterflies, she knew as long as he was with her she would be fine.
She stood from the floor and pushed the box away with her foot. "Yeah Dallas, I'm as ready as I'll ever be I guess. Lets do this."
They loaded the moving truck with all their belongings. When they finished she walked into her daughter's now empty room. "Lila, Braxton. Its time to head out. Let's go see the new house." The kids screamed excitedly and ran to her car. She walked to the moving truck and Dallas rolled down the window, "I will follow you, please take it easy and dont break any of my stuff!" he smiled at her and laughed, "you know I will be careful. We can't afford to have to replace all of this. Just stay behind me and I will see you when we get there ok baby? Its gonna be fine. You'll see." She nodded and leaned in for a quick kiss. "Love you. See you when we get there." She turned to walk away and he yelled behind her, "Love you, be careful!"
She climbed in her car and turned it on. The cool air from the vents brought her a little peace. She glanced into the backseat and made sure her kids were buckled in, "alright guys, you ready?" Both kids exclaimed "Yes!!!" as she pulled out on the road following Dallas out of her beloved neighborhood and in to her worst nightmare.
