Chapter 5

Lucifer Laurens I was at the doctors for some time. He seemed sketchy but I can't complain. He had this Italian accent and kept talking on the phone to this guy name Tony, not to be confused with Tony King... I think. I was released and Mr. Michaels excused me from class. It was decided I would work from home and Mr. Verano will bring me the schoolwork. Speak of which no one has heard from him over the past few hours. He fell off the Earth. Since this was just such an educational day, I also learned McLennan attends the same school. He slipped into the body business when he was fourteen. I stopped at a red light. North. I moved everything North; the only thing left was Frank, but he's gone too. I looked at the younger boy. Red hair, dull green eyes. Gingers. "What?" He asked as he moved the hair in his face out of the way. He reminded me of myself. Doing anything for the money, living check by check, and still being abused. His hair was all messed up, he wore a jacket he found in the back of the car which was probably mine. I could afford second-hand clothes, or maybe it was Will's. He wasn't any better than me at cleaning the car. I glanced at the scar on the kid's face and the band-aid only made me feel guilty. "You want anything to eat? Maybe from the five-and-dime, it's near my place" I offered. He nodded slowly. "I mean if you're sure," He said. I drove to the five-and-dime and parked close. McLennan handed me my crutches and we go inside. The low-lit aisles were covered in snacks and the coolers filled with drinks. We grab some crisps and candies. "I meant to ask you something, it slipped my mind-" I go over how uncomfortable he was as a few people stared. I limp over, f**k whatever dignity I had.-"I'm thinking of grabbing that bacon soda to dip my chicken wings in," I said loudly. They shifted their stare at me, fully concerned. McLennan burst out laughing at my terrible choices. He helped grab my things and we go to the counter. The lady stared at me as she scanned our items slowly. What's up with all the staring problems? "Can I help you doll?" I said annoyed. She averted her eyes. I knew I look shitty but is it that bad? "Sorry. Your total is £18.53," she whispered. I grabbed my wallet and take the needed currency out. "It's the hair, isn't it?" I said to the elderly woman. I turned to McLennan. "McLennan is it because I'm ugly?" I pouted. He giggled and shook his head. "No I think she's jealous of your hair," he said. I gave her the money and she gave me my change. "Uh-" she stuttered, I waved her off. It's not a big deal. We leave and the people once staring at him had all eyes on me from beginning to the end. I get in the car, the crutches tossed into the back seat. "Seriously though open the soda, I wanna know if it tastes good," I said starting the car. My house is not too far and Will should be home. Unless he's getting milk for three days again. In a short time, I pulled up in the driveway and find a pissed-off Will and confused Greg. I parked and get out. "You're picking up stray kids now," he sassed. I purse my lips, limping trying to balance myself. "At least I don't leave to get milk for five days," I said back and toss Will some crisp he loved. He caught it but doesn't give a damn. Not a tiny bit of gratefulness. "Get your a*s inside. Someone is here for you," he said upset. To anyone, he would look fine but I knew from the storm in his blue eyes. His normal black curly hair was a mess and sticking in all directions. Wonder what happened now. "At least I grabbed milk!" I said grabbing the bag and bottle of milk. "You're sleeping on the couch tonight!" I heard him yell as he aggressively opened the door. "I'm injured!" I yelled. I glance to see a pale McLennan. I forgot he was here. I see him smooth out the shirt I let him borrow. I forgot Moxxi's striper pic was on there. What the f**k fourteen-year-old me? "You sure I can stay here for the night?" McLennan asked scratching his arm. I nodded and noticed him eating the chicken already. "Yeah he's being dramatic," I said grabbing my crutches and grabbing my things. Once McLennan was out and shut the door, I locked the car and go inside to see Jace relaxing in my sleeping area for tonight. "Excuse me but this isn't school hours?" I said putting the bag of snacks on the counter. I grab the soda and open it. Honey glazed Bacon, this could be the best or worse thing I could have tasted. I took a sip before I spat it out. "That's vile," I said taking another sip and gagging. "Rancid," I slammed it on the table. I stuck my tongue out, that was terrible. "No one from that group should bother you. I made sure of it. Head to the safe house anyway though. Take McLennan with you. I'm gonna crash here for the night," he said stretching on my couch. Of course, because who needed to ask me for anything? "The f**k?" I mumbled and look over to see Greg watching TV. "Why are you here?" I asked the two. I sat on a chair and began digging into the snacks. "I'm tired, alright? I haven't killed someone since f*****g '23," he slurred. I rolled my eyes. The urge to scrub my skin raw was there, the urge to puke or cry was strong. I picked up a piece of chicken and took a bite. Greg doesn't provide an answer and it didn't look like he was planning on doing so soon. "I'm too tired for this," I put my leg up. Pain in the a*s. Or well half-a*s. McLennan was shown his room by Will. Will continued to give me the silent treatment and now the door is being abused. "I got it," Greg said as he turned off the tv and answered the door. I drop my piece of chicken. "Damn," I whispered checking out the person at the door. I see the younger one from Kessler. Same hair. The boy has a bandaid on the bridge of his nose, his shirt stained and his hair longer than how most men wore it. I look on but Will came and hit me on the head. "I am injured, damn it!" I screeched. I look at Greg-f**k-ory talking to the teen at the doorstep. "And I'm hungover, shut up," Mr Verano snapped. He was taking up the whole couch, I wonder how he got the fresh clothes. I doubt you could walk the street covered in someone else's blood. "What happen to your other-" I started but he just raised a finger. "Burned it," he does a finger g*n before trying to sleep. "Safehouse better have milk," I mumbled as I see the empty bottle on the counter. His dumbass told me a week ago he was gonna get milk and he lied. I had to buy it and he dares to drink it in front of me. I notice Greg still hasn't let him in. Instead, they were arguing, letting the AC unit run. What a waste of energy! "I imagine it does," McLennan said enjoying the warm food. "So you gonna let him in?" I finally snapped. Greg did, though annoyed with me. "You're the guy from the radio, aren't you? The rogue? The delinquent? The dude who snitched on-" Greg slapped his hand over the brunet beauty's mouth. I propped my chin onto my hand, elbow on the table. "Sweetheart, kindly shut up. I've had a hell of a day. So on that note, good night everybody. Verano get your disgusting self off my couch and in a tub!" I hissed. He flipped me off as I got on my crutches. Struggling to balance as I took my box of sweets and chicken downstairs to my room. Better known as the basement.
