Chapter 1
Patrick was with his friend Jessie, they walked to Patrick’s little sister’s school. Patrick had brown hair with brown eyes, fairly pale skin and he didn’t have a bad appearance.
Currently, he was 13. His best friend Jessie had blonde hair with hints of black on the tips of his hair. He had green eyes and was a little taller than Patrick. They always hung out together. Jessie was also 13, their birthday was a few days apart. But Patrick’s little sister Laura was 10. Her 11th birthday was just two weeks away.
Usually for the most of the time, Laura was just 2 years younger than Jessie. Laura had brown hair like Patrick and brown eyes as well. But she was adorable with some freckles on her cheek. The boys school finished nearly 30 minutes before Laura’s school. So, they always ran to her school.
Her school was down the road but not too much further down. They stood at the gate throwing a basketball at each other while waiting. That was until they heard running footsteps echoing inside the gate and a sound of giggles. The PA system went off.
“DAWN RIVERS, LAURA BRIDGE PLEASE RETURN TO CLASS UNTIL THE BELL. DAWN RIVERS, LAURA BRIDGE PLEASE RETURN TO CLASS UNTIL THE BELL.”
“Oh s**t, sounds like someone’s grounded.” Jessie said.
Patrick and Jessie laughed.
They saw shadows through the windows running and they watched curiously. Two girls started running down the steps from the upper visual balcony. They watched with curiosity, they saw a teacher chasing them as they laughed. Laura and Dawn looked at the teacher for a second. They hugged and Laura ran down the stairs with her backpack. Dawn sat on the railing of the steps.
“DAWN! YOU ARE IN SERIOUS TROUBLE! GET OFF THE RAILING!” Mrs Williams screamed.
“HEY MRS WILLIAMS! FANCY SEEING YOU HERE! WHAT’S UP?” Dawn screamed.
The boys saw the teacher getting closer and Dawn waving before leaning back to roll off the railing. Dawn landed on her feet and grabbed Laura’s hand as they ran giggling. Jessie and Patrick watched them running.
The PA made the same announcement as they ran across the school field to dodge the teacher which is now getting assistance from a sports teacher as well. They ran to the school fence and Dawn lifted Laura over. Patrick and Jessie ran to the fence as Dawn ran backwards and did a run up on a pole for the extra boost. They didn’t take their eyes off of Dawn as they watched her curiously. All they could see was long black hair in a braid that had plenty of strands loose as she jumped from the fence. They saw her wave at the teachers as they walked across the road to leave school early.
“LAURA!” Patrick shouted.
Laura froze looking scared at Dawn.
“Who’s that, do I kick their ass?” Dawn asked.
“That’s my brother.” Laura said.
She looked scared.
“So yes or no on the ass kicking?” Dawn asked.
“He is too tough. I think we just wait.” Laura said.
Dawn nodded.
Dawn turned around as she heard footsteps getting closer. They stopped to look at her. Dawn looked up from the ground slowly, her blue eyes staring at them. She looked so innocent and sweet. Patrick was mesmerised by her looks. Jessie felt his heart racing in his chest.
“Why are you out early?” Patrick asked.
He approached Laura but Dawn pushed him back.
“Don’t touch my best friend!” Dawn shouted.
Jessie and Patrick looked shocked.
“Listen to her Patrick, she’s a fighter.” Laura said softly.
Dawn saw them take a step back and she looked at Laura.
“Are you okay?” Dawn asked.
The boys looked at each other confused. Picking up on the concerning vibe Dawn gave out. They stared at Laura.
“What happened?” Jessie asked.
“I don’t want to talk about it.” Laura said.
Patrick and Jessie saw Laura was about to cry. Dawn noticed it and wrapped her arms around Laura. Laura embraced the hug and sighed. She looked at Patrick, her eyes full of water.
“Laura, what happened? How can we help if we don’t know?” Patrick asked.
“Tell them.” Dawn said softly.
Laura shook her head.
“They need to know so they can look after you during the holidays.” Dawn said.
Laura looked at Dawn and nodded.
“Dawn and I spend lunch together. She spilt her milk on her jacket and rinsed it off in the bathroom. But while she was gone these bigger kids picked on me and kept pushing me. We have been running all afternoon until most of them got distracted and we decided to leave the school. Dawn caused a distracted for us to leave.” Laura cried.
“What kids bullied you?” Patrick asked.
“Laura wouldn’t say who. Otherwise we’d be having a whole different conversation.” Dawn said.
“Hello Dawn, I’m Jessie. I’m Patrick’s friend.” Jessie said.
“Hello. So, I’m guessing you’re the Patrick and Jessie that Laura complains about.” Dawn said.
Laura laughed as she wiped her eyes.
“Complains?” Patrick and Jessie asked at the same time.
“She’s joking.” Laura laughed.
“Partly.” Dawn said.
“How long have you known each other?” Patrick asked.
“Dawn started school recently. We’ve hung out every day. I was jealous and avoided her.” Laura confessed.
“Why were you jealous?” Jessie asked.
“All the boys kept trying to ask her to be their girlfriend. And as soon as Lucas and Scott spoke to Dawn, all the girls tried to be her friend. But for some reason she spoke to me instead of them and has been sitting with me every lunch.” Laura said.
“You’re both being harassed by boys?” Patrick asked.
