Chapter 22

“She’s the charge of Tate’s that we gathered her things for?” The sergeant asked. “Yes, she’s been with us since. She still gets check-ups from Tate regularly to make sure she’s okay. She has his number to contact him if needed and she has monthly doctor check-ups to confirm she doesn’t try to kill herself again.” Mark said. Derek was shocked as he listened. “That was sad, I heard what happened. My sympathy goes with her. To find her parents that way. To hear what she heard. I was there after they removed the child. It was really brutal. I didn’t know if she would ever get over it.” The sergeant said. “She coped with chocolate and strawberry milk. She exercises when she has emotions. She considers herself weak if she cried in front of someone. It’s a slow progress but there has been progress.” Mark said. “That’s the main thing.” The sergeant said. Officer Rio pushed Dawn and she fell with a groan. The sergeant punched officer Rio in the face. “I said be careful with her. You’re on probation.” The sergeant snapped. The sergeant uncuffed Dawn and helped her up carefully. “Sorry for what you have been through Dawn. It was clearly self-defence. All we can recommend is that you see someone to talk to if it troubles you.” The sergeant said. Dawn nodded while looking down. “Dawn, how about we get you kids home?” Mark asked. “I need to stay today. I have a book report due.” Dawn said. “I think we can explain that you can do it in a couple days. You deserved a few days off. Laura and Patrick will be home as well.” Mark said. Dawn nodded. “Let’s go get them.” Mark said. Dawn walked towards him as she rubbed her wrists. “Mark, her wrists.” Derek said. Mark looked down. “He cuffed her too tight, it cut her wrists.” Mark said. He was very angry. The sergeant looked at officer Rio. “You are close to being fired. Respect others Rio.” The sergeant said. Mark walked away. Everyone looked at her shocked as she walked in with her cheerleading outfit that had blood on it. Mark gestured to Patrick and Laura. They ran over. “Get her stuff, we are going to go home for a few days.” Mark said. They nodded. Patrick ran to get her book while Laura grabbed her bag. They walked back quickly and walked out. Laura wrapped her arm around Dawn as they walked away. Dawn watched as she got closer to Mark’s car. She saw everyone’s reflection in the window. The people behind them including Jessie were watching her. Mark opened her door and helped her in. He walked around to the back and put their bags in as Laura climbed into the car with Patrick. They watched Mark drive away. Dawn looked at the floor as they drove. “You okay, Dawn?” Mark asked. “Yes.” Dawn whispered. “If you ever want to talk about it, I am here.” Mark said. “Thank you.” Dawn said softly. They drove home for Dawn to shower and to clean her uniform. A few months later, it was Dawn’s birthday. She turns 15 and she was excited. Dawn woke up and stayed in bed. It was early Saturday morning. Hawkeye was in her bed next to her. She already was starting to look like a young woman with her body developing a big bust. Her curves getting lots of attention. “Happy birthday to me Hawkeye.” Dawn said softly. Hawkeye screeched. The sound of running was coming and she pretended to be asleep. She was wearing a small pyjama bottoms and a pyjama singlet set. She threw the covers over herself. Dawn pretended to be asleep. Her door burst open. “I know you’re awake, that damn bird screeches when your awake.” Jessie said. Dawn smiled and tried to not laugh. Hawkeye stuck his head out the sheet and looked at Jessie. “Yes, I was on about you Hawkeye.” Jessie said. Laura giggled when she saw Hawkeye open its eyes wider pretending to be shocked. Mark was at the door with them as well. “Dawn, come on. We have a surprise planned for you.” Mark said. Dawn pretended to snore and Laura laughed. “Pull the covers.” Laura said. Jessie grabbed the bottom and pulled. Dawn gripped it tight and it dragged her with it. They laughed. “Come on rise and shine.” Mark said. “5 more minutes.” Dawn mumbled. Jessie was still pulling her out of bed. “No, you always add more time every time. This is one of the days I am going to say no.” Mark said. “Pretty please.” Dawn mumbled. Her frame was off the bed. Jessie let go. Her body dropped to the floor and she laughed. She crawled under her bed. “Quick she’s buckling down. Get her.” Mark joked. Jessie and Patrick crawled around the edges of the bed and kept tickling her until she submitted. “OKAY! YOU WIN!” Dawn squealed. Jessie walked to the feet of her bed and pulled her feet out. Not long after, she was fully out from under the bed. They laughed at her messy hair when Jessie let go of her feet.
