“Dawn, we are going to change your pants now, okay? You need smaller ones on.” Jessie said. Dawn nodded slowly. Jessie gently leaned her back as Patrick grabbed a small pair of grey pants from her wardrobe. He handed them to Jessie. Dawn looked at Jessie, watching him closely. Jessie carefully grabbed the brim of her pants and lowered her pants. A lot of voices were heard from downstairs. Dawn kept her gaze on Jessie. Jessie was careful over the marks on her legs. Once he was clear of that, he pulled the rest of her pants of easily. Jessie then slowly put her feet in the smaller pants. Jessie slowly raised it to her knees. He looked at Dawn as he watched her face to see when it would hurt. These were going to hurt going past her marks, her scrapes and cuts. Jessie saw her flinch and start crying quietly. He got to her hips and stood up to lift her slightly to put them on properly over her butt. “It’s all done now. You did good.” Jessie said. Dawn nodded. She wanted to stand up but Jessie wouldn’t let her. He picked her up and laid her on the bed. “Can you get a bucket, a bottle, and some more cushions to support her. If she’s propped up, there’s less chance of choking on her blood.” Jessie said. Dawn grabbed his hand and squeezed. “It’s okay Sunshine. I won’t leave your side.” Jessie said. Dawn nodded. Patrick left the room. He left the door open. “HEY! How is she?” Derek asked. Patrick gestured them to shh. “Dad, help me bring as many spare pillows and cushions to prop her up. I need to get her a water and a bucket.” Patrick said. “We can help.” Scott said. Patrick nodded. They grabbed cushions from the cupboards and started bringing them into the room. Jessie was sitting next to her and holding her hand. Jessie was having his hand held and squeezed hard. His knuckled were white. “Where would you like the pillows?” Mark asked. “We need to prop her up so she doesn’t choke on blood when it bleeds again.” Jessie said. “Ouch, sounds bad.” Scott said. Jessie tried to move his hand. Dawn didn’t want to let go. “Dawn, I need to put the cushions and pillows behind you. You can hold me again afterwards.” Jessie said. Dawn slowly shook her head. “Sit up and hold me while I do this then. But I need to do this. You’re not dying on me again.” Jessie said. Dawn slowly sat up. Mark noticed how slow she was being. “She really is slow right now.” Mark said. “She died for a while, if Wendy wasn’t there, they would have given up.” Jessie said. “Wendy?” Mark asked. “The female paramedic that calls Dawn darling and sweetie.” Jessie said. “Oh, I didn’t know her name.” Mark said. “Dawn made her laugh a lot though.” Jessie said. “I believe that.” Scott said. Scott handed the cushions up from the floor as Jessie stacked them. “Try leaning back Dawn.” Jessie said. Dawn nodded slowly and leaned back slowly. She slowly turned her eyes to look at Jessie again and reach for his hand. Jessie climbed over her feet to sit on the other side so Mark could sit down. Dawn held Jessie’s hand tight. “What did she say to Wendy?” Scott asked. “She said to a paramedic, she didn’t want to go in the whee whoo.” Jessie said. Jessie help back his laughter. “What’s a whee whoo?” Lucas asked. “Dawn calls an ambulance a whee whoo. Her logic is because it makes that sound, it’s a whee whoo.” Jessie laughed. They laughed as Tate walked in. “Dawn, I know you can’t talk right now. But are you okay?” Tate asked. Dawn slowly turned her head to face Tate. Dawn nodded. “She responds a bit quicker with eye contact. Wendy will take her back in a few days if it’s still bad and run more tests. But everything came back clear so far.” Jessie said. “What if it’s shock?” Scott asked. “I never considered it.” Jessie said. Patrick carried a few bottles of water and a bucket into the room. Jessie opened a bottle and handed it to Dawn. She slowly went to drink. “We might need a straw for miss dribble.” Jessie joked. Dawn frowned at him. Patrick grabbed a straw and came back. “Dawn, would you like all of us to leave and let you rest?” Mark asked. Dawn shook her head slowly. She tried pulling Jessie down to her. Patrick came in. “Dawn doesn’t want Jessie to leave her side. She wouldn’t let him grab any cushions or her water. It’s like a safety response. He makes her feel safe.” Patrick said. Mark nodded. “What caused her to die?” Mark asked. Everyone looked at Jessie and Patrick as Patrick put the straw in her drink. “She was talking and her tone changed.” Jessie started explaining. His voice was breaking. “As she was talking her heart just started rising. She fell backwards and was dead. Wendy and the others did CPR then when she was finally revived, she was red and vomited. Wendy saw blood on her lips. A piece of plastic from the seatbelt was stuck in her throat. Wendy pulled it out and told her to gargle and spit when she tastes blood which is why we needed a bucket. The piece was what caused it, Wendy thinks.” Jessie said softly. Dawn kept looking at him and squeezing his hand. He laughed as he looked at his hand. “You will break my hand if you keep squeezing me.” Jessie said.
