“I will never speak to a reporter. The lies and deception they post.” Dawn said.
“Not all are like that.” He claimed.
“You can leave now. I just want to go to school and live my life.” Dawn said.
Scott and Lucas reached them. Lucas pushed the reporter hard.
“Stay away from Dawn. Someone is trying to kill her, so no one goes near her except family and close friends.” Scott said aggressively.
“Guys, shut up. He’s a reporter and you just gave him a story.” Dawn said.
They froze.
“Look, if you want a story, wait until I graduate. No one knows I am here and I want to keep it that way. I am under a lot of fear and rarely sleeping. I have a busy schedule to distract myself. If you want a real story. Then let me do school first. At least until the first year is over.” Dawn said.
The reporter nodded after getting up off the floor again.
“Sorry for tackling you.” Dawn said.
“Sorry for pushing you.” Lucas said.
“I would have done the same given the circumstances. All I will say is that the lovely Dawn Rivers has started college nearby and is radiating in her cheer uniform. We will add a pole to see if anyone wants to see photos and interviews.” The reporter said.
They nodded then walked away from him. Dawn put her arms around Lucas and Scott.
“You two are so cute for being protective.” Dawn said.
“You had us worried when you disappeared.” Scott said.
“I thought it was an attempt. I ran because if I stayed still, I might have been a goner.” Dawn said.
“We get that.” Lucas said.
They hugged each other, then Dawn had gently pushed Scott and ran.
“You’re it.” Dawn laughed.
She ran around the field with Scott chasing her, he tagged Lucas and Lucas tagged her. She ran after Scott and tagged him and he ran back after Lucas and Dawn. He reached Dawn and picked her up to spin her around. Dawn laughed so loud that everyone was hearing it. She was on the ground and they were tickling her, making her laugh so loud.
“No more, I yield!” She laughed.
They let go. Dawn got up and dusted herself off. She tagged them and ran to the science building. Dawn ran up the wall on an angle and laughed as she jumped onto the lights outside the building.
“See, she is exceptional.” Coach Jansen said.
“How did she do that?” Kai asked.
“Shh coach, let him learn one day. Don’t spoil the fun.” Crystal said.
“True, it’s more fun this way.” Coach Jansen said.
Kai shook his head. He watched Dawn spinning around the light and laughing. She let go and flipped until she landed. Scott picked her up and swung her onto his back to walk away. Lucas walked back for their things.
“Dawn will be back next practice. Scott wants to make sure she changes for work before we study so she can go to work.” Lucas said.
“No worries, Lucas. Thank you for letting us know.” Crystal said.
“I have to go anyway. Thank you for the insightful conversation, Coach Jansen. I will see you at tryouts. I need to pick up some books from the library soon.” Kai said.
Coach Jansen nodded and shook his hand again, Lucas heard but tried to ignore it. He ran after Scott and Dawn.
They entered the dorms and Dawn changed in their room. She put her work uniform on without the apron that had her work name and her name. She kept her apron rolled up as she went to the library with the boys.
“Guys, Kai said he had to come here.” Lucas said.
“It’s fine. Look he’s going to attend school, it’s fine that he will be here often. I think it would be great just to make a new friend. I miss everyone. They grew up and we all separated.” Dawn said.
“We’re here.” Scott said.
“I know.” Dawn said.
Dawn walked to the vending machine and paid for a few bags of snacks. They got some drinks and sat on the three couches. They opened their drinks. If they got it right, they chose a snack as a reward. If wrong, they had to be given one which they clearly didn’t enjoy.
“So, who’s reading one of mine for me?” Dawn asked.
“I will.” Scott said.
“I will read Lucas’s ones then and Lucas can read yours Scott. Now remember, if we get the answer wrong, we have to eat the readers pick.” Dawn said.
They nodded and laughed. Kai walked in and grabbed some books. He noticed Dawn as she smiled to her friends.
“So, who is first?” Dawn asked.
“Me.” Lucas said.
“Okay, what is the electronic configuration for potassium?” Dawn asked.
Lucas froze for a moment.
“[AR] 4s1?” Lucas asked.
“Lucky bugger.” Dawn said.
“Marsh me.” Lucas said.
Dawn picked up a marshmallow and threw it at Lucas. He caught it in his mouth.
“Scott, your turn.” Lucas said.
“Bring it on.” Scott said.
“How do electric fields interact?” Lucas asked.
“Oh easy, when charged particles are close enough to exert force on each other, their electric fields interact.” Scott said.
“Nerd.” Lucas said.
“Chocolate me.” Scott said.
Lucas chucked a small piece of chocolate at Scott and he caught it in his mouth.
“Haha, now it’s your turn. Let’s look for the hard ones.” Scott said.
He looked at Dawn. Kai raised his eyebrow in confusion. Kai watched with curiosity at the same time. This was a very unusual study method.
“What chemical removes oxygen from water and how long does it take?” Scott asked.
“Oh what? Dawn hasn’t read that yet.” Lucas said.
“I know.” Scott said.
He laughed as he looked at Dawn.
“Come on, what is it?” Scott asked.
Dawn was thinking hard for a moment.
Kai looked at Dawn’s expression as her face scrunched.
“Nitrogen purging. The time I am not sure of. Maybe 10 minutes.” Dawn said.
“Wrong. Whoo! It’s between 20 to 40 minutes.” Scott cheered.
“Alright, what am I having?” Dawn asked.
“You have to drink all of our drinks quickly.” Scott teased.
“That will cause me to burp. I burp loud.” Dawn said.
“I know, I am counting on it.” Scott laughed.
“Oh, come on.” Dawn said.
“Oh Lucas, she’s ignoring her masters.” Scott teased.
Kai raised his eyebrow as he heard ‘her masters’.
“Dawn, you have to obey our orders.” Lucas said.
Dawn sighed and stood up. She bent over the table to reach every drink and bring it closer to her.
