Chapter 12 – The Breaking Point
The scandal grew worse with every passing day.
News outlets continued to publish stories about Ethan and Amelia. Reporters waited outside Blackwood Technologies, hoping to catch another photograph of them together.
Inside the company, the atmosphere became tense.
Some employees still supported Amelia.
Others avoided her completely.
Every whisper she heard felt like another accusation.
One afternoon, the board of directors held an emergency meeting.
"The company's biggest investors are concerned," one director said.
"They believe the relationship has created a conflict of interest."
Another director added, "If this continues, we could lose important contracts."
Ethan stood.
"My personal relationship has never influenced my business decisions. Amelia earned her position through hard work."
Mark Reynolds leaned forward.
"Perhaps. But public perception matters."
Several board members nodded.
They decided to launch an internal investigation while asking Ethan and Amelia to keep their distance in the office.
That evening, Amelia sat alone in her apartment, reading the latest headlines.
Her phone rang.
It was her mother.
"Amelia, are you alright? I saw the news."
"I'm okay, Mum," she replied, trying to sound strong.
"Whatever happens, remember who you are. People can spread lies, but the truth doesn't change."
After the call ended, Amelia stared out the window.
She loved Ethan.
But she also loved the career she had worked so hard to build.
She didn't want to be the reason his company suffered.
The next morning, Ethan found a sealed envelope on his desk.
Inside was a resignation letter.
He immediately rushed to Amelia's office.
"Tell me this isn't real."
Amelia looked at him with tears in her eyes.
"It has to be."
"No."
"I'm hurting your company, Ethan."
"You're not."
"I am."
She took a deep breath.
"If leaving is the only way to protect everything you've built... then it's the choice I have to make."
Ethan reached for her hand.
"Please don't do this."
She gently let go.
"I love you."
The words hung in the air.
"And because I love you... I'm walking away."
Before Ethan could stop her, Amelia picked up her bag and walked toward the elevator.
The doors closed.
Ethan stood frozen, watching the woman he loved disappear.
For the first time in years, he felt completely helpless.
Far away, Mark Reynolds received a message from a security contact.
"She's gone."
He smiled.
"Everything is falling into place."
But neither Mark nor Victoria knew that someone else had quietly uncovered a crucial piece of evidence—evidence that could expose the real mastermind behind the scandal.
