Chapter 2

436 Words
Chapter 2 – The Ice-Cold Boss Amelia's first week at Blackwood Technologies was nothing like she had imagined. She had expected a demanding boss. She had not expected perfection. Every morning, Ethan Blackwood arrived at exactly 7:30 a.m. His schedule was planned to the minute, and he expected everyone around him to be just as disciplined. On Amelia's second day, she carefully organized his meetings, prepared his documents, and placed a cup of black coffee on his desk. Ethan glanced at the files. "You've arranged these in the wrong order." Amelia frowned. "I'm sorry, sir. I followed the agenda from yesterday." "I changed it last night." "I... I didn't receive the updated email." "You should have checked." His calm voice stung more than if he had shouted. "I'll correct it immediately." He simply nodded and returned to his work. Later that afternoon, Amelia rushed into the conference room with printed reports for an important client meeting. She handed them to Ethan. He flipped through the pages. "These figures are outdated." Amelia's heart skipped. "I used the report from the finance department." "Always verify the latest version before printing." The room fell silent. Amelia felt every pair of eyes on her. "I'm sorry." Ethan closed the file. "Apologies don't solve problems. Accuracy does." The meeting continued, but Amelia struggled to focus. During lunch, she sat alone in the staff cafeteria. "I think I'm going to lose this job," she sighed. Her new colleague, Sophie Bennett, smiled warmly. "Don't worry. Mr. Blackwood treats everyone like that." "Really?" "He isn't cruel. He just expects excellence." Amelia looked down at her lunch. "I just wish he'd notice how hard I'm trying." "He will," Sophie replied. "You just have to survive long enough." The next morning, Amelia arrived an hour early. She checked every email, every document, every meeting schedule twice. When Ethan entered his office, everything was already prepared. He noticed immediately. "You came early." "Yes, sir." "Good." That single word was the closest thing to praise she had received all week. It wasn't much. But it gave her hope. As Ethan walked into his office, he paused for a moment. For the first time, he wondered if Amelia Carter might be different from the assistants who had quit before her. And Amelia silently promised herself one thing— She would not give up, no matter how difficult Ethan Blackwood made her job. End of Chapter 2 Next: Chapter 3 – Unexpected Kindness. A major business meeting takes an unexpected turn, and Amelia gets the chance to prove herself in front of Ethan and some of the company's biggest clients.
