Chapter 3 – Unexpected Kindness
The following Monday began with tension hanging over the executive floor.
"Mr. Blackwood has an important meeting with investors at ten," Sophie whispered to Amelia. "Everything has to be perfect."
Amelia nodded confidently.
"I've checked everything three times."
At exactly 10:00 a.m., the investors arrived. Ethan welcomed them with his usual calm expression before leading everyone into the conference room.
As the presentation began, Ethan confidently explained the company's latest project. Everything was going smoothly—until the large screen suddenly went black.
The projector had stopped working.
The room fell silent.
One of the investors glanced at his watch impatiently.
Amelia noticed the IT team wouldn't arrive for several minutes.
Without waiting, she quickly connected her laptop to the conference room monitor, opened the backup presentation she had saved the night before, and restored the slides within moments.
The meeting continued without further interruption.
Ethan looked at her briefly. For the first time, there was a hint of approval in his eyes.
After the investors left, one of them shook Ethan's hand.
"You've hired a smart assistant, Mr. Blackwood. She saved today's meeting."
Ethan simply nodded.
"I know."
Later that afternoon, Amelia was organizing files when Ethan stepped out of his office.
"Miss Carter."
She stood immediately.
"Yes, sir?"
"You handled the situation well this morning."
Amelia blinked in surprise.
"Thank you, sir."
"I appreciate employees who prepare for problems before they happen."
It wasn't a long speech, but to Amelia, it meant everything.
"Thank you for noticing."
For the first time, Ethan gave a small smile.
It disappeared almost as quickly as it came.
"You may leave on time today."
Amelia laughed softly after he walked away.
"I think that's his version of being nice."
That evening, heavy rain poured over London.
As Amelia stepped outside the building, she realized she had forgotten her umbrella.
She sighed.
"Perfect."
Just as she was about to run into the rain, a black luxury car stopped beside her.
The window rolled down.
It was Ethan.
"Get in."
Amelia hesitated.
"Sir?"
"It's raining. I'm not asking twice."
She quickly got into the passenger seat.
The ride was quiet at first, with only the sound of rain tapping against the windows.
"So," Ethan finally said, keeping his eyes on the road, "where do you live?"
"Not far from Camden."
"I'll drop you there."
Amelia looked out the window, hiding a small smile.
Maybe the cold, distant CEO wasn't as heartless as everyone believed.
And neither of them realized that this simple act of kindness was the beginning of a story that would change both their lives forever.
