Chapter 4 – Working Late

The next morning, Amelia arrived at the office earlier than usual.

As she stepped out of the elevator, she noticed Ethan was already in his office, reviewing documents with a serious expression.

She knocked gently.

"Good morning, sir."

Ethan looked up.

"Good morning, Miss Carter. We have an important client presentation in three days. I want every detail to be flawless."

"I understand, sir."

"I'll need you to stay late this week."

Amelia smiled politely.

"I'm happy to help."

For the next three days, the office became their second home.

While most employees left by 6:00 p.m., Amelia and Ethan remained in the executive office, surrounded by reports, laptops, and coffee cups.

One evening, Amelia stretched her arms and sighed.

"I never knew preparing one presentation could take this much work."

Ethan looked at her over his laptop.

"Success is built on the work people never see."

She smiled.

"Do you always work this hard?"

"I didn't build this company by leaving early."

Amelia laughed softly.

"I guess that's true."

For the first time, Ethan found himself smiling at one of her jokes.

Around 9:00 p.m., Amelia's stomach growled loudly.

She froze in embarrassment.

Ethan raised an eyebrow.

"You skipped dinner?"

She looked away.

"I was focused on finishing the reports."

Without saying another word, Ethan picked up his phone.

Twenty minutes later, a delivery arrived.

He placed a bag on her desk.

"Eat."

Amelia blinked.

"You ordered food?"

"I can't have my assistant fainting before tomorrow's meeting."

She opened the bag and found a warm pasta meal, garlic bread, and a bottle of juice.

"Thank you, sir."

"You're welcome."

As they ate, the silence between them no longer felt uncomfortable.

They talked about books, travel, and their favorite places in London.

Amelia was surprised to discover that beneath Ethan's cold exterior was a man who loved classical music, enjoyed quiet evenings, and cared deeply about the company he had built.

Ethan, in turn, admired Amelia's determination and optimism despite the challenges she had faced.

When they finally completed the presentation, the office clock read 11:30 p.m.

Amelia leaned back with a tired smile.

"We did it."

Ethan looked at the finished project.

"No," he corrected gently. "We did it."

It was the first time he had called them a team.

Amelia couldn't hide her smile.

As they left the building together, neither of them noticed a figure watching from across the street.

It was Victoria Hayes, Ethan's elegant former fiancée.

She saw the way Ethan opened the car door for Amelia.

Her eyes narrowed.

"So," she whispered to herself, "there's someone new."

A slow smile crossed her face.

"This should be interesting."
