Chapter 5 – Office Rumors
The next morning, Amelia walked into Blackwood Technologies with a smile on her face. The successful presentation from the previous night had boosted her confidence.
As she made her way to her desk, she noticed several employees glancing at her and whispering to one another.
She frowned.
"Is something wrong?"
Before anyone could answer, Sophie hurried over.
"Amelia, come with me."
They stepped into the break room.
Sophie sighed.
"People saw you leaving the office with Mr. Blackwood last night."
Amelia's eyes widened.
"He was only giving me a ride home because it was raining."
"I know that, but not everyone believes it."
Amelia shook her head.
"This is ridiculous."
"It is," Sophie agreed. "But office gossip spreads faster than the truth."
Inside his office, Ethan remained focused on work as though nothing had happened.
His phone rang.
"Mr. Blackwood," his secretary said, "Miss Victoria Hayes is here to see you."
Ethan frowned.
"I didn't schedule a meeting with her."
"She says it's personal."
After a brief pause, he replied, "Send her in."
The door opened, and Victoria entered with a confident smile.
"It's been a long time, Ethan."
"What do you want, Victoria?"
She sat down without being invited.
"I heard you've hired a beautiful new assistant."
Ethan's expression remained unreadable.
"My employees are none of your concern."
Victoria smirked.
"So the rumors are true."
"There are no rumors—only people who enjoy creating stories."
Victoria stood and walked toward the window.
"You've changed."
"No," Ethan replied calmly. "I've simply moved on."
Her smile disappeared.
Later that afternoon, Amelia was delivering documents when she accidentally bumped into Victoria in the hallway.
"I'm so sorry," Amelia said.
Victoria looked her up and down.
"So... you're Amelia Carter."
Amelia nodded politely.
"Yes."
Victoria extended her hand.
"I'm Victoria Hayes."
Amelia smiled and shook it.
"It's nice to meet you."
Victoria's smile looked warm, but her eyes were anything but friendly.
"I've heard a lot about you."
Amelia felt an uneasy chill.
"I hope only good things."
Victoria leaned in slightly.
"Be careful, Amelia."
"Excuse me?"
"Getting too close to Ethan Blackwood has never ended well for anyone."
Without another word, Victoria walked away, leaving Amelia standing in the hallway, confused and unsettled.
That evening, Ethan noticed Amelia was unusually quiet.
"Is something bothering you?"
She hesitated.
"I met Miss Hayes today."
Ethan sighed.
"What did she say?"
"She warned me to stay away from you."
For a moment, Ethan was silent.
Then he looked directly at Amelia.
"You don't have to worry about Victoria."
His voice was calm, but firm.
"I won't let anyone make your work here difficult."
Amelia looked into his eyes and saw something she hadn't seen before.
Concern.
As she smiled softly, neither of them realized that their growing trust was becoming harder to hide—and that someone inside the company was already planning to use it against them.
