Chapter 7 – Jealous Hearts The Monday after the charity gala, the atmosphere at Blackwood Technologies felt different. Employees stopped talking whenever Amelia walked past. Some smiled politely. Others simply stared. Amelia tried to ignore the whispers, but they followed her everywhere. "She's the one who went to the gala with Mr. Blackwood." "Did you see the photos online?" "Maybe she's more than just his assistant." She sighed and focused on her work. Inside his office, Ethan was reviewing a proposal when his phone buzzed. It was his longtime friend and business partner, Daniel Brooks. Daniel walked into the office a few minutes later, holding his phone. "You've become the hottest topic in London's business circles." Ethan looked up. "What are you talking about?" Daniel placed the phone on the desk. Photos from the charity gala filled the screen. One headline read: 'Has London's Most Eligible CEO Finally Found Love?' Ethan frowned. "The media loves making up stories." Daniel smiled. "But tell me honestly... is there something between you and Amelia?" Ethan didn't answer. Instead, he looked out the window. For the first time in years, he couldn't deny that Amelia had become important to him. Meanwhile, Amelia was organizing files when Victoria unexpectedly appeared at her desk. "Good morning, Amelia." "Good morning, Miss Hayes." Victoria placed a designer handbag on the desk and smiled. "I came to offer you some advice." "I'm listening." "You seem like a nice girl." "Thank you." "So don't make the mistake of falling for Ethan." Amelia remained silent. "Men like him don't fall in love with employees." Victoria turned to leave but paused. "When this is over, you're the one who'll get hurt." She walked away before Amelia could respond. That evening, Ethan found Amelia alone in the office, staring at the city lights through the window. "You've been quiet all day." She forced a smile. "I'm fine." "No, you're not." She hesitated before speaking. "Do you ever wish people would stop assuming things about us?" Ethan stepped beside her. "I stopped worrying about rumors a long time ago." "I wish I could." He looked at her gently. "You don't have to carry this alone." For a moment, neither of them spoke. The silence felt comforting instead of awkward. Then Amelia looked into his eyes. "I'm glad I work for you." Ethan smiled—a genuine smile she had never seen before. "And I'm glad you accepted the job." Outside the office, hidden behind the slightly open door, someone quietly lowered a phone after recording their conversation. A mysterious figure whispered, "This is exactly what I need." The recording was sent to an unknown number. The message underneath read: "Phase one is complete." End of Chapter 7
