Chapter 8 – Feelings They Can't Ignore
The next morning, Amelia couldn't stop thinking about her conversation with Ethan.
His smile.
His words.
The way he had looked at her.
She shook her head as she organized his schedule.
"He's your boss, Amelia. Don't let your feelings get in the way."
Just then, Ethan walked into the office.
"Good morning."
She smiled. "Good morning, sir."
For the first time, the greeting felt different. Warmer.
Later that afternoon, Ethan and Amelia traveled together to meet a potential investor outside London.
The meeting was a success, but as they drove back, dark clouds filled the sky.
Within minutes, heavy rain began pouring, making it impossible to continue safely.
The driver turned to Ethan.
"Sir, the roads are flooding. We should stop until the rain eases."
Ethan nodded.
They checked into a quiet countryside hotel for the night.
After dinner, Amelia stepped onto the balcony outside her room.
The rain had stopped, leaving the air cool and fresh.
She looked up at the stars, lost in thought.
"I thought I'd find you here."
She turned.
Ethan stood in the doorway with two cups of hot chocolate.
"I remembered you don't drink coffee late at night," he said, handing her one.
She smiled.
"You remembered?"
"I pay attention."
They stood in silence for a while.
Finally, Ethan spoke.
"Can I ask you something?"
"Of course."
"Why do you work so hard?"
Amelia looked down at her cup.
"My father passed away when I was young. My mother worked endlessly to raise my brother and me. I promised myself that one day I'd give her a better life."
Ethan listened quietly.
"My parents died in a car accident when I was twenty-three," he admitted. "Building this company became my way of coping with the loss."
Amelia looked at him with sympathy.
"I'm so sorry."
"So am I."
For the first time, they weren't a CEO and his assistant.
They were simply two people who had known pain.
As the night grew colder, Amelia shivered.
Without thinking, Ethan took off his suit jacket and placed it gently over her shoulders.
Their eyes met.
Neither of them looked away.
Slowly, Ethan reached for her hand.
"Amelia..."
Before he could say another word, his phone rang.
The moment was broken.
He answered reluctantly.
"What is it?"
His expression changed.
"We'll leave first thing in the morning."
He ended the call.
"Everything okay?" Amelia asked.
"There was a security issue at the office. We need to get back early."
She nodded, though part of her wished the moment had lasted a little longer.
As Ethan watched her walk back inside, he finally admitted the truth to himself.
He wasn't just protecting his assistant anymore.
He was falling in love with her.
And deep in her heart, Amelia knew she was falling in love with her boss too.
