Chapter 9 – The First Kiss

The next morning, Ethan and Amelia returned to Blackwood Technologies.

The security issue had turned out to be a failed attempt to access confidential company files. Nothing had been stolen, but the incident left everyone on edge.

"We'll tighten security," Ethan told his management team. "Until we know who is behind this, no one shares sensitive information outside the company."

Everyone nodded.

Amelia noticed Ethan looked exhausted.

After the meeting, she quietly placed a cup of coffee on his desk.

"You've barely had a chance to rest."

He looked up from his laptop.

"Neither have you."

She smiled.

"I'll survive."

"So will I."

The days that followed were filled with meetings, investigations, and deadlines.

Despite the pressure, Ethan and Amelia found themselves spending more time together than ever before.

One evening, they stayed late again to prepare for a board meeting.

As Amelia reached for a file on the top shelf, she lost her balance.

"Ethan!"

Before she could fall, Ethan caught her by the waist.

The room became completely still.

Their faces were only inches apart.

"Are you okay?" he asked softly.

"I... I think so."

Neither of them moved.

Neither of them spoke.

Amelia could hear her own heartbeat.

"So could Ethan, or at least it felt that way.

Slowly, he brushed a loose strand of hair away from her face.

"You always try to handle everything on your own."

She smiled nervously.

"I guess I do."

"You don't have to."

For a long moment, they simply looked at each other.

Then Ethan gently cupped her cheek.

"Amelia..."

She didn't pull away.

Instead, she took a small step closer.

Their eyes closed.

And at last, Ethan kissed her.

It was soft, gentle, and filled with all the emotions they had been trying to hide.

When they finally pulled apart, Amelia whispered,

"What happens now?"

Ethan smiled—a smile warmer than any she had seen before.

"The truth."

He took her hand.

"I've been trying to ignore my feelings, but I can't anymore."

She felt tears of happiness gather in her eyes.

"I've been trying to ignore mine too."

Just as Ethan was about to speak again, the office door suddenly opened.

Sophie stood frozen in the doorway.

"Oh... I'm so sorry!" she exclaimed, quickly stepping back and closing the door.

Silence filled the room.

Amelia covered her face in embarrassment.

"I guess our secret didn't last very long."

Ethan laughed for the first time in years.

"No," he said, still holding her hand. "I guess it didn't."

Outside the office, however, another pair of eyes had witnessed everything from the security camera monitors.

A shadowy figure smiled coldly.

"This is exactly the scandal I've been waiting for."
