CHAPTER 7: THE SIEGE

The glass walled executive boardroom of Shaw Global looked down over the heart of the financial district, but inside, the atmosphere was suffocating. Rain streaked across the floor to ceiling glass windows, blurring the gray skyline beyond. Lyra stood at the head of the dark mahogany conference table, clad in a sharp, immaculately tailored midnight navy power suit. Across the lapel of her blazer ran a quiet strip of silver metallic brocade, glittering softly beneath the overhead lights. Her natural silver hair was pulled back into a tight, pristine bun, framing her high cheekbones and pale blue eyes. Surrounding her were twelve panicking board members. Screens around the room glowed red with falling stock tickers and live news coverage detailing her alleged corporate fraud. "The board cannot sustain this level of public exposure!" Harold Vance, the senior board member, declared as he leaned heavily over the polished wood. "The SEC is reviewing the leaked offshore transfers. Shaw Global stock has plummeted fourteen percent since the opening bell!" Lyra did not blink. She let the silence stretch for three long seconds, watching the sweat glistening on Harold’s temple. When she spoke, her tone was not angry; it was a low, steady current of pure ice, grounded in absolute control. "The offshore transfers are fabricated, Harold," Lyra said smoothly, her voice carrying a quiet, human weight that demanded stillness. "The routing codes on those documents belong to a shell corporation closed five years ago. I spent the last three hours personally verifying the bank ledgers with our forensic auditors. The legal injunction against the news outlets broadcasting the leak is already being filed." "And what about the Croft scandal?" another director interjected, pointing a trembling finger at a muted television screen showing Isabelle Freeman entering the Croft estate under security escort. "Isabelle Freeman is claiming she carries the next Croft heir. If the Croft family pulls their corporate backing to deal with a domestic paternity disaster, our credit lines collapse by midnight." "The Croft family is not pulling anything," a deep, gravelly voice echoed from the doorway. The room went instantly still. Rowan stepped into the boardroom. He had traded his dark studio attire for a tailored slate gray suit, the precise tone echoing the silver undertones of Lyra's navy jacket. pinned to the left chest of his jacket was a pocket square crafted from the exact same silver metallic brocade that adorned Lyra's lapel, an undeniable visual anchor binding them together. Behind him walked Gabriel, his head legal counsel, carrying two thick leather binders stamped with federal seals. Rowan walked up the length of the long table, ignoring the wide eyes of the board members. His dark brown gaze locked straight onto Lyra. When he reached her side, he didn't pull back or maintain corporate distance. He placed his large palm flat against the high back of her leather chair, standing close enough that his arm brushed her shoulder, physically shielding her from the room. "Let me make the position of the Croft estate absolute," Rowan said, his low voice vibrating with a calm authority that swallowed the room whole. "As of eight o'clock this morning, I have personally backed Shaw Global with sixty percent of my private liquidity reserves. If any member of this board attempts to initiate an executive vote to suspend my wife, I will buy your individual shares at a loss and remove you from this company before sunset." Harold Vance swallowed hard, his face turning pale as Gabriel began sliding legal documents in front of each director. "Mr. Croft... this level of capital integration without prior board consultation—" "Is entirely legal under the emergency authority of the chief executive officer," Lyra interjected smoothly, taking full control of the room before Harold could finish his sentence. She did not flinch as Rowan’s hand shifted slightly, his thumb brushing against the base of her neck through her jacket collar, radiating a subtle heat that grounded her. Her eyes, cool and analytical, scanned the faces of the twelve men before her. She didn't just see nervous directors; she saw leverage. She saw fear, and she knew exactly how to turn that fear into an absolute weapon. "The capital infusion stabilizes our stock floor instantly," Lyra continued, her voice dropping into a razor sharp, calculated register. "You have thirty minutes to sign the non disclosure waivers and clear this room. Anyone who hesitates will find their private share allocations audited for compliance by my personal legal team before the market closes." The board members exchanged rapid, terrified looks. One by one, they reached for their pens. Before the last director could sign, the heavy glass door slid open once more. Maya, Lyra's executive assistant, stepped into the room holding an encrypted tablet, her expression tense. "Miss Shaw... Mr. Croft..." Maya said softly. "Mrs. Isolde Croft just released a formal statement from the Croft estate." Lyra took the tablet, her pale blue eyes sweeping over the text with cold, terrifying speed. Isolde had moved with calculated, high society precision. Rather than attacking Lyra directly, the matriarch had officially welcomed Isabelle Freeman into the private guest wing of the Croft estate for the health and protection of the potential Croft heir during this difficult time. It was a masterstroke of psychological manipulation designed to frame Isabelle as the victim while quietly painting Lyra’s marriage as a fraud. Rowan read the screen over Lyra's shoulder, his dark jaw tightening as his eyes turned into pure steel. "She is isolating Isabelle under her roof to force a public rift between us." Lyra set the tablet face down on the polished mahogany table with a quiet, deliberate click. A ruthless, calculated smile touched the corners of her lips as her mind pieced together the counter move. "She thinks she is playing a victim narrative," Lyra murmured, her voice laced with lethal precision. "She opened the doors of the estate to the media, which means she just gave us full access to her home turf." Rowan looked down at her, his dark eyes flaring with possessive interest. "What are you calculating, Ly?" "We don't defend ourselves in the press, Ro," Lyra said smoothly, turning to face him fully, her fingers reaching up to rest against the silver brocade on his chest. "We attend your mother's private weekend dinner at the estate. We walk through her front door together, fully united, and we demand the independent medical team pull Isabelle's blood right at Isolde's dining table in front of the family." Rowan’s lips curved into a dark, vicious smirk as his hand wrapped tightly around hers. "Name the time, wife. I'll drive."
