CHAPTER 8: THE ESTATE SIEGE

884 Words
The iron gates of the Croft estate parted smoothly, allowing the sleek black sedan to glide up the winding, tree-lined driveway. Rain hammered against the reinforced glass, casting fractured shadows across the rolling lawns of the country property. At the end of the stone path stood the main manor, a colossal French Renaissance structure of slate and granite, glowing with amber light from its floor to ceiling windows. Inside the rear cabin, the silence was grounded and heavy with expectation. Lyra sat beside Rowan, her posture straight and commanding. She wore a high-neck velvet gown in midnight navy, cut with clean precision across the shoulders. Across her chest ran a quiet panel of hand-embroidered silver brocade that mirrored the dark ink traced along her spine. Her hair was styled in tight, intricate braided loops pinned low at the nape of her neck. Beside her, Rowan adjusted his slate-gray suit jacket, which featured a matching strip of silver brocade along his lapel. His large hand rested over Lyra’s gloved fingers, his grip firm and steady as the car slowed to a halt beneath the stone portico. "My mother called in two estate trustees for tonight," Rowan said smoothly, his deep voice carrying over the quiet hum of the engine. "She expects a quiet, traditional dinner where everyone smiles and pretends the media isn't circling outside." "She expects us to play by her social rules," Lyra replied softly, her pale blue eyes cool and untroubled. "She thinks because we share the same circles, I'll keep quiet to save face." Rowan turned to her, his dark eyes fixed on her face. "And will you?" "Not a chance," Lyra said quietly. The private chauffeur opened the rear door. Rowan stepped out into the rain, extending his hand. Lyra placed her palm in his, stepping onto the wet stone. Rowan pulled her flush against his side, his large palm settling against her hip as they walked together through the grand mahogany doors into the marble foyer. The estate steward bowed respectfully as they entered. "Good evening, Mr. Rowan. Mrs. Croft. The matriarch is expecting you in the formal dining salon. Dinner is ready to be served." Rowan gave a brief nod, keeping his arm firmly anchored around Lyra’s waist as he guided her through the grand archways toward the dining wing. The grand dining salon was bathed in warm, muted light from a central crystal chandelier. A long mahogany table stretched across the room, set with gold rimmed china and antique silver cutlery. Seated at the head of the table was Isolde Croft, breathtaking in burgundy silk, her classic pearls gleaming at her throat. To her right sat two senior estate trustees, engaged in low conversation. To her left sat Isabelle Freeman, wearing a demure pastel dress. Isabelle sat comfortably, her shoulders relaxed, carrying the subtle, quiet confidence of a woman who knew she had the matriarch's full protection under this roof. The heavy double doors opened, and the room grew quiet. Rowan and Lyra walked into the salon together. The visual alignment between them was absolute, their matching brocade drawing every eye in the room. Isolde’s gaze swept over them, her polite smile remaining perfectly in place as she gestured toward the empty place settings opposite Isabelle. "Rowan, Lyra," Isolde said, her voice smooth, polite, and completely controlled. "You made good time despite the weather. Please, sit. We were just discussing the upcoming estate foundation gala with the trustees." Rowan pulled out the heavy carved chair for Lyra, his fingers brushing the nape of her neck as she sat down before taking his place right beside her. Isabelle offered Lyra a small, distant nod across the table, taking a slow sip of her water. She didn't look flustered; backed by Isolde's quiet authority, Isabelle felt entirely secure in her position within the estate. The staff began serving the first course, setting down crystal soup bowls in seamless unison. "The press has been quite noisy today," Isolde remarked lightly, using her silver spoon with effortless grace. "It is always unfortunate when private family adjustments leak to the public before decorum can be established." Lyra set her napkin across her lap, her expression a mask of pure corporate ice as she looked directly at Isolde. "Decorum isn't the issue, Isolde. The issue is a doctored financial leak designed to destabilize Shaw Global, accompanied by an unverified medical claim." One of the trustees cleared his throat nervously, looking between the two women. Isolde raised her eyebrows slightly, her tone remaining soft and maternal. "My dear, when a young woman's health and future are at stake, the Croft family opens its doors. Isabelle is staying in the west wing under my personal care. That is simply how our family handles delicate matters." Isabelle held her head a little higher, a subtle, confident calm in her eyes as she looked at Rowan. Rowan didn't touch his silver spoon. He leaned back in his chair, resting his forearm on the table, his dark brown eyes fixing onto his mother with a cold, unsettling weight. "Isabelle can stay in whichever wing she likes, Mother," Rowan said, his low voice cutting cleanly through the quiet room. "As long as she understands that a private state forensic team is arriving at this table before the dessert course."
