A Desperate Search
Luna Mendoza stood at the edge of the bustling city, her worn-out shoes echoing softly against the pavement. The towering buildings loomed above her, each one a symbol of opportunity—or rejection. With a folder clutched tightly in her hands, she took a deep breath and stepped into yet another company lobby, hoping this would be the one. Her eyes scanned the room, noting the polished floors, the sleek furniture, and the receptionist typing away behind a grand desk. She approached hesitantly, her voice barely above a whisper. "Good morning. I'm here to apply for any available positions." The receptionist glanced up, offering a polite smile. "Please fill out this form and wait to be called." Luna nodded. "Thank you." Just as she was about to finish, a woman approached her. She was elegant, with a confident stride and a warm smile. Her presence was both calming and intriguing. "Hi there," the woman greeted. "Are you here for the job application?" Luna looked up, surprised by the stranger's friendliness. "Yes, I am." The woman extended her hand. "I'm Celeste Navarro, but you can call me Cess. I work here, and I might be able to help you get in." Hope sparked in Luna's eyes. "Really? That would be amazing." Cess smiled. "Come with me." Without hesitation, Luna followed Cess through a series of hallways, each more ornate than the last. They passed by various rooms filled with people engaged in lively conversations and laughter. It felt less like a corporate environment and more like a social gathering. There were children playing, elders chatting animatedly, and adults mingling as though at a family reunion. Luna's confusion grew with every step. Where was the office? The workstations? The employees glued to their computers? Instead, she found herself stepping into a spacious room where music played softly in the background and everyone seemed genuinely happy. Cess introduced her to several individuals, each one more welcoming than the last. They spent the day sharing stories, playing games, and enjoying each other's company. Luna found herself laughing and relaxing in a way she hadn't in weeks. For a moment, she forgot the weight of her job hunt. She felt like a guest in someone's home, not an applicant. Hours passed. Luna had long since stopped looking at her phone for updates or checking the time. She had immersed herself in this strange but warm environment. The people she met shared interesting stories about their lives, though none of them mentioned the kind of work they did. It was as if she had entered another world, one where careers and job responsibilities didn’t seem to exist. She met a child named Mira who sang songs for her, a retired teacher named Tita Lorie who gave her a small hand-sewn pouch “for luck,” and a cheerful man named Jay who offered her mango juice with a wink. Everyone seemed to know each other and welcomed her like family. In one corner, a group was painting on canvas, while another group was practicing yoga. Luna joined in on both, finding herself drawn to the creativity and movement. At one point, she and Cess sat down in a circle with the others, engaging in what appeared to be a storytelling game where each person added a sentence to a growing tale. When the clock finally chimed four, Cess leaned in and whispered, “Let’s step outside for a moment, can we?” Luna followed her out, the sunlight outside casting long golden shadows on the ground. Cess turned to face her, the cheerfulness from earlier now replaced by something more serious. "So," Cess began, folding her arms, "what did you think of everyone inside?" Luna smiled. "They were all so kind and full of energy. It felt like being part of a big family." Cess nodded. "Would you feel comfortable working with them?" "Absolutely," Luna replied without hesitation. "And do you think you can match their energy?" Cess asked next. Luna hesitated for just a second. "I believe so. I can adapt." Cess reached into her bag and pulled out her phone. She opened something that looked like a futuristic resume: her name, nickname, and photo appeared at the top. To the right were arrow icons with changing percentages. Below was a line graph displaying various data points, and at the very bottom, a bold figure showing her monthly earnings. Luna's eyes widened. She had never seen such a layout before, nor such large digits beside the word monthly income. "This is what I earn from my work here," Cess explained. "It's 100% legitimate, so there's no need to worry." Luna looked at her in awe. "All you need is to be presentable, always wear a smile, and know how to connect with people. That’s it." Cess leaned in, her expression deadly serious. "So, Luna, do you want to be like me?" The question hung in the air, heavy with meaning. Luna felt something stir inside her. It was more than curiosity—it was the beginning of a choice that would change everything. Luna didn’t answer right away. They walked to a nearby park bench and sat under a flowering tree, the scent of jasmine and orange blossoms thick in the air. Luna glanced at Cess, her thoughts tangled. “What exactly is this job?” she finally asked. Cess smirked slightly, but it wasn’t mocking—it was patient. “It’s not a job you’ll find listed online. What we do is simple but powerful. We interact with people. We inspire them. We create connections that lead to opportunities—both for ourselves and for others.” Luna frowned slightly. “That sounds… vague.” Cess nodded. “It does. Because it’s not something you understand from a job description. You feel it. You live it. And over time, you see the results. Look at me—I used to be just like you, job hunting every day, exhausted, defeated. Someone brought me here once. I made the choice. Now, I’m offering it to you.” Luna looked down at her hands, recalling the joy and energy of everyone in that strange but welcoming room. “And the people inside? Are they all part of it?” “Yes,” Cess said with a calm nod. “They’ve all made the same choice.” Luna’s mind raced. Was this some kind of cult? A social experiment? Or was it really as simple as finding a new way to live and work that centered on joy, interaction, and confidence? “Will I be selling something?” she asked. “No,” Cess replied. “You’ll be selling yourself. Your energy. Your image. Your ability to connect. But not in the way you’re thinking. This isn’t modeling or influencing. It’s about presence. Showing up. Being that spark someone needs.” Luna looked at her resume, still clutched in her hands. It suddenly felt outdated, meaningless next to the sleek digital one Cess had shown her. “What happens if I say yes?” Cess smiled. “You start training tomorrow.” “And if I say no?” “I'll walk you back to the lobby. You’ll wait for a call that may never come. And you’ll keep searching.” Luna sat in silence, the breeze brushing strands of hair across her face. The choice wasn’t simple—but it wasn’t terrifying either. Deep inside, something told her this was the right path, even if it didn’t make sense yet. Finally, she looked at Cess. “Okay. I want to try.” Cess’s smile widened, not of triumph, but of pride. “Good. Then let’s begin.”
