CAYENNE’S POV:
The roads were clear and the night almost over as we drove back to our pack. We were almost there. I still had the girl in my arms. Surprisingly, Dex didn’t want to let her go and neither did I. I’d taken time to examine the little person in my arms. She was the prettiest girl I’d ever seen and what drew me in more was her hair, a pretty shade of violet and soft to the touch too.
Who was she? Why was I so attracted to her? What did she have to do with what happened to Ace?
I had so many questions. Luckily, Morwenna teleported next to me at that moment. I turned to her, waiting for an explanation. I needed to understand what I’d gotten myself into.
She smiled calmly and only spoke seven words. “All your questions will be answered soon.” Then she disappeared and I knew she’d teleported straight to the pack house. I almost growled in frustration. Why did she always have to be so vague in her dealings? But I knew I had to trust her. If she says my questions will be answered, then they will be. I just had to exercise patience for the time being.
I shifted my attention to the person in my arms and subconsciously pulled her closer, wrapping my coat around her. Why was she wearing so little? I wondered getting a bit upset at the thought of her being on display for those other unmated wolves earlier, like honey attracting bees.
My eyes lock on Jeremy who is staring a little too much at her from the passenger seat and I let out a deep growl. He startles and looks away flushed.
“My apologies Alpha, I- I- it’s just surprising to see you this way.” He stutters not daring to look back. Of course, it was. I’m even surprised at myself. Everyone knew I hadn’t had contact with any female like this in the last five years, since I’d lost Ruby. Not that there weren’t any interested females, I’d just hadn’t accepted anyone… No, I couldn’t. Ruby was my mate and after she died, it was impossible to bond with anyone else. Be it our wolf nature or whatever, it kept me from other females. I could only ever be attracted to one female, my mate … and I already lost her.
So why? Unless…
Was that even possible right now? Wasn’t it too late?
Morwenna’s words from earlier flooded my memory. “Alpha, the moon goddess has remembered you tonight.” Was this what she meant?
Damn it! I needed to get Morwenna to explain everything to me. I let out a frustrated breath. How was I going to get her to talk?
The girl moved in my arms, her little bottom rubbing against me and I have to grith my teeth from groaning out. How long did it take to get to the pack house?
My answer came soon enough and I caught a glimpse of our border up ahead. It was already late and the town was quiet. Most of the pack had gone to bed already, thankfully. I didn’t want them waking and scaring the girl in my arms. I knew how excited they could get…especially since it involved me.
Morwenna was waiting at the entrance of the pack house as well as Cole, Red and some of my men. I didn’t leave the car immediately, instead I took a deep breath to calm myself and also to prepare mentally for the questions I knew my sister, Red, would attack me with.
My beast, Dex wasn’t willing to let the other wolves see her. I wasn’t either. But I needed to get her off my body before I lose control. Besides, the wolves Morwenna had gathered were already mated wolves and that calmed Dex down a bit. So, I reluctantly got off the car, my arms tightening around her as I watched the people before me cautiously.
“OH, MY GOOODNESS!!!” Red was the first to exclaim. “Wenna wasn’t lying when she said you brought home a girl.” She said with a knowing smirk.
Cole looked at me like I was someone else. My men looked astonished. I wouldn’t blame them though; I wasn’t someone who’d get this close to the opposite s*x. Hell, even I was still confused about what was going on.
I looked over at Morwenna, letting her know through my eyes that I needed an explanation for all these.
“Let’s get her inside first. She needs proper rest.” She says and as though on cue, the girl moves in my arms. Not wanting to let her go, I shift her position so that her head is nestled perfectly in the curve of my neck. Dex satisfied sigh drums on my ear and I let out a small smile.
“Aww…” I hear Red drawl as she takes Cole’s hand and makes goo goo eyes at me.
One of my men step forward, ready to take her from me. A powerful growl ripped out from my throat before he could even come close. My canines were extending and I was ready to tear him to pieces as soon as he touched her, even for a little bit.
She was mine and nobody could take her from me. I’d kill anyone that tried. I let out another warning growl and everyone moves back a bit; except for Red. She had her phone up and was recording the whole thing. I could hear the glee in her voice as she spoke next. “Dad is not going believe this and mom won’t see this coming!”
“I don’t think that’s a good idea, babe.” Cole says as he stepped forward to stop her but another growl ripped out from my throat causing him to pause.
The girl in my arms startle and wakes; and I’m filled with guilt. I didn’t mean to wake her up. I expect her to panic as she takes in her surrounding with sleepy eyes but she returns her eyes to me, taking me in. I expect her to jump back in fear but strangely, her hands slowly reach out to hold my jaws. I didn’t know if it was the warmth from her tiny hands on my face or if it was the innocent curious look she had on or perhaps it was her eyes…those beautiful violet orbs, whatever it was, it had my heart racing and my anger calming down. even my canines retracted.
Then she smiled…
I could swear the world melted. She was so beautiful. I couldn’t take my eyes off those enticing lips of hers. They looked so plumped and soft, I wanted to take a bite from them. Would they be as soft as they looked? By the gods, I wanted to have a taste of them.
I didn’t get the chance to. She withdrew her hands and went back to the curve of my neck. She fell asleep still smiling and damn if I didn’t smile too.
“Seeing him act like this again after so many years, how can I not record this moment? This is a worthy blackmail material, you know?” Red’s voice rings out and I see that she’s grinning from ear to ear. She turns to Cole and speaks. “Hey babe, can you step forward again? I wanna see how vexed Cay could get.” Then she turns back to me and says: “Sorry Dex, you have to be my co-star tonight.” She lets out a chuckle afterwards feeling pleased with herself.
“Sorry Alpha!” Cole apologizes with his neck bared in submission. The other men do the same while Red rolls her eyes and murmurs: “Joy killer” as she put her phone away.
But at this point, I wasn’t even listening to them. They made way for me as I moved past them and into the pack house. I head for my room which was on the top floor. No damn way in hell was I letting her stay anywhere else. She was staying only with me and only on my bed.
Morwenna walked up the stairs after me. she was the only one that came after me, thankfully. I reached my room in no time and gently placed the clingy girl on my bed. Then covered her up with the blanket. She tossed around for a moment and then settled comfortably on the bed.
I smiled and turned to leave. Morwenna was waiting by the door, her eyes fixed on the girl on the bed. She turned her eye to me when I reached the door. “Go, I’ll be here.” She says as she enters the room. I give her a small nod and turn to look at the girl one more time, reluctant to leave. “Don’t worry, no one enters.” Morwenna assures me and I’m relieved. If Morwenna says no one enters, then no one enters.
I leave the room and head to my study, knowing my Beta was waiting for me. He had to know as much as what was going on.
Sure enough, he stood outside the door but he wasn’t alone. Bethram stood next to him. “Alpha” they both greeted, their head bowed in submission.
I walked into the study and they followed after me.
“What is going on, Alpha? Who was that girl? Jeremy mentioned something about some sort of trouble in the Moonlight pack.” Cole fires as soon as I sit down.
“I’m not sure what’s going on either.” I answer truthfully. Then I take a deep breath and tell them everything that happened at the moonlight pack. And when I’m done, Cole is as confused as I am and Bethram is lost in deep thought. “The only thing I’m certain of, is that I’m attracted to her.” I confess.
“I think it’s best to have Jeremy return to the moonlight pack to investigate what happens to Alpha Ace.” Cole suggests and after thinking for a while, I agree. That was a good idea. I had to find out if the moonlight pack could trace the girl back to us as well as what had happened between Ace and the little girl. I was almost certain that she was the mate he’d rejected.
But why would he reject her in the first place?
I turn to Bethram. He’s still lost in his thoughts and I wonder if he’s hiding something. “Did you look into what I asked you to?” I bring him back with my question.
“Yes Alpha, you were right. Alpha Ace did send an invite to the Nyx coven. It’s possible that they were present for the banquet. It seems that Ace wants to gain more alliances and increase his strength.” He pauses for a moment. “But with who the Nyx are, it can’t be that simple. There’s more going on. And with what has happened…”
“You think the Nyx are involved with what happened to Alpha Ace?” Cole asks, a frown marring his forehead.
“It’s possible, after all, they’re not a good coven. There’s only one piece that doesn’t fit into this puzzle.” Bethram says, thoughtfully.
“The girl.” I complete his thoughts.
“Bingo! I can’t tell if she’s a spy or a trap.”
“But she can’t be one of them. Morwenna wouldn’t let Cay bring her back to the pack if she was. She would know if she was a trap or spy.” Cole says his frown deepening.
“Why would the Nyx be after us? Especially if they’re with Ace?” I ask and we all fall silent. The puzzle wasn’t adding up. We needed more details. “Send Jeremy back to the moonlight pack. We need more information on what’s going on.” I say to my Beta and he nods, rising to leave.
Bethram rises too. “I’ll go with Jeremy.” He suggests.
I think about it for a moment then agree. Bethram is a powerful warlock. He could get inside information than Jeremy. Whereas Jeremy could go into stealth mode and hide in the shadows, he couldn’t really do much during the day. Bethram had the ability to shapeshift, so he could blend perfectly into the moonlight pack without any suspicions. It was the faster and safest bet. But…
“What about the Nyx? Won’t they know the moment you step into the moonlight grounds?” I voice out my concern. If there was something huge going on that didn’t involve my pack, then Bethram getting discovered would definitely get us involved. A powerful warlock invading a pack would definitely alert any witch coven.
Bethram chuckled a little. “This warlock still has some tricks up his sleeve.” He reassures and I let go of my worries.
They both turn to leave but Cole stops by the door instead. “What about the girl? What do you plan to do about her?” He asks.
I can see he’s hesitating so I let out a sigh. “I’ll figure out what to do.” I reply. I had to figure out everything but how long was Morwenna going to keep me in the dark?
Cole leaves and I’m left alone.
I take a moment to process all that has happened, try and figure out the loopholes. Why after five years, did I feel the mating bond again? Loosing Ruby hadn’t been easy. Hell, I’d almost lost my sanity. If I’d had been a normal wolf, I probably would have been dead by now. Once a wolf lost its mate, it’ll be in a lot of pain. As though a sharp knife was cutting it into pieces and those pieces were placed on fire. The intensity of the pain made the wolf insane and gradually loose it’s humanity. It becomes nothing but a beast in pain and then it dies slowly, like a flower withering away.
My demon nature was what kept me from losing my sanity.
