PRESENT:
LILITH’S POV:
The mating heat wasn’t helping. It was easier for them to follow my scent and find me. I could hear them approaching, they were close by. Panic rose but I suppressed it, reminding myself that the border was closer now. Just a few more sprint and I’d be safe. It was dark, the night was cold but I felt hot allover and I was tired from running. I felt like my body would collapse any moment from now.
As if to confirm my words, I tripped on a stone and fell face flat into the ground, twisting my ankle in the process. Pain seared through me and the heat became more intense. Someone was here…
I sat up and looked at the dark bushes around me. The air was stale and there was a strange silence that hadn’t been there before. That’s when I saw it. The eyes glowing behind the bushes. My breathe caught in my throat as the big black wolf walked out of the bushes towards me, growling. Fear had me rooted on the floor. This was it, the part where I would die.
I was going to get my throat ripped out and then I’d probably bleed to death. There was no way I was escaping the claws of this beast. Except the moon goddess decides to intervene and help me escape; but there was no chance that would happen, I mean look where she’s gotten me, wolfless, weak, with a deranged mate…ex-mate. Yeah, there was no way she was on my side. Maybe this was all for the best. The sooner I die, the sooner I’m reunited with mom, away from this hellhole.
I sat there on the floor, ankle twisted and the mating heat on cloud nine. Everything faded away as I accepted my fate. I was going to die. I would meet mom and be happy forever.
The wolf’s growl deepened.
The night, except the growls from the wolf, was silent, waiting like I was. I closed my eyes, thinking back to those happy memories I had of mom and I. The smiles we shared, the jokes we made, the fun stuffs we did…mom was my world. I remembered the bedtime stories she’d told me, the way she’d always kiss my tears away whenever I fell and hurt myself, the food she cooked and the cakes she always baked on my birthdays. How we’d always clean up our little cottage or go fishing at the stream. How she’d always shooed me off when I tried to help with the laundry but made it worse instead. How she’d laughed at me panicking when I’d had my first monthly bleeding and the long ‘boy lecture’ she’d given me afterwards.
Every moment I’d spent with her, including her last when she’d given her life to save mine. A sad smile played on my lips and my emotions poured out, filling every inch of me until a heavy feeling of loneliness settled. There I was. Weak, pathetic and alone. This was how I die.
I felt the beast lunge for me and I braced myself for the pain that was to come. Except…it never did.
Instead, there was a heavy thud of something being flung hard. I open my eyes startled and the first thing I see is a pair of thick muscular thighs and long legs. My eyes trail them up the long powerful figure. I couldn’t see his face properly in the dark night but I could tell he was someone that shouldn’t be trifled with. He gave off a strong powerful aura and I tried to figure out what rank he could be. But my mind was messed up and hazy from the mating heat. All I could see was him holding me with those thick powerful arms and doing naughty things to me. Yes, very naughty things… I bit my lips and rub my laps together as the heat raced.
Pain spread through me from my already swollen ankle and my hazy mind cleared. This man…werewolf was the biggest I’ve ever seen. He could be 7 feet tall, right? Or was it because I was sprawled on the floor. Next to him was a woman dressed in white robes. She looked smaller standing next to him and had a gentle Aura that reminded me of Racheal. Her white hair reached her waist and she walked gracefully towards me. when she got close, I could see that she was in her fifties and had a kind smile as she looked at me.
“You’re safe now little one.” She says with a soft voice and strangely, I already knew that I was safe and that they would protect me. Was the moon goddess helping me? Tears sprung but I forced it down as well as the heat that was still focused on the huge man still standing a safe space away. I knew he could smell my arousal and that only made me burn hotter.
I swallow and shift my focus back on the strange woman kneeling before me. my eyes widened when I realized how close she had come to me and for a while I worried about her white being stained by the dirty floor. she reaches out for my twisted ankle and frowns. I look down to my ankle and realize what made her frown. The ankle had swollen a lot and looked like a huge potato on my small legs.
“This must hurt a lot.” She says again and I can hear the sympathy in her voice. She holds the ankle softly and whispers words I don’t understand. A strange warmth spread around my ankle, just like when Racheal had healed me. My eyes widened as I watch the swelling reduce and disappear like it had never been there before.
Who were these people? A healer and a powerful wolf. I catch sight of the wolf from earlier that was supposed to bite into my throat and end my life. It was lying unconscious at the base of a tree. It had taken a hard hit from the looks of the c***k marks on the tree.
The warmth on my ankle moves up my body and my gaze shift back to the healer in front of me. she was whispering words again. The warmth this time, suppressed the mating heat and I let out a relieved breath. But then, I began to feel myself drifting off…until I reached a peaceful slumber.
“Take her, I’ll distract the others and join you soon.” I heard the healer say and feel myself being lifted up into strong arms.
Then, right before I lose consciousness, I hear a deep masculine voice say softly: “I will protect you.”

CAYENNE’S POV:
We’d been waiting for nearly an hour now and no one had passed by. I wanted to ask if we were truly waiting for someone. But I couldn’t doubt Morwenna’s prophecies. They always came a lot sooner than expected.
About twenty minutes ago, a howl had broken through the night followed by the series of drum beats. I knew what those beats represented. Something had happened to the Alpha of the Moonlight pack. Every wolf had to be on guard and catch the perpetrator. But who in their right mind would attack the alpha in his land, surrounded by his pack? There was no way you would safely escape. It was common knowledge that it’s a suicidal attempt.
“Some things just have to be put in place and arranged by fate.” Was all Morwenna said when I gave her the confused look. “How else would we believe in destiny?”
That was when I realized that whoever we were waiting for, was involved in whatever was that going on and our fate had to be intertwined.
I whistle softly and one of my guards appear beside me. As an alpha, I couldn’t go anywhere outside my pack without some werewolves to guard me. Even though I didn’t need them, I brought them just in case. Plus, they were good at masking their presence and their wolf scent. They make good spies and would help me figure out what was going on.
He kneels down and bares his neck to me, a sign of submission and says with respect: “Alpha”
“You can stand, Jeremy. What is going on?” I ask and watch as he rises to his feet.
“The alpha was attacked. He was stabbed in the chest with a silver knife but they can’t find who did it.” He says with his head bowed. No one could talk to an alpha eye to eye except they were courting death. Anyone that did so would be indirectly challenging the alpha. Because of my genes, I was way stronger than any wolf so, challenging me would be the same as embracing death.
The only exceptions were my family, beta and of course Morwenna.
“Is it any of the other Alphas?” I ask thinking that one of them would want to start a war with Alpha Ace. From the reports I’d gathered so far, Ace wasn’t a good Alpha and had gotten his title in a brutal way. It was possible for him to have a lot of enemies. What’s more brutal is how he treats his pack. He wasn’t a good alpha at all. But that didn’t concern me. As long as he didn’t offend me or my pack, he was safe from me.
“It’s someone from his pack.”
My eyes widen a bit at his reply. It wasn’t that surprising. With the way he treated his pack, of course they’d be enemies within too.
“she’s coming.” Morwenna says softly and Jeremy retreats back into the shadows. That’s when I hear the tiny but urgent footsteps as well as the larger heavy ones belonging to werewolves. They were chasing after someone and that person was a female. Then the wave hits me and I nearly fall to my knees. She was in heat and she was unmated.
Why would an unmated wolf be involved with the alpha incident? Something wasn’t right. I couldn’t sense any wolf from the female, just her heat. And she wasn’t completely human too.
I watch from where we stood, hidden behind the trees as a little person runs into the clearing. At first glance, she was so small, but then again everyone was smaller compared to me. What struck me first was her hair, an odd color for a wolf. Then the smell of her heat hit me again, this time stronger and my body starts to react.
This wasn’t normal. It shouldn’t affect me. Heat from unmated wolves never did. Wolves who survive the loss of a mate are never mated again. They aren’t attracted to any other wolf and leave a lonely life. So why was she different?
Unless…
She trips and falls, her face twisted in pain. I could see that she’d hurt her ankle and something about her pained expression made my wolf, Dex restless. The soft whimper she let out as she examined her ankle, had me clenching my palms and gritting my teeth.
My eyes narrow when I sense a wolf approach in the bushes not too far from where she sat on the ground. Rage tore through me when I see the fear on her face as she senses the wolf approach her.
A part of me wants to hold her and reassure her till her fears are gone. Another part of me wants to rip the wolf to pieces for scaring her. I look to Morwenna, hoping she won’t stop me from what I’m about to do. I calm down a bit when I see her nod. Good.
As I turn back to the girl, I see that she’s closed her eyes although tears poured from underneath her eyelids. She knew the wolf would kill her and had accepted her fate. She looked helpless and lonely.
Maybe it was because I’d once looked like that, or because I understood how it felt to be lonely, or maybe it was because her heat was making my wolf too restless but, the next thing I know, Dex is taking over my body and slamming the wolf unconscious. He was angry. An unusual reaction from him. And he’s not satisfied with just knocking the wolf unconscious. He wants to kill it for scaring her.
I quickly take back control over my body and signal my men. They take the unconscious wolf away and I turn to the girl. Morwenna is already tending to her wounds and I stay a safe distance away, not wanting to scare her with my size. Also, to calm Dex down. I keep my eyes on her as I talk to him.
“What’s going on Dex?” I ask him but he only grunts and urges me to go to her. My feet move towards the girl on their own accord as the smell of her arousal grew more and more. Just as I was about to ask Morwenna to do something about her heat, it seizes and I breathe out a relieved sigh. She already suppressed it.
“Take her, I’ll distract the others and join you soon.” Morwenna says moving away and staring into the distance. More wolves were coming. I needed to keep her safe. Don’t ask me why.
I crunch down and lift her into my arms. I frown when I feel how light she is. Wasn’t she feeding well? A bitter feeling rose as I could only imagine what she had been going through in this Moonlight pack.
She snuggled closer as I held her. A warm sweet feeling rose and as she fit in my arms as though she was meant to be there.
Dex was also fighting to take control of my body wanting to be closer to her. I let him for the moment. And when he filled my being, I heard him vow to her: “I will protect you.”
I smiled and took back control. I signal my men and they move with me. Morwenna was capable of protecting herself. I give her a nod and then leave with the girl in my arms.
