“Right there, you’re opening a can of worms. If you give Jon something that turns out to be worth more than what you gave David, David will start accusing you of favoritism. Do you have a favorite uncle? And what about your mother?”
I just stared at him, not knowing what to do.
“Unfortunately, my children are all greedy SOBs and worry that someone else is getting more than they are. They take after their mother, I fear, God rest her soul.”
I never expected him to say anything derogatory about his late wife, my grandmother. I’d always thought that was the perfect marriage.
“You didn’t hear that,” he said. “Your grandmother, bless her soul, was like that. She always worried that this or that neighbor had something better than we did.”
