CHANGE OF PLAN?
ADELINE
"I hope you've received the package." I receive a text from Jaxon as I lie on bed watching something on Netflix.
In confusion, I decide to call him despite it being against our work ethics. I'm not supposed to call him... he's the one to always make the calls!
"A package?" I ask curiously immediately he picks up. I've already sat up from my cosy bed. "I haven't-" before I can finish my sentence, my doorbell rings and I spring onto my feet, rushing to the door.
"Hello... Hello... Are you there?" I can hear Jaxon asking through the phone which I've thrown carelessly on the bed.
"Good afternoon ma'am." A guy who's standing at the door greets me immediately I pull the door open. He's a delivery guy from an expensive and exclusive boutique in the city.
"Good afternoon." I reply, my eyes fixed on the package he's holding. I guess it's the one Jaxon was asking about.
"Here's a package for you." He says as he hands it over to me. "But first, you need to sign here to confirm that you've received your package." He adds, handing me a book and pen. Without wasting time, I sign it, bid him goodbye and close the door behind him, my package in hand as I head back to my bedroom.
Jaxon is no longer speaking from the other side, a clear indication that he has ended the call. Temporarily forgetting about him, I tear the cover off the package in an unladylike manner, throwing the wrapping papers carelessly on the floor.
I'm baffled to see a blood red lingerie and a very short dress which I've already thrown onto the bed. Confused and surprised at the same time, I pick the lingerie and scrutinize it at close range. It's so beautiful with flowery laces. The tiny dress is equally beautiful, with gold straps and it's open at the back. The chest part is also low, making me feature myself in it and I just laugh at how much cleavage I'll be showing upon putting it on.
The temptations to fit into my new set of 'clothes' are overwhelming but I decide against it. I don't know what conditions have come with the attire therefore I'm not ready to risk.
This is new coming from Jaxon, given the fact that ever since we met, our interactions have been official and whenever he wants me to look the part, he buys me all that I want as long as I don't fail him during his trips and meetings here and there.
Oh yes!
My name is Adeline and I wasn't born with a silver spoon in my hands. I am the first born in a family of five, consisting of a present father, a present mother and two younger brothers who are both in college.
Growing up, my parents ensured that my siblings and I lacked nothing, even though they didn't have much to offer. My dad juggled between three jobs which barely sustained us, though mom's business came in handy. She used to sell food in a fast food joint. She still does to date, though dad has already retired from his jobs and has since joined mom in her business.
Upon graduating from college, I started doing menial jobs here and there so as to help my parents with the bills but that wasn't enough. My brothers were still in high school and the demands were more since by then dad had dropped two jobs and was concentrating on only one due to his health.
"Adeline, are you there?" Jaxon's call interrupts my thoughts, bringing me back to reality. Oh yeah.... We have lingerie here and a tiny dress. I'm sure it won't be long enough to cover my ass area!
"Y-yeah." I reply, wondering what he has to say next.
"Have you seen the package?" He asks yet again and I nod, forgetting that I'm on a call and he won't be able to see me.
"Yeah, its contents as well." I reply.
"Hope you love them." He says, chuckling slightly from the other side. I hesitate without answering, wondering what he was thinking while sending that stuff to me. We're not that close, just official contact, that's all! "Well, I'm traveling this Friday to Paris and as usual, I'd like you to accompany me." He states upon sensing my silence.
"But sir, I've never accompanied you to Paris before. Remember that's where your fiance is based." I say to him, wondering what has come over him.
"You mean Bella my ex-fiance?"
"What?" I ask, shocked. I have no idea they've broken up.
"Yes, and I want you to start packing your clothes and don't forget that lingerie and dress because you'll be needing them."
"I don't understand-"
"Friday, the international airport 2 p.m, your tickets are ready!" He cuts me short and since I know how stubborn he is, I reply with a simple 'yes' then he hangs up.
I slump onto the bed, throwing my phone beside me. I sigh heavily. I can't help but wonder what his intentions are and when he broke up with Bella.
You see, after doing several menial jobs, I decided to start applying for jobs in companies and private organizations as a Personal Assistant since that's what I learned in college.
It was in one of my unsuccessful interviews when I met Jaxon. He and a few other sharp dressed men had just come out of the boardroom of the company where I had been called for an interview.
I had just been turned down and told point blank that I didn't have the qualifications for the job since I hadn't worked in any other organization as a PA before. They wanted someone with at least two years of experience in the field. Well, that's what every company I attended an interview demanded for!
I was seated at the waiting lobby, my face in my hands, thinking about my life and how I'm going to survive with those menial jobs which barely bought me my skin routine when one of the sharply dressed business men spotted me and walked to me.
"Hey miss, why are you this sad?" He asked me, making me look up.
"I-i" I mumbled, words barely coming out of my mouth.
"Let me guess." He said while playing with his beard. "You didn't pass the interview."
"I didn't!" I retorted angrily. "What's your business anyway? You're all the same!" I concluded as I stood up to leave.
"I'd like to prove you wrong!" He said right behind me as I briskly walked out of the establishment.
"Go to hell!" I said amid clenched teeth.
"I heard that, you know?"
"It was intended for your ears!" I said out loud... "dumbass!" I cussed under my breath, inaudibly.
"Here's my card, contact me when you're less emotional and let's talk about your employment." He said, making me stop on my tracks.
I turned to face him and I saw him handing a business card to me. I took it from his hand without thinking twice, hoping he'd save me from this job searching menace.
"I am Jaxon and I own several businesses including Wyatt holdings."
"What?" I asked in surprise as I scrutinized the card closely. "You are Jaxon Wyatt? The Famous and youngest Billionaire in this city?" I asked in confusion.
"Call me whenever you're ready, miss!" He said to me as he walked away towards the restaurant which his associates had entered. He didn't even care about replying to my question. It seemed he wasn't ready to feed my curiosity!
Still clutching the Business card as if my life depended on it, I turned to leave, heading towards the taxi stands. I had already resolved to call him immediately I got home that afternoon.
****
Jaxon Wyatt...
I knew the billionaire quite well. His fame was all over the media. Self proclaimed and quite arrogant. Would he be of help to me? Scrap that! Why would he give me his business card if he wasn't willing to help, anyway?
That same evening, I made a call to him, and he picked up immediately. I marveled at his timing.
Wait a moment!
Why would he take his office telephone home, or was he still in the office? Well, I was about to find out!
"You gave me your business card earlier-"
"Adeline, right?" He cut me short then asked from the other side.
"Yes." I said then nodded, as if he could see me. "Are you still in the office?" I asked him, casually.
"Yeah." He replied, heaving a sigh from the other side. "My Personal assistant just put to bed and I'm yet to acquire another one." He said, and my heart beat faster. I was about to get employed!
"Oh, sorry to hear that." I said sincerely and he just chuckled from the other side. "Let me guess... you have a huge workload on your desk that's why you didn't go home early?" I said, my voice laced with concern.
"You're somehow right... But nah! I was also waiting for your call since I didn't give you my personal number but my office line. You see, I saw how disturbed you were at my friend's office that's why I decided to help you out. My office address is on the business card I gave you, so kindly avail yourself here tomorrow morning for more details concerning your employment and work details."
"The job is mine?" I asked curiously. "Even without a proper interview?" I was surprised and I asked without giving him time to reply.
"I have everything I need to know about you, Adeline. Let's meet tomorrow morning as agreed. Good night!" He said then hang up immediately.
I placed my phone on my bed and heaved a sigh. I couldn't believe how lucky I was after searching for a job for months without success.
I was still living with my parents and sibling, though I had my own room for my privacy.
Before sleeping, I made a silent prayer, thanking God for remembering me and then laid my head down on the bed to sleep. I had a job to report to the following day!
