An Omen
I knelt before the altar of the Ancient Ones. The temple stood around me in reverant silence, its crystal pillars catching the light of the twin suns and reflecting it across the marble floor. Wisps of incense wafted through the chamber, drifting toward the high ceiling where ancient runes glowed with magic. Ceremonial white fabric gathered at my feet. The robe was simple by royal standards, unadorned silk meant to symbolize humility before the gods. My hood set a light shadow across my face as tradition required. In the presence of the Ancient Ones, crowns meant nothing. Here, I came only as a mate. Footsteps shuffled beside me. Katya and Aurora stood at my sides, wrapped in tiny ivory garments embroidered with silver thread. Katya held a bundle of moon-blossoms almost too large for her small hands, while Aurora clutched a delicate vial of honeyed nectar we'd gathered in the gardens earlier. I smiled faintly and guided their hands toward the golden offering basin. “Gently,” I whispered. “We must thank the Ancient Ones first.” “Fank you, Ancient Ones,” they murmured solemnly in synchronization. Three years ago, beneath sacred witness and before the entire realm, Lukah had claimed me as his fated mate. He was the King of the Elderwood Court. Ruler of the most powerful fae kingdom across all the realms. And he was my husband. Tonight, we will stand before our court once again for the Renewal Rite. It was more than an anniversary. It was the law. Every year, the ruling king and queen reaffirmed their vows before the realm and the Ancient Ones. Magic was renewed. Loyalty was sealed. And afterward, the royal couple withdrew in private to complete the final expectation of the rite. To produce a heir. A male heir to be exact. No one spoke those words aloud anymore, but the pressure lingered in every council chamber, with every court whisper. Our two daughters, though beloved, had not silenced that expectation. I lowered my offering into the basin, figs glazed with honey, crushed stardust petals, and a strand of my hair. Silver light rippled through the bowl as the offering dissolved. “Thank you,” I murmured, bowing my head in respect. “For my King. My mate. For my daughters. For our kingdom. For the strength of our union.” The lantern flames flickered, and warmth pulsed faintly through the stone beneath my knees. A blessing. Or so I believed. Katya dropped her moon-blossoms into the basin, and Aurora poured in the nectar, and they both gasped as they watched their offerings dissolve into a swirl of glowing light. Aurora clapped with delighted laughter that echoed against the temple walls. I gathered them both close, pressing kisses into their soft hair. “Tonight we celebrate where it all began,” I whispered. For I did not know it would also be where everything ended. The sacred pool lay just beyond the temple courtyard, hidden within a ring of ancient stone arches veined with gold. Silver vines curled along the pillars, their pale blossoms glowing faintly in the afternoon light. Beneath them, the water shimmered under the moonlight. Royal tradition required purification before the Renewal Rite. I guided the twins to a nearby stone bench where attendants waited discreetly beyond the courtyard gates. The ritual waters were not meant for younglings, but it had been important to bring them to the temple today. They were part of the blessing. Part of the future that the realm expected from us. “Stay with Guardian Lara,” I told them softly, brushing a kiss across each small forehead. Katya nodded solemnly. Aurora waved a sticky hand, still clutching the empty vial from the offering. I smiled as I turned back toward the pool. The courtyard was quiet now. Only the distant whisper of wind through silver leaves disturbed the stillness. I slipped the ceremonial robe from my shoulders and folded it carefully beside the steps. The white undergown remained; it was simple and weightless against my skin. The first step into the water sent warmth around my ankles. Enchanted springs bubbled from far below the temple, their magic and soothing energy rising through the stone and into the pool. The water seemed to welcome me. I took another step. Then I slipped. The stone beneath my foot gave way without warning. The world lurched sideways. My temple struck the edge of the basin with a sharp c***k that echoed through the courtyard. For a moment, everything went silent. Then warmth slid down the side of my face. I lifted trembling fingers and stared at them. It was crimson in color, I watched as the blood streamed into the sacred water, unraveling like a dark ribbon. It soaked into the hem of my white gown. White stained red. The sight held me frozen for a breath. Was this an omen? The thought flickered through my mind. Then I exhaled slowly and pressed my hand against the wound. The bleeding slowed almost immediately, fae healing magic knitting the skin closed beneath my touch. Within moments, the cut was gone. There would be no scar, no wound, but the stain would remain. The white silk clung to my legs, thick with water and streaked with red. Unease prickled along my spine. It’s just your nerves, Kristina. Amara? I called my wolf, but there was no answer. She hadn’t been speaking to me for a while now. Tonight was important. Tonight, the realm would watch Lukah and me renew the vows that bound us together. I stepped from the pool and gathered a robe. I did notice how, for just a moment longer, the silver surface shimmered a little darker where my blood had fallen. When I reached the garden path, I found my girls sitting in the grass with the Guardian Lara, their small fingers busy weaving daisy chains. Soft giggles drifted through the air as they carefully threaded the fragile stems together, proudly holding up their crooked little crowns. “Mama, look!” one of them called, beaming as she lifted her chain for me to see. I smiled. They both looked so precious. “Thank you for keeping them company, Lara,” I said. “I hope they weren’t too much trouble.” She chuckled softly. “Not at all, Your Grace. They’ve been very busy.” “Mama, look what we made!” Katya said, hurrying over and lifting a slightly crooked daisy chain toward me. I crouched down, letting her place it carefully in my hair. “It’s beautiful,” I told her, brushing a stray curl from her face. Aurora held up her own creation proudly. “This one’s for you too, Mama.” “Then I must be the luckiest mother in the kingdom,” I laughed with contentment. With that, I gathered my girls and their armfuls of daisies, and together we made our way back toward the palace, the path winding quietly through the gardens behind us. The Renewal Rite filled the palace with preparation. Servants hurried through the corridors with trays, musicians rehearsed in distant halls, and courtiers arrived beneath the golden glow of the stained-glass windows. My robe clung heavily to my legs as I walked. At least the robe covered the state that my gown was in I tried not to dwell on it, telling myself it was only nerves from the fall and the importance of what tonight would bring, though my steps slowed as I approached our private wing. I heard a quiet, breathless sound… followed by the murmur of voices too close together. The door to our chambers opened abruptly, and my sister Lilithien stepped into the hallway. She paused when she saw me, a slow, knowing smirk curling across her lips. My steps faltered. What was she doing coming out of mine and Lukah's chambers? A low growl rumbled through the back of my mind as Amara stirred, her anger resembling my own. My fingers tightened slightly around my daughters’ hands. My girls were with me. I couldn’t lose control. Not in front of them. Lilithien’s gaze flicked between us, amusement dancing in her eyes, as though she had already won a game I hadn’t known we were playing. The faint scent of my mate still clung to her skin. I said nothing. Instead, I held her gaze for a long moment and let my displeasure show before turning away. “Come along, my loves,” I whispered to my daughters. Hand in hand, we continued down the hallway toward their chambers, leaving Lilithien standing behind us.
