I eat my lunch quickly so that I can rest for a few minutes. My eyes were teary, and the tears that came out of my eyes were very heated when I yawned. And my body felt so cold on the outside that whenever the wind blew, it felt like it was rubbing against my flesh, and I could feel the intense heat inside of my body.
This isn't the first time I've been sick at work, but it's the first time my vision has been fuzzy and has occasionally turned dark all of a sudden.
This is very hard when you feel sick then you're living alone. Even if you have someone, if they don't care or love you, it's still the same; it's as if you're alone. I don't have a family beside me. No one would take care of me. No would worry about me, and the bad thing about it when I have my yourself, alone. You would truly understand how horrible it would be to be alone and lonely in your life at this moment.
And right now, I'm much worried about the man I left at home. There's a chance that someone will catch him, and what if they punch him and accuse him of trespassing? My head shook. I shook my head. He should not leave that small house. I think he wouldn't do that. I think he wouldn't dare to go out.
My eyes darted to the custumer who just came.
"I want to buy five kilos of rice." The older woman costumer said.
In the sari-sari store, I work as a cashier. After this, I have other work in the restaurant, and every night before they closed their restaurant, I would go to the restaurant and wash all the dishes.
"Are you all right?" Ma'am Fely asked after I had had a snooze. She is the owner of the store where I was employed. She looked at me worried.
She said again, "You seem so pale; are you really okay?" Her anxious tone was audible. I tried to smile while nodding. Today would be a waste if I did not work. When she placed her palms on my forehead, her eyes widened.
"You have a high fever!" She exclaimed terrified.
"That's nothing, Ma'am," I said politely. "It wouldn't last long. Maybe my body is just tired."
There's a new custumer custumer. I excused myself to Ma'am Felt while going to the little door of the store.
"Two beers." The custumer said.
"It's for three hundred, Sir." I said. I returned to the refrigerator to get the beer. Ma'am Cynthia was still worriedly standing there.
"Did you eat your lunch?" She asked.
"Done, Ma'am," I responded as I returned to the customer.
"Here's your beer, Sir," I said, "and here's your two hundred peso in change."
I flinched when Ma'am Cynthia is already beside me.
"What about the medicine?" She asked.
I shook my head.
"You should drink your medicine; if you're concerned about the money, you can get a medicine in the store; I don't mind; I'm more concerned about my hardworking employee than the money," Ma'am Cynthia stated as she went to the drawer to hunt for the specific drug.
I smiled while watching her doing that to me.
It must be wonderful to have a mother who was so concerned, loving and caring like that.
I could feel her concern and caring more than I could with my own family. Tito Dito and Tita Mildred, on the other hand, are more concerned with money. Inside of me feel so unfair because why... why I have to lose my mother so early.
"Drink this," she instructed. She even stayed to watch me take the med. I smiled after showed her my tongue.
"Thank you, Ma'am." I said softly.
"You should get some rest, and I'll close the shop," she said. I sigh and shake my head.
"Ma'am, I can still work."
If I didn't work, the day would be wasted. While looking at me, she shakes her head.I know she's worried but I'm already here, and this isn't the first time I've been sick, I was able to work through it.
"No, Ashanti," Ma'am Cynthia firmly stated. When I looked down, I could see how pale my body was since she was holding my hand. "Please have rest come back tomorrow, okay? You still have your income; I'm not going to deduct it. I'm going to close this store so that we, two, may rest."
"Thank you very much, Ma'am," I murmured quietly. I smiled at him with a smile, and she smiled back with her warmest smile.
When I'm outdoors waiting for the tricycle, I feel dizzy. I'm going to my place. I chose not to return to the restaurant since I think I would pass out before I could get there. I know my body, and if I feel I can simply endure, I will work hard but right now I can't. Maybe the med would take effect maybe hours from now. I also bought fried chickens and bread for my dogs.
I'm also residing on Crimson Island. We are surrounded by water, which is why we couldn't just walk around the city because we needed to go by boat. However, our boats, even the smallest ones, are all private and were only used for fishing. Mr. Lycan is the wealthiest guy in the town, and he also owns all of the boats on the island, as you can see. He was a businessman, and the locals, particularly the fisherman, worked for him.
My gaze was drawn to the nearby poste, where I used to hide from the scorching sun while waiting for the tricycle.
"We are looking for an unknown city person; if you see him, please contact and call this number; we will give a reward for worth fifty thousand if you can bring him to us. "
Even I was already on my way to our house, my thoughts wandered. Someone is looking for him, and going out would be extremely risky; I know he wouldn't be able to breathe in that small dwelling with dogs but it's better than that. We couldn't just trust anyone especially here in the island.
They didn't include an image or description of the unknown man as long as he was from the city.
And Tito Dito shouldn't have caught the man because I'm sure he'd trade him for cash. I'm not sure who that man is, but I have a hunch it's the man I helped, and we should be more cautious.
I got off the tricycle swiftly. My eyes flew to the left as I opened the gate.
"Ashanti!"
My eyes darted to Dianne before I could go to the small house.
Diane said, "Come here! What's the meal you're bringing!" Cynthia and Abegail joined her.
"What are you doing there, Ashanti! We're starving!" Abegail exclaimed. I sighed and averted my sight.
These food are for my dogs and to that man.
"What took you so long to come here."
Dianne drew the plastic to my palm.
"Ew, is this just plain bread?" she asked. I gratefully caught it before it fell after she tossed it on my chest. She stole the plastic to Abegail, who was still holding it. When they saw four chickens, her eyes...their eyes twinkled.
"I will take this chicken." Dianne said. She smirk to her sisters and say, "Let's go girls-
"Dianne, may I have that one chicken? "They looked at me and laughed as I pleaded.
"I'll do your project. " I whispered that made them stop laughing.
"That's why you're so brilliant and genius," Dianne exclaimed as she snatched the last piece of chicken from my palms.
"You should do it more frequently, honey," she said quietly as she placed the chicken in my hands, and I gave her a short glance when she get back the chicken.I tried to pull it but she kick my hands, and smirk.
"I'm already hungry. I'll take one bite," she says, opening her lips wide and devouring nearly half the thigh of the chicken. She grins.
"She mumbled, "Let's go girls," and they turned around. I could also hear them giggling at my reaction.
I stepped inside and went straight to the kitchen when I noticed them sitting at the table. I'm simply relieved they didn't take the bread. I purposefully purchased plain bread because I knew, they won't eat bread unless it's cinnamon rolls,
"Hep! Where are you going Ashanti?" Dianne asked. and I stared at them, bored. I don't think I need medicine; just seeing their faces makes my fever disappear.
"Do you want to feed the dogs?" I stated flatly.
"Ew." They said together.
"mooch begar." I said back.
I smiled when I heard the dogs sniffing, and I smiled even more when they were already in front of the door, excited to see me. I'm just glad we could all fit in here, but we had to stoop or droop. And I saw the man, who was bored. He's too big for this small house.
"Shhh..." I murmured quietly as I caressed their heads. I embrace them tightly. And when I'm sniffing their bodies. I cough a lot. The dogs give me a quick look.
"I'm fine. I'm fine," I assured them. "I have food for you. This is just your snacks," I remarked as I tossed the bread on the floor. My body has moved beside the man, who is likewise staring at me.
I slowly put the bowl infront of him.
"Eat this," I instructed. My face bruises aren't going to fade away that fast. I couldn't see clearly this man because of this black trapal that was covered to this small house. But based from his figure I could see that he came from a wealthy family, or he is rich or he's like a famous artist that has a lot of bashes who wants to salvage him or whatsoever.
I asked him softly, "What is your name?" And I could feel my mouth's heated breath. I'm starting to get cold all over again. Before I may sneeze in front of this man, I hastily cover my mouth and lean down.
"My name is Ashanti, and what is your name?" I asked. When I looked at him, he abruptly stopped chewing his food and peered at me.
"Gun," he said.
"Gun? Like machine gun? Gun with bullets?" I asked, and laugh. He averted his gaze and resumed his meal.
"Gun is a rare name. Forgive me for laughing." I said as I lean my head to the side opposite his. I closed my eyes and let the dogs kiss my cheeks as I was closing my eyes.
"Is it okay to call you Gun? I mean there are people that possessive to their names, they only let this special or a closest person to call you this name. I chuckled," I mean don't know how to call you." I said. He stopped eating, and look at me seriously.
I'm tired addressing him as" this guy or this man".
I smile while waiting an answer or his reaction but he just shrug his shoulder. I guess it is okay.
"I'm Ashanti, but my mother only calls me Shan." I uttered myself. Mentioning mom makes me sad, but I shake my head off.
"Are you okay with this place?" I asked again.
"It's fine. I could fit myself, here." He replied.
"I noticed a poste..." I murmured, my gaze falling on his. "There's a note there...saying they're looking for an unknown person...and it's best if you don't leave this spot just yet...and they've offered a large sum of money to anyone can find that city guy."
"Aren't you scared of me?" He asked. "You can sell me. I don't mind. Take the money." He said, that made my eyes widened.
"Why would I do that? I will never do that," I
stated emphatically, covering my lips as my tone
grew louder.
"I would not do that; what would happen to me if I did?" I asked. I don't want to do that. I was imagining myself if I was on his place.
"You have the money. You can leave this place." He said. I'm sure he already heard us and already know my situation.
" I can leave this place without causing someone's life at stake or in danger, and by the way... Why is someone looking for you? Are you a wanted person or something?" I asked, a little bit scared. "You were lifeless when I found you, and what happened to your stomach?" I asked, looking at his stomach. "Someone wanted to kill you," I said. I'm convinced a gunshot is still lodged in his stomach.
He went completely silent. He refuses to say anything. He placed the plate next to me. If he's bad, I'm confident he won't murder me. I was the one that helped him, and I don't believe he would go to such lengths to murder someone who helps him.
"I'd want to call you at this number," he stated solemnly. I fixed my gaze on him. "Remember this number. Call him and tell him you found me. If he asks what my name is, tell him I'm Oliver and I want a black coffee," he seriously said.
"Black coffee?" I innocently asked. " We have a lot of black coffe."
He chuckled, "Silly, that's a code." He place the bowl beside me.
"Go get some rest. You're not feeling well." He said, and I looked at him seriously while my lips parted.
